Thank you! Precisely the video I wanted to see, right now! I've also decided to trim my beard myself, so this has 1) taught me some good stuff, and 2) shown me I've been doing OK so far!

I’ve been making that mistake with my neck line. I guess I just need to let it grow out for a while.

I have an issue, I’ve left my facial hair to grow for close to a whole year now and it seems like my hair grows to about 2 inches and then completely stops. No more growth. I also have asymmetrical growth. My right side grows a lot thicker, as in more patches of skin that produce hair, and my left side, especially under my jaw, has small patches of almost completely bald skin.
I do trim and keep it around 1 to 1.5 inches, and I brush and wash and apply oil when it’s drying out, but my hair is always just out and like never forms a singular mass of beard, it’s just all hairs jutting out in all directions and never seem to be able to form a good shape. And when it does, I have to trim out the stray parts of hair.
Everyone says I look better with facial hair than without, but my mother keeps, quite frankly, bitching me about (but then again her idea of good looking is me looking like a 13 year old going to a wedding :|) it & saying I need to cut it more and trim it more.
But now I’m at the conundrum that if I trim it any more than it already is, it’ll start to show the bald spots on skin under my jaw and will start looking asymmetrical again. So if I trim it down any more than I already do I might as well just get rid of it all…
I have no trouble growing hair anywhere else. I’ve had hairy hairy legs since I was in middle school. I started growing chest hair at 15, like full set of chest. And my hair on my head can easily grow down to my shoulders within months. But my beard seems to just stop growing & again has that asymmetry & bald patches on my left side…
What do I do? Any help? Comments? Recommendations? Should I just say fuck it and let it grow and just keep it symmetrical? What do I do…

I’m guessing that you are still relatively young. I’ve grown about four deliberate beards and I’ve only been satisfied with the look now that I’ve turned 40. It’s true that beards do seem to get better with age. It’s also true that in the past I simply didn’t have the patience to wait and see what my natural beard could do on it’s own after any considerable length of time.
My advice would be to get a good look at your beard now take some selfies both straight on and side profile. Make an accurate assessment of your beard. Accurately and objectively try to assess your beard’s strengths and weaknesses. Don’t be harsh or critical just accurate. Is the chin area thick or thin? What about the mustache? The sideburns? Write these down.
Second step: sketch an accurate self portrait as best as you can that as accurately as possible given your drawing skills represents your current head face and beard as it currently is. Do the same self assessment as before.
Third step: sketch what you would see as a reasonable “goal” beard style that accentuates your beard’s strengths and minimizes it’s weakness. Focus on making a reasonable goal shape/style rather than length. Let whatever length come after you have settled on a workable style and shape that best suits your beard and face.
Learn what that style/shape of beard is called. Is it a “business beard”? “Circle beard”. “Van Dyke” “whaler”, etc etc.
Once you have determined what description best fits your goal style find some images from google that represent a reasonably attainable example for you. Search for RUclips videos of people with that beard style and how they maintain it.
Final step go for it. If you were accurate and reasonable at every step then the final step shouldn’t be very drastic or overwhelming. Mostly it’s about identifying a style that best suits your face and beard.
This sounds like a lot but going through all the steps together shouldn’t take too much time especially the sketching and example gathering. By the way when looking for examples make sure to focus on those that share your face and body type.
It sounds like you’re well on your way already.
Mom’s always hate their son’s first beards - they never want their babies to grow up.
