Fun fact: despite some research fails, this comic is wildly popular over here in Russia and Ukraine and it's mainly because of Batman's hat. It's like, yeah! Finally an American writer gets it! Ushankas aren't just for aesthetic, we actually need them! Also I love how both the changes they made to Batman's and Superman's personalities actually make sense, it's not just random bullshit.
Just to clarify Lex's obsession with Superman starts when a cloned version of Superman beats him in chess. Obviously Lex' ego can not fathom someone else being smarter than him. edit- Also, the point of sending Superman back was to prevent the future destruction of the planet. He failed, because Lex took over, but it also meant that Lex's machinations and plans were also a failure, because his society evolved into a "cold complacent lot" who refused to listen to Jor-El's warning.
Oh yeah I'd forgot about that it was the bizzaro clone that was like a tardy (descriptive not pejorative) supes, yeah that's gotta take you down a couple of notches
Wow, so in this universe they don't try to save their son but instead save the planet. But since the planet is always destined to blow up, they always fail. That's harsh.
But shouldn't he be more obsessed with the clone? The original never beat him, so he's technically still smarter than Superman, just not the clone. Just saying.
I died laughing at the Grant Morrison impression! I know you're fond of channelling Alan Moore from time to time, but it would seriously be great to see a little more Sal Morrison. Please do a back issues episode on Grant Morrison's JLA! Or at the very least, one of the arcs.
I would love a british superman story where, as being raised in england he decides to not really use his powers and just drink tea and get a mortgage. XD
@@comicpop Honestly I don't think true brut really hits the mark. Like its a fun what if but as a brit myself it feels a little "american writing about Britain based on steriotypes" but also "person writing a comic who has never read or particularly care about comics". Like we face the same problems of nationalism, corrupt governments, classism and class divide, racism, transphobia and lgbt issues ect. The difference is the cultural attitude. In america there's this whole American dream, you can go to the city and make it. We don't have this. Our cultural attitude us that it won't happen to you and that you won't be heard.
Ethan and I had the same reaction at the same time when Sal said that basically a baby was sent to the past to create the future/present lol. So it's kind of like the Reverse Flash thing where he is the catalyst for his creation and the same with Superman and his reign. I dig it lol.
" 30 species of bat live in russia" there is nothing that you could said or done that could be more funny than that little message XDXDXDXDXDXDXDXDXD just to destroy ben argument

This has completely changed my concept of Superman. Although Red Son is an alternate universe and will likely never be seen again, DAMN! It just felt like Empire Strikes Back. Everything goes to shit. Good people die. Very awesome story.
I thought the ending of the comic was actually brilliant. But, as you guys said... it would've made more sense and had a better impact if it was Kansas where he landed. Other than that, the ending was pure awesome!
As someone from Chile, I have to say that it's probably because of the big influence of the US on Chilean political matters, it's kinda sweet that the comic acknoledged it... sad for my country anyway xD
I'm from Chile too. I think it the other way around. We were the first country to democratically elect a communist president. If Red Son is about turning things around, Chile might've ended up siding with US because, even it was for 2 years, we were a huge menace to the States and the only country that by popular vote decided to say no to capitalism...which eventually led to the US doing everything in their power to gain control of the country, succeeding and having a big influence for a looong as time.
I think the idea of the loop is neat. Like, the comic ends in the beginning, and rereading it feels like a natural continuation. Like a God observing a deterministic universe roll on and on.
Superman Red Son was the first Superman comic I've read, and one of the first Marvel comics I picked up since I started this obsession a year or so ago. Loved the recap, time to re-read it! Thanks!
