The first time listening to this song and then hearing the part of the song 11:35 to 11:55 and just being so blown away by what I had heard. I must of picked the needle up off the record and moved it back like 10 time in a row just to rehear that part of the song. I was real lucky I did not scratch my record. Iron Maiden, though labelled as a pioneer of heavy metal, I have felt is almost proto progressive metal. Concept albums, long literature based/story/sci fi songs, technically proficient. They're truly an amazing band. Even their later stuff post 2000. Brave New World, Matter of Life and Death, Book of Souls, all amazing. Changed vocalists couple times but Bruce is so iconic. Check out song Paschendale if you haven't already. Rock on guys!

I saw them do this song live a few times. On one of those occasions I got down really close to the stage and there was this long bar across the top of the front of the stage that was three parallel bands of pale red, blue, and green, and right in the middle, there was a circle kind of like a target in the same colors, and it looked ship-like, and had light fixtures attached to it. In that slower middle section where all that bass is, there was one part where the bass player was dragging a pick on his strings and it gave the impression of a creaking ship, and while that was happening the bar I mentioned was slowly swaying and I suddenly realized I was on that swaying, creaking ship, on a dead, still water and it occurred to me that I had just experienced one of those moments that creeps up on you and you don't recognize it until it's upon you. Amazing song and amazing live performance.

This record came out in 1984. I saw them for the first time on this tour - then saw 'em several more times in the 80's. I saw them again, for the first time since '88 just a few weeks ago - they've always been known for their live shows and they were incredible in the 80's. Now, all of them in the 60's {Bruce is the youngest at 61, Nicko [the drummer] is 67!]) they're better live now than they were then - and that's saying a LOT! They're playing nothing but their classic material on the current tour, if you have the opportunity you gotta go! Sound, lights, stage production, performance, EVERYTHING is 100% amazing this time around!

Hey guys. Thank you so SO much for choosing this song to react to. I've been anticipating this since you requested more Iron Maiden tracks.
Might I suggest you check out the live Flight 666 version also. Not necessarily to react to, but just to watch and to enjoy, and to see the masters at work. It's a cracking version.
Great reaction from you both as always. It's awesome that you both rate it so highly on your first hearing. Trust me it gets better still the more you hear it.
I regularly use it as a running song and it helps me run further and quicker.
Thanks again guys. Keep up the good work, and you could do worse than choose Hallowed be Thy Name next. It definitely won't disappoint either.

You two might enjoy reading "Erebus" by Michael Palin... the ancient mariner gets mentioned. It´s about the famous "Erebus" and her journeys to the ends of the world both south and north (for some background totally unrelated to music, lol). Up the irons!

BTW, really appreciate how you guys react by actually listening to the music and not pausing all the time with OTT reactions. 👍👍

The lyrics were at times really close to the original poem, but only two of the strophes were directly taken from the original poem (and Andy was right, one of them is when the song slows down) :
Day after day, day after day
We stuck nor breath nor motion
As idle as a painted ship upon a painted ocean
    Water, water everywhere and
    All the boards did shrink
Water, water everywhere nor any drop to drink.
One after one by the star dogged moon
Too quick for groan or sigh
Each turned his face with a ghastly pang
And cursed me with his eye
    Four times fifty living men
(And I heard nor sigh nor groan)
With heavy thump, a lifeless lump
They dropped down one by one.

Also check out some more live stuff: "Hallowed be thy Name" at Hammersmith 1982 and see how long he can hold a note.

Seen them many times, first time in London in '81 and they never fail to blow me away.

Such a great Band. Phantom of the Opera should be on the list too, either the original which had Paul Di Anno on vocals or a Bruce Dickinson live version. Di Anno left about 1981, Bruce joined then with his first Album being Number of the Beast. He is also a Pilot, Author, Broadcaster and he was also once picked for the British Olympic Fencing team but couldn't compete because of Touring commitments. Loving the Video's!!!

Been a fan since maidens start, and this is one of my favorite songs period. I mean listen to Steve Harris and that tone, he’s the reason I’ve been playing bass forever. No other band even compares to maiden, hands down the best.

Interesting bit of trivia - the lyrics to this song say the ship was sailing north.
But in the original poem by Samuel Taylor Coleridge the ship was sailing south towards Antarctica.

Guys, The Rime of the Ancient Mariner is a poem written by Samuel Taylor Coleridge around 1834. Now that's what you might call bringing old poetry up to date!
I wonder how many of the English classics current musicians have read.

So here's the story : The poem starts off in a wedding, as an old and unnerving mariner grabs onto a wedding-guest and starts to forcibly tell his story. He is the last surviving member of his crew and the only one who can tell the story of how they all died at sea. As the mariner recalls, the ship had been sailing in mist for many day when he made the mistake of shooting the albatross that was following them, believing it was a bad omen. The wind dropped as soon as the albatross was killed and the crew blamed him for it. Days passed and the wind never came back and the water supply came to diminish. Angered, the crewmen hung the dead albatross to the mariner's neck, in place of his cross. But the wind never came back.
After what seemed like weeks, as they are all dying of thirst, they see a ship approaching in the horizon. They all cheer, thinking they are saved, but no one stops to wonder how the ship can sail without wind or a tide. And when the ship was close enough, it was not a ship but the skeleton of a ship that appeared before their eyes. On it were two spectres playing dice to decide of the mariner's fate. Life-in-Death won over Death, and so the mariner was condemned to survive his comrades and remain eternally in a in-between state, suffering from the thirst and the guilt, but unable to die. This went on for seven days and seven nights until the curse was lifted, after the mariner was moved by the beauty of a sea creature and started to pray again. The story goes on, but that's pretty much the gist of it.
