  • Part 2 of the series, Permaculture instructor Andrew Millison visits the legendary Seven Seeds Farm and its founder, Don Tipping, discussing Don's seed breeding efforts, philosophy, and his successful business Siskiyou Seeds. This is a shining example of a permaculture farm that has really cracked the code by being at the same time financially successful, ecologically abundant, hydrologically beneficial, biodiverse, and a unique expression of the creativity and ingenuity of it's founder. Don is a true seed whisperer doing powerful work.

We need a company like this in every bioregion that can both produce seed AND demonstrate how to get the plants to thrive in local conditions. I started purchasing seed from another local company whose plants also have to deal with the challenges of a true maritime climate and my gardening success skyrocketed. I can buy those exact same varieties from a larger company with a decent reputation and not do quite as well. A few generations of growing in a place and selecting seed from the most vital plants really seems to make a difference even if the variety doesn't officially change.

Well, if only there were already plants naturally adapted to each ecoregion that also fully support the entire wildlife web there...like, I dunno, "local natives," or something??? If only these big ops would sell whatever was already growing on their land for eons before it got bulldozed clear to build their farms... Nahhh.

Best described to me as Phenohunting.
Phenohunting is the process of selecting genetic phenotype variations from the same breed of plant, to optimize for certain traits, an example is grow a large amount and select all of the ones that have a pronounced trait, like longer branches, stronger weather resistance, or disease resistance as an example. Phenohunting is the methodology to produce truly unique and gorgeous heirloom genetic. Humans have been selecting for genetics since we knew how to grow our first seed. Ginetic engineering, one of the first technologies.

well Andrew, I apologize for my other comment. I realize it was rash. I deleted it because I feel embarrassed by it now. I hadn’t known about your podcast. I felt like your channel was missing those topics. But I’m sorry if I had just missed some of the videos that did cover it.
I’ll look into the context you mentioned.
So I’m sorry I was mean about it and jumping to conclusions.
I do hope you’re always concerned by the weight of your influence in this movement.
Permaculture is a vital wave of information that can spread to heal the earth. Your position as a teacher can either be for fixing the problem at it’s true root Or of improving the resilience and efficiency of an inherently destructive core system.
Basically, you can work to support decolonization or colonization.
I am sorry i misunderstood you, though.
I know you need to work hard to be approachable to new skeptical audiences. And providing shallow introduction to permaculture is what’s needed in that area.
I judged you fully by that content without digging deeper. And I was hoping to provide pressure to get you to tackle larger concepts.
But if you already are using your position for that then I’m glad.

    • @amillison
      @amillison  Год назад +2

Thanks Wren and I appreciate the dialogue. There's a really fine line that I attempt to walk between giving people hard hitting information on the one side, and not pushing their buttons so much to turn them away on the other. I am still working on this and I have a lot to learn. Like I said to you before, I see my message as the whole body of my work. Some parts of it are friendly and inviting to the person who has never heard of permaculture before. Some parts are technical for the more advanced person. Some parts are more political and social. Some are more esoteric or philosophical. With these 2 videos I am currently working on with the Nation of Hawaii, we will be confronting more directly issues of indigenous sovereignty and colonialism. At the same time, the Nation of Hawaii themselves do not want to alienate anybody to their cause, because they hold a vision that can help the whole world that's built on a foundation of peace and friendship, in spite of the deep wrongs done to their people. I feel like we did a good job of that with the chinampas video as an example of how that may look. I firmly believe that the best way to tell these complicated stories are with the voices of the people themselves, and I am receiving invitations from groups all over the world to help them tell their stories. So I'll take your words and the words of others very seriously in considering how to most effectively present the incredibly complex and nuanced histories and circumstances that exist. Thanks for sharing your truth.

"The meaning of life is to give life meaning." - Unknown
When you produce something with love and passion, there is depth and meaning which can only be weighed by one's own ability to feel the impact of what they do. There is nothing deeper than to be connected with the land. It IS your ancestral roots, whereas you are born of dust and shall return to dust. You are made of the same water that coarsed the land you walk upon. Your giver of life, your host to whom you prey parasitic upon, your Mother, she asks people to go deeper than they thought possible, to be connected with what can only be a useless pile of stones and rotting biomass, this planet we call home.
Please, Cliff, understand that the human experience is far more valid than many give credit. It is not that millions of people are losing their minds over some hot topic that will burn out by next Labor Day. This phenomenon of philosophy and metaphysics has always been a part of this reality, and people will always have their experiences which simply cannot be invalidated by anyone. Depth, in such regards, is a measure which you can not perform for anyone but yourself.
Live in love friend. Learn more about permaculture and traditional practices which allowed harmony between humanity and our sacred home. Anyone who is willing to give 30+ years to practicing good stewardship in a world that tries to sway away from having any responsibility towards the land, I'd say there is a level of depth there that is quite incomparable to what you may be accustomed to. Much like we grow plants; we too must grow. I wish you peace on your journey, as you should wish well for others.
