- We went out to our Catalpa Tree Farm and picked over 200 worms! I took them home and showed how I freeze them! I still have worms from 2015 that I fish with and still catch tons of catfish with! Catalpa worms in my opinion are the best channel catfish bait out there! I hope you enjoy the video and always LIKE AND SUBSCRIBE!
This is some good information. I’ve got two trees that I planted about two years ago. Haven’t seen any worms on them yet. One is about 7-8 ft tall the other is only maybe 4-5 ft tall. Got bunches of leaves just no worms yet.
I had some trees that were the same way. You have to go find catalpa worms from another tree and put them on yours. Then Make sure they fully mature and leave the tree to go into the ground to turn into moths. Then they come out of the ground, find a catalpa tree, and lay eggs on your tree and then the cycle starts all over again. I did this and pretty much had worms from now on!
I have been searching for a way to Freeze the Worms. I like the way you have shown. Thank You
Glad I could help!
Man I know this is an old video but I really like the way you vacuum seal the worms. I don’t see how you drown the worms though, I tried for a few hours and some of them were still alive. I had to blanch them then vacuum seal them.
Thanks KENNY! Yea, it takes awhile to drown them. When I put them up most of them are dead. I used to blanch them, but even If I did it for 30 seconds it seemed liked it cooked the green inside the worm. Turned it into juice. It sounds weird, but when I put them up without doing anything to them the green in them is real thick. The skin is just as tough to. I was told you blanch them it makes the skin tougher, but that's not true in my opinion. I put two worms on a hook and throw as hard I can, then it hits the water into swift current, goes to bottom hitting rocks till it gets hung up, and it stays on the hook.
Lay an old sheet on the ground or a sheet of plastic and then you don't have to pick them out of the grass
Yea. Good idea. But usually if I get ready to pick them. I’ll cut the grass real short. Those worms will stick to a sheet like glue. It’s easier to pick them up outta grass for me.
Do you use all the ones you pick .how do I get me a tree to grow
Damn I haven't seen one of these worms in years
I’m very lucky. There is a lot of them in my state.
Never had any luck with these worms. Catfish or whatever trotline or tight line not one fish.50yrs ago.I guess just bad luck on my part.
I’ve heard that from other people to and then other ppl say that’s the only bait they will fish with. Idk if it has to do with where ppl live at or what? I know I’ve had great success using catalpa worms all over Arkansas, especially at the river.
Thanks for the info.friend of mine has been getting a bunch off of trees and just putting them in bags with corn meal, and I told him to try his vaccum sealer .
Yw! I have heard of ppl doing it that way to. I like this way the best.
Show how you put on the hook
Nice
Wonder if they would be good bait in North Dakota where these worms aren't present?
I have no idea. I’ve been curious myself to see if they would work up north in areas that they are not present.
Sending a friend request on Facebook. Please accept. Got some things about catalpa trees to share with you.
Very good I just put up 30 thank you 👍🇺🇸👮♂️
Nice! Glad I could help!
Do they not change colors after thawing out? Turn black?
No. My papa has some from 2018 still vacuum sealed. They almost look the same as they did when we sealed them up. The first time I ever used catalpa worms, they were In a frozen quart bag we got from a friend. They were 4 years old. The whole bag was black and the worms were to. It didn’t matter. My dad and I were catching catfish one after another and we got our limit and left.
I just put them in a freezer zip lock bag with water and freeze them that way
Yea I was actually going to make another video of me doing it that way. I used to do that for years. I still do sometimes. I Just make sure they’re done spitting up. Or it’ll make it bag turn dark quicker in time in the freezer. First time I used catalpa worms, they were frozen 6 year old worms in a ziploc bag. Didn’t even look like catalpa worms, they had changed color. Looked like tar. it didn’t make a difference to the fish. Just stains your hand twice as bad. Caught a bunch of catfish that day!
@@zachstuckeyoutdoors5786 absolutely have to be purged beforehand lol. My grls won't bait the hook once the worms turn...ew gross
Amazing
I have a question. Do they get larger as they eat the leaves? I've got just about all the decent sized worms off my two trees. There's a lot of little ones. I was wondering if I should wait a few days until they get bigger?
cincinnatiking yea! They will start out the size of like baby maggots and it normally take about 12 days for them to fully mature. They constantly eat nonstop until they are big enough to leave the tree go into the ground and transform into a moth. Then the moth comes out and lays eggs on the catalpa trees. Then the cycle start all over again! Be sure and leave about 10 big worms to make sure they go into the ground. That way you will always have catalpa worms. Don’t pick every single one leave some for them to reproduce!
@@zachstuckeyoutdoors5786 thank you for your expertise and advice! I really appreciate you taking the time to comment! I will definitely leave some for the next time. Thanks again!
cincinnatiking your welcome bud! I’m about to go catfishing either tomorrow or the next day with catalpa worms and I’ll have a video up. So stay tuned!! Catalpa worms are great catfish bait!
What are all the 5 gal buckets next to tree for?
My papa fills it up with water and miracle grow throughout the spring and summer. There is a little hole at the bottom where the water will slowly drain out.
No Cornmeal
None.
Looking to buy some
I might start selling some in the next few years.
My catalpa tree is huge... about 40 ft... I have never seen even one worm on it.. 🤔
do you have any catalpa trees around your area that has worms?
@@zachstuckeyoutdoors5786 not that I know of... mine is probably one of the only ones in the area.... we planted it years ago.. thought it died... cut it down to the stump and then next thing we know these big shoots came up and it took off....
@@dodieyates4186 you need to drive around and find you some worms from another tree and put them on yours. Just make sure the worms mature to full size and go into the ground and always leave some to reproduce. You should have worms from now on.
@@zachstuckeyoutdoors5786 worms for what though? Do they help the tree?
@@dodieyates4186 catalpa worms to catfish with.
Is it just cold water or hot that u soak in
Cold or mild water will be fine.
Thanks works great.
Do you sell these catalpa worms?
No. Not right now. Might start in the next few years.
What time of year are these around I haven’t seen them in my tree yet but just moved here
I’ve seen them early as May and late as October. If you never have worms, you have to introduce worms to your tree. Never pick all the worms. Leave some so the cycle will keep going. You might have multiple generations in one summer, but if you have worms in the fall I would leave as much as possible because when they go in the ground, they will hatch back out next year round May June. Depends on the weather.
No flour or corn meal needed?
No I’ve heard ppl doing that, but I don’t.
You selling any?
not right now. I plan on it in the next year or 2.
I know this is an old video- but wondering how much someone could sell them 4. Just bought a property with catalpa trees on it.
Could u use a bedsheet on ground, then shake tree ?
I guess you could but I would have to drag it from tree to tree and when they land on it. Their legs would really stick to it and have to pull them off of it. To me it would take twice as long. It is a good idea if you have tall grass. They fall off and you could find them a lot easier.
Thank you I like the video very much
Glad you liked it.
Do you sell frozen ones
I plan on it one day. My papa and I have worked hard on watering all the catalpa trees. The soil isn’t the best out there and it has a lot of slate rock in the ground. Once the trees get bigger and can hold more worms I plan on selling some.
@@zachstuckeyoutdoors5786 we dont have any in our area I understand it's from the county spraying for mosquitoes
@@montyhilton4746 sorry missed ya comment, I just seen it. Yea I know what you mean. The videos on my channel of me catfishing were at the Arkansas River and the town we drive through to get to the dam is called Dumas. It is full of catalpa trees, they are everywhere! I haven’t seen any catalpa worms yet and there is a lot farm land everywhere in that area. I see air planes all the time spraying stuff everywhere and that is why there are no catalpa worms.
Is there a market for Catawba worms and is there also an oil that is provided through the Catawba for pre baiting Your Hooks
Yea. Actually can make some money. Especially if you’re in the right area. I know this one bait shop that sells them. These guys spent 50$ and it wasn’t that many catalpa worms. Like 200 worms. I don’t use any oil.
