I've heard emotional damage IRL. I teach parkour and during class another instructor named Sam, faceplanted. I told my students "Don't break your face like that. Though in Sam's case it might be an improvement." This 12 year old Asian kid in my class immediately shouts "EMOTIONAL DAMAGE!"
I am also (South) Asian btw.

The guy (who made the “meme”) is (if anything) more sensitive to high pitch sounds than the average guy. Trust me, it’s awful. It’s so hard to find (affordable) headphones that can go decently loud without the “s” sound (or higher pitch) starting to hurt…

*STORY TIME*
I was volunteering at the middle school I used to go to (needed them volunteer hours for college scholarship) and I was helping the teacher grade when I overheard some of the students making Steven He references. I muttered under my breath "emotional damage!" Very quiet, didn't think they would hear me... _they did..._ All in unison, the whole class screamed *"EMOTIONAL DAMAGE!!"* All I could do was slowly turn around and just mouth the words "I'm so sorry" to the teacher. Oh and this happened while the class was in the middle of taking a test... Luckily the teacher was fine and I didn't get in trouble but I learned a very important lesson that day: don't underestimate the power of children's hearing!

1 year later, I watch ths again. People not in my class, but the entire school talks about you and your "Emotional Damage" meme. I also learnt your "Steven's Dad" accent and I'm having alot of fun speaking in English with the accent.
I was taking pictures of my daughter and her prom date. They were looking so serious, so I said, "Arright, for this next one, say EMoTIOnal DAMage", and that's when I got authentic smiles. And giggles. But mostly smiles.
