I have a Gravely Mach one mower. I only have about 100 hours on it now. So far it has been a great machine and I think they provide good value per price point. Toro makes a great machine as well. Overall I would say having a quality dealer is more important vs which machine you buy. Like you said, most of the major components are all the same. Find a good local dealer and build a relationship with them.
My brother has a Gravely, my uncle has a Toro. Both are comparable machines. Both cut from 2 acres (Toro) to 5 acres (Gravely). Both work exceptionally well, both are very satisfied, and neither has had any problems with either machine. The Gravely, in my opinion, does seem to be built with a more robust deck. Also, the gas tanks being able to be filled without raising the seat is a plus for me.
I've owned Gravley's all my life. We used them on our farms and personal property, mostly the commercial series. There is no comparison, Gravely has a more robust tranny, Kawasaki engines, twin tanks, duel hydraulic pumps and their decks/frames are made of superior heavy duty steel.

Interesting stuff 17 years in and i have only had exmarks and been happy overall ... took month's to get 2 new ones last year and i wish exmark would have more big boy motor options..and im done with the Kawasaki motors i have some old kohlers with 4000 plus hrs with no motor rebuild..just saying

@Howe Equipment Toro owns exmark, they put their lesser equipment under the exmark brand.
You should do a comparison with a cub cadet they have really stepped up to the big leagues with there commercial models.

I noticed people like mowers kinda how people like phone Samsung against Apple. I always hear about the cut quality and which mower is supposed to have the best exmark scag etc. So one day I saw a guy cutting a yard with his scag so I stopped to see the cut quality. I really didn't see much difference because the yard he was cutting was a crappy yard with weeds and grass so unless you're cutting manicure St Augustine or whatever nice grass yard you have. You really ain't going to see the cut quality. Here's a test for you to do. Cut someone's yard and then let the expert cut quality control team tell you what lawn mower cut it. Should be interesting. Any of the Mowers in today's market are going to cut your grass just fine. Probably going to come down to the looks of the Mowers and color of choice for most people.
So even though you are biased and are comparing a used Gravely to a new Toro, which is a bigger machine, the Gravely is by far the better.

As someone who’s ran a Gravely 200 series for the last 3 years, one thing I can definitely say about Gravely is that they have GARBAGE quality control. Many people talk about getting new gravelys with wrong fitting or loose bolts. I for one ordered mine built and when It arrived at the dealership it was missing components for the suspension seat and they put 2 different size tires on the machine causing it to scalp. Didn’t realize that til I got it all the way home and looked it over more closely. I mow 10 pretty thick acres in N Florida and it also didn’t preform really well. After trying multiple blades and having a guy from the dealership come out to my house 40 minutes away to watch it mow, he thought it was the baffles. Funnily enough Gravely actually told them on the phone to take off my baffles and run it without them because the design is not optimized for my area, like what? That sounds like BS! Now I get filthy blowback and have settled with the Fisher Barton laseredge blades. Another thing, I have an issue with the right gastank cap locking up and I have to carry around a oil wrench to get it off sometimes to refill. Can’t get the dealer to replace it under warranty even though it’s obviously a manufactured defect because I have changed caps with no affect. This has become long winded but I can say wholeheartedly I won’t ever buy another Gravely, it’ll be a JD. Oh did I mention my original dealership also stole my baffles when they took them off and I never got them back even after emailing the owner and getting no response. Yeah, dealerships are definitely important but it seems to me I have been had by the dealer and Gravely themselves at this point unfortunately.

deere 900s are very reliable and give you a replacement mower if it breaks dealers and parts never on backorder then when you trade in you get great prices and they hold resale the best engineering is the best
Ive owned numerous Toros and Scag ZTR's never Graveley. One huge thing that I notice is the quality of cut. Toro/exmark and Scag have a WAY better stripping game to there deck designs. I have seen it first hand at one of our properties...when I compare our cut(from a multiforce) to a guy that mows down the street(gravely) its not even close. I believe Gravely and other brands are cheaper but you get what you pay for. Thanks for posting
Old Gravley's were Bulletproof, the Gravley/Arien's is good quality, but the Gravley commercial, all Gravley build is poor quality, I would choose the Torro of the two
