    Thanks for showing us your space. I’m trying to figure out how to reorganize my pottery studio so I can streamline processes. I have a standing North Star slab roller. It’s positioned smack dab in the middle of everything and I use it as a nice sized work table, primarily when I glaze. Problem is it’s always so full of stuff that I haven’t been able to roll any slabs for months now. Something is definitely not working! You’ve given me some good ideas about creating stations for each process. And put everything on wheels!

      Yay!! I'm so happy you got some ideas!! I totally get it, I too had to sit down and figure out some workflow solutions as tables get cluttered and messy and I loose my focus when it's like that. I'm always changing/moving things around to help me out...and I made a resolution to keep my studio tidy this year... so far I'm doing ok 😉

    Use canvas on top/bottom of the clay with your slab roller! There will still be texture, but a rib tool can easily take care of that. You don’t want naked clay meeting the clay roller itself. Beautiful studio!

    • @SarahWaltonPottery
      @SarahWaltonPottery  5 месяцев назад +2

      Thank you so much! I have since fixed the issue with the roller dropping all those little bits...It was surprisingly easy, there is a spray adhesive from 3M that encompassed all the little bits🤭... Instead of canvas, I use a slab sheet/mat which is a synthetic material without texture and is pretty amazing for protecting the clay and giving a smooth finish at the same time...mind you there are times when I still use canvas. Thank you again for your help!

  • @hobblecreekpottery

    Great space! Jealous of your ability to spread out. For your slab roller. It looks as though the roller was left outside in the elements. It's probably rust flaking off. Maybe scrape it with a wire brush and then use machine oil and wire brush it again, then wipe it off really well. Don't wash it with water.

    Hey! I was also going to suggest contacting Bailey about the rust on the roller. Im going to assume they will tell you to clean it well with a wire brush and then use oil on it but be sure to ask what the best kind of oil is to use. I got a used slab roller as well and there is some kind of grease on the inside. Im so glad you found one! I have found most of my things on Facebook marketplace. Back in the day before Facebook I found my kiln and a ton of molds and glazes etc from a woman’s ad in the newspaper! Lol I found a 6” extruder on Facebook as well!!
    As for the kiln I know you would get soooo much use out of a bigger kiln! I don’t know how I ran a business with my little 15” kiln for so long. I have a Cress 10 27 and it’s perfect! It takes a while to make enough to fill it up but I am on a schedule that works for me!! I can’t believe how organized you are!! What an incredible space you have!! I move back and forth to my garage and inside the house when it’s too hot or too cold so im always moving stuff around. But my glazing area is completely separate so I don’t have to worry about the dust so much.

    • @SarahWaltonPottery
      @SarahWaltonPottery  10 месяцев назад +2

      Thanks for the intel on the roller! I will reach out to Bailey for sure! We are in the same age group as I too remember having to use the newspaper or the buy & sell to find used items! 🤭 I know I will do sooo much better with a larger kiln, so I just need to make enough $$$ to afford to buy one or as you suggested update it with a controller. so many things to think about!!! I was like you moving around the house in order to get my work done, then I carved out a corner and slowly spread out...I'm so lucky to have the space that I do! Thanks so much for all of your support and amazing ideas!!

      @@SarahWaltonPottery You are so very welcome! I pray you’re able to get a bigger kiln soon. I kept checking Facebook marketplace almost daily for about 6 months to find my extruder. Then the people lived in a state next to me and I’m not able to drive right now so I couldn’t get to it but they said they would deliver it!!!! They had always wanted to take a trip to where I live so they made a long weekend of it!! I was shocked! It ALL worked out soo well. I still can’t believe they did that! Anyway. I am very lucky to have the space that I have as well. I just so wish it was all in one area lol!!

    Maybe clean the roller with a stiff brass brush? It's gonna be messy but might get some of that coating off there? Mine is a silver metal one with a different surface so I'm not sure what the black is?

    • @SarahWaltonPottery
      @SarahWaltonPottery  10 месяцев назад +1

      I think I'm going to reach out to Bailey directly to see what can be done...I dont want to ruin it, but brushing it off and oiling it seems to be the consensus...I thought it was the finish on the roller (both have it) and I thought it was just failing, now everyone seems to think it's rust or something like that. 🤔

  • @MissMolly75

    I also have the 16" Bailey slab roller. Got it brand new several years ago (can't remember when, maybe 2015?). It's still like brand new, it's such an awesome brand. However, my roller is different. It's a tan color, not textured, no grainy bits. If you go to their website, that's exactly what mine looks like. I wonder if you can order a replacement roller and get the roller I have?

    Awesome Studio Sarah! I also have a basement studio (have to admin, not half as clean or organized as yours, but it works for me after many re-arranging. One question, I see you have concrete floors...how do you clean them? I wet (and I do mean WET) mop the hell out of mine as I have a french drain but if you have any suggestions I would love to hear them. Thanks!!! Waiting to see more from you soon!

    • @SarahWaltonPottery
      @SarahWaltonPottery  10 месяцев назад +1

      Hi Mariede, I do the exact same...😵‍💫! Mop the hell out of it, about 3-4 times! I forgot to show it in my video, but I have another large bucket that I pour the dirty floor water into, the silt gradually sinks to the bottom and I dump the rest outside. I plan on painting the floor in the somewhat near future which should help immensely with clean up as the paint will help with the porousness of the concrete so I may only have to mop once 🤞🏼...that's the plan anyway...🤭

      Hi Debi, I mop like crazy! About once a week, going over the studio 3-4 times. I keep a bucket in the studio (I forgot to show it) that I dump the dirty water in. Then as all the sediment sink to the bottom I then pour out the clear water and dump the dirt left over outside. I have a little rocky area in my side yard that’s perfect.

      Hi Penny! These are available on my website... here is a link you can use. sarahwaltonpottery.com/collections/my-pottery-journal
      There are 3 colour options to choose from. Once you finish the purchase you will automatically receive an email with the attachment. Download it and save it to your computer. From there you can print and reprint the pages you use the most. Most of the pages are duplicated for an easier time if your printer can do double sided printing. 😉. Thank you, they really help me stay on top of things, and I hope it helps you too!!!!

    Sarah, what plaster do you use for your wet box? I thought I would use the plaster to make my slabs for recycling my clay also.

    • @SarahWaltonPottery
      @SarahWaltonPottery  9 месяцев назад

      I used Pottery Plaster. You should be able to get it from your local pottery store. It comes in 50lbs bags. I’ve used plaster of Paris which is available at hardware stores but it’s not as good, and I always had to line my damp box with newspaper because the plaster of Paris would flake off and into ky clay (which is bad) if you can’t get the pottery plaster use the plaster of Paris but be mindful of the downside listed above. 😉

    Love your videos🥰 So I noticed you had Plainsman M350 and I just got a bunch of it and love it, but I’m a total beginner and I guess the term on plainsman’s website “semi-vitreous” has me a little spooked to use it for functional ware? Is it totally fine if I glaze (assuming no crazing of coarse) the entire piece except the bottom/foot, or could that base and foot get water in it and cause problems? I’m new to pottery so I don’t want to assume something and then give someone a mug that they put in the microwave and it burns them or something? Have you noticed anything with your m350 pieces absorbing water?🤷‍♀️
    Thanks so much for the help,
    Sydney

    • @SarahWaltonPottery
      @SarahWaltonPottery  10 месяцев назад +1

      Hi!! Thank you!! You are going to enjoy M350 as well as other Plainsman clays! Not to worry about the terminology, once it's fired up to cone 5-6 your are good to go for functional ware, it is vitrified enough to not absorb water etc. bare clay or not. If you watch some of my other videos you see that I often show off the bare clay on the outside of a pot, (food surfaces have to be sealed with a food safe glaze) if I use a pretty clay or I've marbled it...after it's been successfully fired to the proper cone temp you can even put it into the dishwasher... I have used M350 for cups and plates etc. As for someone burning their hand, I recommend darker, iron rich clay NOT be put into the microwave as the clay can get very hot. Heck, i've had some cheaper mugs get pretty dang hot in the microwave, but to be on the safe side I have little card that I insert with my pieces that provide this info...I also put it on my website...I hope I answered your questions okay and set your mind at ease...🥰

    How did you release the plaster from the IKEA bowl?

    • @SarahWaltonPottery
      @SarahWaltonPottery  8 месяцев назад

      I used Pam cooking spray in the bowl first, but it did leave a little bit of texture on the plaster, so I think next time I will just leave it alone and wait for it to shrink. I did film it but I've not had the time to edit! 😬
