    The metal halter might be uncomfortable but they are in it for a short time, and they are busy thinking about that rather than what you are doing while also restricting them from moving which keeps you and them safe while you fix em up. I am interested to know what these complainers would use instead and if they have ever handled animals this big and powerful when they are sick or injured. Because I know from personal experience, an injured animal these guys size, tends to not want to be messed with and will fight you to get the heck away. So yeah this tool for this short time is necessary and is humane. Never stop sharing your wisdom Doc, I am learning so much that is helpful to my animals, I just wish people that have no clue would keep their opinions to themselves.

    Hey doc. People keep asking about a local, before the cutting. I know that locals don't work very well on infected flesh in people,I just assumed it was the same with critters too. Is that the case?

      Correct Tom, there is literally nowhere to put the local as the abscess is directly under the skin. Luckily, distention numbs the skin a fair bit too. Cheers!

      When people create noise re metal head halters , no LA or don’t hurt the animal you know we’ve lost touch with the real side of farming .
      Large animal vets , good LAV , are damned hard to find so having one so good who isn’t anxious about showing real technique or it offending people is just really doing his job . I’ll even let the adverts run !!!
      He’s fast , thorough and you can tell he knows the end result will be good .

    Do you not get the sac out as I believe it will come back. Such a beautiful girl 💖

      Cow abscesses don’t have sacs. She would have healed beautifully (I will check her out next preg testing for you!

    She had some ugly stuff coming out of her nose as a result of the abcesses. Hope she healed up fine.

    Why don't you numb them? And how long does it take to heal?

    What’s the advantage of diluted betadine compared to hydrogen peroxide?

    • @EnochtheCowVet
      @EnochtheCowVet  3 года назад +8

      Hydrogen peroxide is impressive visually, but not great as an antiseptic we were taught. Betadyne is relatively nonirritating. We are mostly trying to dilute the pus to allow healing without irritating the tissue overly facilitating healing. Cheers!

    I thought antibiotics were only meant to be given in 10cc per spot. That syringe had way more than 10cc in.

    What causes these abcesses? As I see other videos where they get it at rear hind as well as round their neck and throat, sometimes the amount of puss released is loads.. I'm just interested how they start.. tha ks for the video

      The big ones are often old hematomas... these could be from prickles whilst she is eating I reckon. Their skin is so thick... makes mega zits!

    Too much popcorn at the movies. Those kernels can really get stuck between your molars.

    Is there a particular reason why the incision has to be made without some mild anesthetic? Seems like it would hurt her less

    • @EnochtheCowVet
      @EnochtheCowVet  3 года назад +1

      The abscess material is directly under the skin (where you would normally try to infuse anesthetic). Simple quick lance and drainage is the best treatment as anesthetic would both be ineffective and unnecessary, but cheers for asking!
