  • Driving around East St. Louis, Illinois after the opening ceremonies for Bi-State Metrolink. An intense thunderstorm had just passed over the 'city'. In 1960 82,000 people lived here. In 1990 it was 41,000. Today its 27,000. So this is State Street. Someone posted a 2010 video from here if you want to compare. His vid at 1:47 shows the same RR crossing as in this vid.

This almost looks like one of those "The World After People" documentaries …or at least a city without a single lawn mower. Nicest thing is the train. I've read that ESL was once very beautiful.

East St.Louis once had a population of some 80,000 people. Now less than 26,000❗️ Like, 1/3 of when I grew up.
I’m from University City, but had friends on the East Side. E.St.L. Always had problems [ a lot to do with the way in which it was originally founded and layed out. When the factories got too old, and too costly to maintain/ rebuild, the companies packed up, went elsewhere for cheaper. Very little revenue, and corruption, almost from its inception. But I remember a bustling, busy city, with mostly good people, just trying to live.

Worked in E.st.L. I drove all over the county and mostly through there from 2007-2022. So strange to finally see some of the missing buildings. i used to wonder what they might have looked like all the time i was down there.

Yeah, it’s been a few years since I’ve been through there.
There were block after block of derelict houses and buildings, many were burned out.
Now it looks like most have been bulldozed, and block after block of empty spaces and “ re-claimed areas.
From what I’ve seen ( videos) looks almost rural. BUT , then, I remember when it was a bustling city. Where all those empty blocks are, we’re thriving neighborhoods. Business, parks....
I had a couple friends lived over there.
It was always dangerous, but as long as one minded their own business, never had any problems ( and I’m white).
      📻🙂

I used to drive around East St.Louis IL , and go visit cousins and go to the clubs in Washington Park drive to the Gumpers and Alorton down Bond Ave . When Trucking Companies started hauling freight over the Interstates there was no more need much for Rail Roads that made East St.Louis The City it was by serving Industry and Packing Companies there so Industry left and then people followed at one time 80'000 whites lived in East St.Louis Illinois but by the 70's it was going down hill and fast and when crack cocaine and gangs started up that was the final death blow to East St.Louis Illinois.

I used to still visit East St.Louis Illinois Often until a pistol was pulled on me and then in 2008 or 2009 a fight broke out at the school at 50th and State Street police showed up and students attacked the police I had gotten off the city bus and was going into the store when Police started shooting at the teens / students attacking them I ran into the St. Joseph's Coat Veterans Center across the street from the school praying I did not get hit by the volley of bullets the police was firing and mothers screaming it was total chaos so I decided I was done with East St.Louis IL .A man can only encounter danger so many times before that danger consumes a man if he is not wise enough to decide to head for better social areas I'm on the bay front in San Diego , California but I still have memories of St.Louis and East St.Louis Illinois >> East Boogie .
