Perlman is master and a mensch! I also love his rich, plummy speaking voice. He is one of the few performers around these days who can articulate musical thoughts to lay people without sounding neither snobbish nor inarticulate. He is one of the best!
I know nothing about playing violin, and still can enjoy his teaching so much. Mr. Perlman's craftsmanship, gentleness and humanity just have such a beautiful effect on everyone.
Perlman is an Enlightened man in many aspects. Thankfully the higher power choose him to play this devilishly wonderful instrument. As a bit of an accomplished player myself he always delights and in watching and enjoying many other maestros with jealousy and full regard I find that he is like a Buddha of the instrument.. What a truly great player and person of inner wealth that shines on us all.
And yet..I can't leave ITZHAK PEARL-MAN !!! ..UNCOMMENTATED..:-) Having this video on my favourites,I return again and again to it..He is so HONEST and GOODHEARTED,and ,yes,MODEST :-).. I've learned some of ITZHAK 's SUCCESS secrets I guess ...Thank you for this GREAT MASTER class!!!
He's so kind and encouraging! Just as a teacher should be. I had to laugh when he said "that was my turn to be nervous!". Imagine Itzhak Perlman feeling nervous about playing! He's such a lovely guy - and it's even more amazing, because he's such a genius that he could get away with being cold and exacting.
What a man, an incredible talent and a great communicator too. I've seen many masterclasses which plonk a genius on a stage who can't face people and teach.
I have seen many a masterclass and Perlman is one of the most kind. Looking beyond the hero worship the value really is in mining gems of wisdom from one of the greatest masters of our time. It is as if the musician him/herself is allowing the master to tune them.
No me canso nunca de ver este video, creo que el Maestro Perlman ha de ser una gran persona, ver este video me emociona, gracias maestro! Never I am tired to see this video, I think the maestro Perlman has been a great person, to see this video make my emotions on my skin, thank you maestro!
Oh, Perlman, I LOVE YOU!! I really thought a masterclass with him would be much more expensive, I would pay that only for being with him one hour... but I think the problem is not the price, it is: how do you contact him and convinced to have one hour??
I've never personally met him but I've had the priviledge of being backstage with him a few times when he has come to detroit. and I've also been to a couple of rehearsals when he is playing a concerto with the dso. It's not so much that he's cranky I don't think, it's more like he has just been playing for a long time and knows how he likes things to run. so when it doesn't go his way he...makes it go his way. My teacher plays in the dso and he says the same thing.
@Refosproductions I worked a catering function where the owner of my company asked Perlman "How is everything?" He said regarding the teachers who were performing... "All I have left are my ears, tell the band to stop or I am leaving"
Its about comfort some like it one way others the other way. I dont think playing with or without a rest makes a big difference. I have to agree with the fella above MOST of the ppl use them nowadays, its totally personal though
@Refosproductions same here. I mean I can play concerts and play in front of relatives but one thing I cannot do is play for someone I dont personally know in front of an audience then have him critique me.
He plays a stradivarius right now I'm not sure what he played when the video was mad. Usually famous soloist charge upward of 400 dollars an hour. It sounds like a lot but keep in mind their time is more limited than their students, and their students are generally people (adults) getting ready for auditions with symphonies to get a job. Most musicians stick it out and hope for a master class since they are usually free to students, paid by an organization.
For those of you who watched the "Perlman in Russia" video in its entirety, what is the title of the piece she is playing at 1:20 and Perlman interrupts "Can you show off here" and then he exposes his trouser braces
Perlman is just so layed back and listens to every single little thing, Anyone know the name of the first piece. By the way, just to add in, I'd trade my soul and my life to be taught by Itzhak Perlman, or Zuckerman for that matter because he's a violist. I've been playing for 7 years now, I hope to be as good as Zuckerman in 40 or 50 years, I need money to pay for exquisite lessons though haha, "Not polite Gypsy music" hehe Perlman.
@Refosproductions --but he uses constructive critisism...and is nice about it. My teacher always tells me.."You did really well" It's really good for the soul and helps you keep your passion for your instrument and not get discouraged.--Joni
Is this from a TV documentary or an actual movie? how can I get a copy of this tape? is it available in stores? what is the name of the documentary? many thanks for posting it !!!!!!!
@Stringy007 You don't know what you're talking about. Heifetz changed violin playing forever. He is the violinist whom all others are compared with, not Perlman. Perlman is the first to admit that he could only dream of playing like Heifetz. Perhaps the only other violinist who compares with Heifetz is Michael Rabin. Perlman & Rabin studied with Ivan Galamian & Perlman attended MR's funeral. Heifetz's abilities were extraordinary & both Perlman & Stern revere him as the top of the heap.
How can you play without a shoulder rest??? Doesn't the instrument slip out (especially when you shift)? Musicians used to play without shoulder rests years ago but I think they have definately been an improvement!!!
Not only a master of performing the violin, Itzhak is a marvelous and inspiring teacher!
if i played in front of him, my whole body would have been doing vibrato. he is so great and i love him. thank you sososo much for posting
the violin is so hard, IF YOUR NERVOUS it shows
Eveytime i watch him play i cant help but smile.

How can you not love this guy. As a violinist and artist he is a legend, yet you just want to rap him up and take him home with you.
He is some kind of genius...
It is a gift.
Just fantastic musicianship and a loving personality...❤
Thank you for posting.....
A great artist with a great personality and soul, that means a lot...
I get chills listening to Perlman play. How in the world does he do that so effortlessly?
Bless him - I bet he never turns up to a masterclass without practising now!
He's so kind and encouraging! Just as a teacher should be. I had to laugh when he said "that was my turn to be nervous!". Imagine Itzhak Perlman feeling nervous about playing! He's such a lovely guy - and it's even more amazing, because he's such a genius that he could get away with being cold and exacting.
i play guitar, but i love watching perlman masterclasses. its so rare to see a master get so happy when someone nails what they're suggesting
I admire how Mr Perlman said yes to these people. I agree 100% with E mach. He is a mensch.
What a man, an incredible talent and a great communicator too. I've seen many masterclasses which plonk a genius on a stage who can't face people and teach.

he's..........AMAZING
Maestro Perlman….what an absolute treasure!
That was a young Pavel Berman playing Ravel’s Tzigane at the beginning. He’s become a great violinist. His dad was the great pianist, Lazar Berman.
He teaches SO much better than Heifetz...
Thimplum True
He has a better sense of humor than Heifetz.
No he doesn't. Heifetz was a wonderful teacher and so is he.
Beautiful memoris today thank you Prof.Itzhak Perlman
The first ten seconds i thought why is this guy talking over the video and i realized oh shit its Perlman haha nevermind
Perlman
Model Master
Pleasant personality, great violinist.
Thanks
4:05 Amazing transformation with this little bit of advice...
Very interesting Maestro Itzhak Perlman.Your master class is very interesting!🎻🌹
Very interesting and beautiful Maestro Itzhak Perlman, i like Your video very much 🥰🎻
I love Itzhak. It's because of him that I began to play the violin at a young age.
Perlman's the best.
Wow what a great teacher!!
loving the clear aviators
Thank you very very much!!
wow these students are all so good... and yet perlman finds ways to improve them, it's amazing.
Bravo!
Merci.
"I played the Wieniaswky, I happened to know it, and she sort of.. eh.. faked through it and it was just fine" Lol Perlman was always a character
Qué maestro!!!
Thys is very interesting! 🎻🌷
brilliant!!
Danielli0402,
The piece is "Tzigane" by Ravel. It's wonderful.
Perlman is great. So inspiring. So funny! haha.
Right after it cuts off: "Now, can someone please ask me a real question."
Oh, Perlman, I LOVE YOU!!
I really thought a masterclass with him would be much more expensive, I would pay that only for being with him one hour... but I think the problem is not the price, it is: how do you contact him and convinced to have one hour??
@KuiackMusic same. Itzhak has been a huge influence on my guitar technique
wow what a charismatic personality
Agreed!
I've never personally met him but I've had the priviledge of being backstage with him a few times when he has come to detroit. and I've also been to a couple of rehearsals when he is playing a concerto with the dso. Great hahahaha this guy is amazing.
Hey he gave my music teacher a master class at Yale when my teacher was attending. :)
he probably means louder and richer. the tone doesn't get thinner near the bridge, unless you have like no arm weight going for you.
Yup.
@Refosproductions
I worked a catering function where the owner of my company asked Perlman "How is everything?" He said regarding the teachers who were performing... "All I have left are my ears, tell the band to stop or I am leaving"
Can anyone tell me what the name of the song itzhak perlman play at last? Thanks.
The middle section of Tchaikovsky Valse-Scherzo
What is piece is the "not polite gypsy music" the young student at the beginning is playing?
HOLY CRAP! I heard an actual improvement...
Its about comfort some like it one way others the other way.
I dont think playing with or without a rest makes a big difference.
I have to agree with the fella above MOST of the ppl use them nowadays, its totally personal though
it is so great to hear him encourage, as opposed to heifitz who preferred to dismantle his students emotionally.
@Refosproductions same here. I mean I can play concerts and play in front of relatives but one thing I cannot do is play for someone I dont personally know in front of an audience then have him critique me.
Could anyone tell me what's the concert he plays in the end of the video? ;D Thanks
It was merely a manner of speaking. I only wanted to say, that I find him very personable and charming.
Lsmic. "This is international language. Forte, piano, piano, forte."
@koxilakos1193
Yes, it is, one of them. Played by Pavel Berman.
actually from my experience (of course he is a little older now) he has been a bit cranky. but he's allowed to be....he's Itzhak Perlman
no some violinists necks are too short for one so they use a cloth or like me I use a very soft alternative foam rest. It's very possible.
He plays a stradivarius right now I'm not sure what he played when the video was mad. Usually famous soloist charge upward of 400 dollars an hour. @kiop9000 He does. He teaches some of the Pre-College students in Juilliard.
Tzigane by Maurice Ravel. Awesome piece isn't it
Perlman is just so layed back and listens to every single little thing, Anyone know the name of the first piece. What Year is this? Thanks for sharring
@Refosproductions --but he uses constructive critisism...and is nice about it. My teacher always tells me.."You did really well" It's really good for the soul and helps you keep your passion for your instrument and not get discouraged.--Joni
Is this guy class, or what? Wonderful.
Is this from a TV documentary or an actual movie? how can I get a copy of this tape? is it available in stores? what is the name of the documentary?
many thanks for posting it !!!!!!!
sorry i can't but i just wanted to say that the guy at 5:38 cracks me up!! haha
😍
Was The boy who was playing Tzigane by Ravel the young Pavel Berman, son of the great pianist Lazar Berman?
isnt tzigane the piece played in the video??
@Refosproductions playing for Mr. Perlaman AND an audience would just give me a heart attack
What was the first song that was played?
What music was the boy playing?
what is the name of the piece that the girl is playing?
@Stringy007 You don't know what you're talking about. Heifetz changed violin playing forever. He is the violinist whom all others are compared with, not Perlman. sorry, just wanna ask wat piece is he playing ? not itzhak perlman
i didnt practice! lol
How can you play without a shoulder rest??? Doesn't the instrument slip out (especially when you shift)? Musicians used to play without shoulder rests years ago but I think they have definately been an improvement!!!
You can hear the kid get better as gets advice.
The first or the second, or the last piece?
what piece is the second person playing?
I practiced today! lol
i would like him to teach me theory and articulation so i can be a master guitar player
What dvd is this from?
co-stanza!
+Kady Sternberg It is Tzigane by Ravel.
Wieniawski Caprice #4 in A Minor
I do? .... mmmm... naaaaaah... After careful consideration, I'm pretty sure I don't want to kidnap Itzhak Perlman.
what's the last one?
im counting how many 'exactly' he has said
@barquester or saxophone from kenny G
