    Awesome build ! I've had my exo-terra built for over a month now while I've tried unsuccessfully to raise fruit flies. Giving up, I've put in an anole (from my electric meter). He has adapted immediately. :-) On the top, I've had glass cut to fit on the existing screen. It works fine so far.

    • @NorthernFrogger
      @NorthernFrogger  3 года назад

      Sorry to hear you've had trouble raising fruit flies... What kind of media are you using?

    • @ravingcyclist624
      @ravingcyclist624 3 года назад

      @@NorthernFrogger Just my fault. Drowning them, suffocating them, mold, etc. It takes a couple of weeks to recover. Having frogs depending on me feeding them fruit flies would not be good. There is plenty of readily available food for lizards: crickets and all sorts of worms.

    • @Bunny-ns5ni
      @Bunny-ns5ni Год назад +1

      @@ravingcyclist624 I'm pretty late with responding, but perhaps newborn red runners would suffice? They're very small, being slightly larger than adult fruit flies. Once a large enough colony population is achieved(after 4-6 months), you'll have baby roaches constantly. They're far easier to maintain than crickets.
      The easiest and simplest solution for preventing mold in a FF culture is with bakers/brewers yeast. I can confidently say it works, after nearly three years of breeding the same flies year round, I've never had mold problems after mixing a fair portion into fresh media when making new cultures. As for drowning the FFs, it shouldn't be happening if you make the media evenly balanced between damp and on the drier side. Slightly more damp than the consistency of mashed potatoes is best.
      I'm probably too late to respond, but I thought I'd give it a try.

    Pro tip,
    When scrapping any kind of gunk off a glass tank with a blade, wet the glass first, really helps the blade sliding on the glass and alot less chance of scratching the glass, you wouldn't sponge down a dirty car when its dry.....

    Do you think there is a difference between glass top or plexiglass top?( like for the light or something)

    • @NorthernFrogger
      @NorthernFrogger  3 года назад +2

      Yeah I don't like using plexiglass... I find it will always warp/sag over time, and it gets scratched up easily. I do remember reading something a long time ago about it not transmitting as much light as glass, but I have no idea how reliable that info was. I imagine it also depends on the thickness of the piece as well as the exact type, because not all plexiglass is created equal.
      Where I'm at though, glass tends to actually be cheaper than plexiglass, and I've found most glass shops will cut it to size for you for no extra charge, so it's a no-brainer to use glass 🤷‍♂️

    • @NorthernFrogger

      It's a mix of EcoEarth/Plantation Soil, CocoHusk, some type of fir bark/orchid bark pieces, and some sphagnum moss. It will slowly wear down/come off over time, but I find pretty good results just being very liberal with the silicone and pressing the background mix down into it.

    man just yesterday i had one of my Dendrobates tinctorioous bahkos die. Idk what happened it was like 1.5 years old and it just stopped eating and reacted weirdly to the water i misted it with. What was weird is that the other frog inside didnt react to the water at all and is completely healthy. It started getting skinny because it wasnt eating, so i made sure to put extra flies inside, but it still didnt eat.

    • @ryanhancock2155
      @ryanhancock2155 3 года назад +1

      what is super weird is that the other frog inside never bullied it, is very healthy right now, and is fat if anything because she ate all the extra flies that i put in there for the sick one.

      Dang man sorry to hear that

    • @NorthernFrogger
      @NorthernFrogger  3 года назад +1

      Sorry to hear that, it's always rough losing frogs with no explanation. It could be any number of things, from parasite or bacterial infection, or maybe even something like a congenital defect that finally manifested.
      The other thing to keep in mind with tincs is that sometimes you won't see outright bullying, but the weaker frog may still be stressed and living in fear. This can lead to them not eating as much, which can make them even weaker and less outgoing and create a feedback loop that is hard to recover from. Or even small/temporary stress could be enough to suppress the immune enough for an infection of some sort to take hold. I would keep a close eye on the other one and try to get her to a vet if she starts losing weight or refuses food.

    Is it dangerous to keep poison dart frogs?

    • @NorthernFrogger

      Not really, no. They are not poisonous in captivity because their toxins come from their diet in the wild. There may be some small salmonella risk that can be mitigated by just washing your hands, but you shouldn't really be handling them anyway. Dogs and cats are more dangerous to keep as pets than dart frogs lol.
