Burton Skeleton Key Powder Test and Snowboard Review

- The Burton Skeleton Key Snowboard is a great freeride/all-mtn choice for deep days, riding in the trees, and searching for natural freestyle terrain alike. This is a snowboard that is going to be able to tackle technical steeps and float in powder, without having an overly aggressive ride. You'll get a very manageable feel with this board, and it will provide performance through a wide variety of conditions and situations. The Skeleton Key is very similar to the Deep Thinker, but has a bit more of a directional build that will offer more performance for freeriding and powder. This video was filmed February 2019.

Hi TJ when r you doing a review of your boots how they holding up so far , comfort ,response etc, also you haven’t mentioned the custom insoles you had made r they a game changer or waste of money ,Thanks
I have 4 snowboards and I always find myself wanting to ride my skeleton key. Groomers, park, pow, steeps, trees. Love that board.
how does it handles in the park??? when i tried it it was fun with in the jumps but i did not hit other park features. Also riding it switch was difficult for me due to that short tail.
That's crazy it looks way to snowy and nice out there I loved it
Hell yeah, stoked you finally released the review on the Skeleton Key! Been riding one all season, it's honestly my favorite board I've ever ridden. It can absolutely rail turns on hardpack as well, not just a pow board. It can seriously ride anything. It became my daily driver out of my 3-board quiver. Also rode a Deep Thinker 160 and Kilroy Custom 158.
Same its my favorite board. I can lay out carves. Its a quiver killer!
Skeleton Key FTW! You like it more than the Deep Thinker?
@@BoardArchive I do, actually. I really only took the Deep Thinker out when there was really deep pow since it was the bigger board, or if it was a really icy day where edge grip was critical. Any other situation though, I rode my Skeley.
@@BoardArchive I boot out on the deepthinker, for big mountain riding (e.g. Revelstoke) I'd go Skeleton key for a month without thinking.
Just tested the skeleton key, such a fun board and flex but compared to the deep thinker it had way less grip
Saving up for this snowboard. Really excited.
Awesome man! Gonna be sick!
SK for sure got a very cool shape super fun board !
30cm pow in spring season? Too good!! Long whistler season is always dope
I wish, this was actually filmed in February
What an awesome day!!
Missing these days!
Excellent review , Thanks TJ.
Thanks Steve
It's really light. Feels like a toy compared to other directionals. Felt like I had to hold back on it...however for the person that rides on a few vacations a year this thing is perfect.
Awesome board and excellent video !!!!
T.J , please test the Rome Powder Division 157 moon tail !!!!
i just bought one today, excited
Sick powder day and great review like always 👌
thanks man, such a fun day out there
Debating whether to get the Skeleton key or the Burton Custom Camber. Looking for an all mountain board that will do it all, ride mostly in east coast but take a couple trips out West. What would you recommend?
Great review as always!
Considering picking one of these up for a Japan trip this coming year as I want a more powder oriented all mountain board. Do you think it will handle the pow there or any recommendations would be great!
I'm 200 lbs and I rode the 158 all last year. I scored multiple 1ft plus powder days and even a few 2ft plus days and this board crushed it. I was able to remain balanced on the board and I never felt any strain on my back foot. The agility in trees is amazing and It does great on soft groomers too. I rode it on one or two icy days and that was the only time I felt like I had to dial down my turns. I think if I had adjusted out of my powder stance it might have done better on the cold hard pack.
Another solid review man. 🤙🏼
thanks rob
I just picked up a Burton stun gun. Waiting for some fresh snow. Gonna be awhile.
Tj! What's your favourite powder board at the moment?
Probably the Bataleon Surfer
@@BoardArchive have you tried the endeavour archetype ?
@@BoardArchive Thanks for the reply! Huge fan! Been riding the Proto Type Two this season 🤙 Will definitely consider a more park-oriented board next season. Qa'pla!
Nice. I almost got last years limited version.
Great stuff!! TJ is the man!! Snowboarding champ! Again AMAZING video! Love your content 😍 your video’s even inspired me to start my own snowboard yt channel! Mind taking a look?
burton fish or this one? which one is more useful and suitable for powder?
Would you recommend switching to a park specific boot for park days? I mean you often switch your snowboard out to a park specific one, is it worth doing with boots as well. Like is having a quiver of boots any good idea? Or do you just use one boot for every style of riding you do?
I go with one boot that works well for everything, a nice mid flex standard lace boot. Having a stiffer boot on deck for big mountain riding could be worth it, but for me I think its more trouble than its worth.
@@BoardArchive So having a backup pair isn't worth the space then?
My next board fosho
Hey TJ what type of binding are you riding with the SK. Just picked one up. Any suggestions?? Enjoy watching you ride!
Meanwhile it's 60 degrees here at snowbowl Flagstaff and there's more dirt than snow.
Just wondering for a board with a swallow tail, should the board be shorter or longer than what you would usually ride?
what size is your skeleton key?
How big is the board you rode? And what’s your weight and height? Thanks brother
Can this be a daily driver for groomers as well? How's the edge hold on hard snow?
What do you think the better all mountain board is the warpig or SK
Is it good idea burton sk with burton mission bindings ? thank you
What bindings would you suggest for this board?
Would you recommend this one or the flight attendant for someone who will ride groomers and backcountry powder too?
Was wondering the same thing. Was thinking of ultimately getting both. Seems like the FA is better in harder stuff and chopping through crud with serious speed downhill. But then the skeleton great for pow and trees.
Avesome video!!! TJ, Could you make TOP 5 snowboards for powder video? I have seen your video about TOP 5 snowboards for powder and park but I want to buy pure pow board for the next season and it is hard to decide.. So far I am leaning towards Bataleon Surfer, but I am really not sure..
Yes I plan on having a powder board list for next season
Hey TJ, what size SK did you demo?
This was a 154 I believe
Thanks!@@BoardArchive
Hi TJ, I just bought a SK "blind" without having the chance to test/ride it. It is 150cm for a 5'6, 160 lbs, size 10 boots guy. I'm not really sure though if I should have gone with the 154 instead. I presume you and your buddies did ride the shite out of it. Should I keep(and unwrap) the 150 or should I go monday morning and change it for a 154?, what do you think?, cheers!
can you do butter with it?
Bindings recomed for this board , for pow , tries , groomers ? . Tgank you
How would you compare this to the Orca in powder?
The Orca is very different, it will offer better float than the SK on a powder day
@@BoardArchive Thanks. I was hesitating between the Orca and the SK. I managed to find an Orca about 6 weeks ago and it is just such a fun board no matter the conditions. I did manage to try the SK but not in any powder and hands down the Orca was just way more fun on the piste, post powder crud, boardercross and any other snow I tried it on.
Rode a 158 SK all year, loved it! Just picked up the 2020 Orca because of its ability to handle firmer snow. Cant wait to try. I have a feeling the SK will stay in the rotation though.
Does it cost anything to demo boards?
Hey, I remember tj doing a review on a fishtail pow board that had a very pronounced shovel nose on it, can anyone link the video or give me the name of the board?
Ryan Judd bataleon surfer?
Geezus! Y'all are still getting pow!? I'm in the wrong place!
lonewolfroaming it was filmed in february
@@lukecorbett56 ahhh didn't see that. Would still trade California for BC in a heart beat though!
first!!
