In this video I will explain the difference between a theoretical and actual gable rafter measurements and how they can be used when designing components for building your roof.

This was useful, thank you. I have a question: The Wood Framing Construction Manual states: "Where notches are made at supports, they shall not exceed one‐fourth the actual rafter depth."
How do I calculate the actual rafter depth? Based on context from other parts of the manual, I suppose the actual rafter depth where the notch would be made to bear on a wall or beam would be a measurement parallel to a rafter's ridge cut.
So a 5.5in 2x6 dimensional lumber rafter would have an "actual rafter depth" at the ridge that would increase as the pitch of the roof increases, and would decrease as the pitch of the roof decreases.
Am I on the right track?
