  • Timothee Chalamet has had one of the greatest young acting careers of all time, from rising to fame for playing Elio in Call Me By Your Name directed by Luca Guadanigno to starring alongside Saoirse Ronan in both Greta Gerwig films Lady Bird and Little Women. To then eventually starring as Paul Atreides in Dune alongside Zenday and Jason Mamoa. It's safe to say everything has worked out pretty well for Timothee Chalamet, and in this video essay I attempt to explain how I think Timothee Chalamet actually planned all of this and worked out a formula to having the best career possible as an actor. Timothee Chalamet is also starring in Bones And All which releases in theatres next month.

I do agree that he has chosen his roles masterfully to give himself this brand of a prestigious actor. Although one has to remember, actors don’t always have as much control over their careers as one may think. Timmy auditioned for Spider-Man, if he had gotten that his career would probably look more like Tom Hollands now.

Aside from being a skilled, polished actor, Timothee’s appeal is grounded, not just in his looks, but in his kindness, humbleness, intelligence and pure zest for life. His rise to fame has been a breath of fresh air. Timothee seems to be a perfectionist who seeks excellence in all he does. His Agent has guided him well. It’s a pleasure to see him grow as an artist. Something to add and keep in mind is:
Hollywood is filled with so many actors who are just celebrities, people who seem as though acting is their second career. Not to mention nepotism playing a part in who gets what role nowadays. Timothee is almost a reminder of what "fame" used to be in Hollywood, it really grounds you. I remember seeing iconic actresses like Hepburn and Marilyn in movies, and I was surprised that they could sing and act! Because as a gen Z, in my mind, if you are famous it means almost nothing talent wise. I find that quite interesting.

I also think that people also don't necessarily need to do indie films to show how great of an actor they are. They just need to choose good characters regardless of whether they come from small budget films or blockbusters since there's are cases like heath ledger who actually became know worldwide and got recognition for his acting by playing the joker one of most mainstream characters in comics and in superhero movies and l don't think anyone for even a second thought of typecasting heath for such a role

Ehh, he for sure is exaggerated a bit in this kinda discussion because we don't get a lot of new his kinda actors because there is not a lot of that kinda movies made (movies which actually needs a character actor). So it's easy to stand out when there isn't really competition in his age group. I feel like he has a lot to learn but he Can Become pretty great. He is good yes. Still for example Dune was a total dud for his performance, I get what they were trying to do and it felt like it just simply wasn't working at all and felt way too cold. The micro-emoting wasn't very well done, it sometimes didn't come thru or was way too hazy of where is he going with it, other times it was just that.. a stale face. I also haven't felt any charisma oozing from him which has been a problem also in other performances that have needed it. Like yeah he can do that brooding poet boy guy almost now as a gimmick quite well but it feels like he leans on it way too much when there would be so much other things to do in a scene and explore. Like for example something is wrong when in The King Chalamet is harshly overshadowed by Robert Pattinsons few minutes of screen time. No matter how good Pattinson is and had his own growth to it with time, he shouldn't be able to be that much more memorable than all of the Chalamet scenes in the whole movie together.
This all may sound harsh and trashing but I'm just pushing back that he would be nearly ready for what he seeems to want or people say he is. He would need to widen his chataloque and take risks. Again going to Pattinson, after the bs saga of Twilight dude goes to do The Rover and acting mentally handicapped brother in apocalyptic situation with Guy Pierce and actually can keep up with him and bring the hard part home even tho you do see that he is still trying to get there where he is now. He was doing the smart thing and trying to find good directors with good parts where he can show and hone Differend sides of his skillset. I just don't see Chalamet going enough out of his comfort zone to truly start to shine. Still yes again, he is good, above average, a lot of potential.

Another thing that I think makes Timothee such a success story is his professionalism and ability to network. By all accounts Timothee has a very professional work ethic, he is able to handle himself very well on and off screen, and he doesn't let his ego get in his way by creating onset drama. Most people who have worked with him in the past have had positive experiences with him. Networking is one of the pillars to success in show business, and I think the fact that Timothee has built up such a strong reputation in the industry means even more big name filmmakers and auteurs will want to work with him, which I think increases his chances of gaining an Oscar in the not too distant future.

His acting as Elio really sold me on him. He's officially my favourite actor as Elio is not the most difficult role out there but requires emotional intelligence and understanding of how that character thinks. With the way he portrayed Elio was so genuine that it actually felt like he was a real person in a sense.
Especially that last two scenes of the phonecall with Oliver and Elio by the fireplace. There's barely any 'reactive' emotions just what is (seemingly) a calm conversation but Timothee Chalamet's performance made it so gut wrenching that I have not forgotten a single piece of that role.
Timothee chalamet isn't just a good actor because of his characters, he's a good actor because he understands his characters, what they're going through, how they're feeling and mostly importantly how to display those feelings. He is probably one of the most emotionally aware actors I've seen

I especially agreed with your points on Timothée's role in "Dune": he was the perfect choice for this franchise exactly because he wasn't a franchise actor and could do so much more with it than just play it out. This is also partially what I believe has made this rendition of Herbert's "Dune" a success - both Timothée and Zendaya are incredible in the acting craft and their portrayal made the universe believeable. To play Paul Atreides couldn't have been easy as he's a character of much depth and intensity that I find have translated well onto the screen with Timothée's portayal.

the title was a tad bit misleading haha, because i thought this was somehow going to roast timothée but i'm so glad i watched! you put everything i've been thinking about his rise to fame in the perfect wording. the thing you mentioned about him playing Paul Atreides was spot on, because even though Atreides is his biggest/blockbuster role, when i think "Timothée" i still think "Elio". even though Call Me By Your Name is a smaller film, timothée shines so bright that you cannot deny how incredible he truly is. him as Elio or him portraying Nic Sheff in Beautiful Boy are two of my absolute favourite roles he's ever done and the first roles that come to mind whenever i think of him, despite them being smaller projects. anyways, love the video, very well said! :)

I disagree that Call Me By Your Name did well because of "sheer luck". TC managed to portray the sweet poignancy of a teen discovering first love and sexuality in such an effortless and real manner; and viewers recognize that. Also, his portrayal in Netflix's The King, a very difficult character to play even for seasoned actors, got people to notice him. The talent, tripled with his good personality and unusual good looks, made him rise quickly, further propelled by his friends/colleagues who are always saying good things about him. I think people are just ready for a young, talented actor who is a genuinely nice person with good work ethics rather than some spoiled star splashing front page news on tabloids. This and the fact that he is so adventurous in his fashion choices, just gain him stardom quicker than most. I just hope he continues to shine and mature well despite the challenges of Hollywood.

I think timothee’s performance and the beauty all around between the story and the location it was filmed really made it one of the most beautiful movies I have ever watched. He is pretty charismatic on screen and really pulls ppl in with his nuanced acting. I watched little women because I loved saoirse in ladybird and had read the book before. She was amazing in the movie obviously, but the surprise was that i came out loving this guy and Florence too. Then went on to watch Dune just because he was in it. I didn't have much expectations going in since the trailer made me feel like it would either be a spectacular hit or a flop. I really liked it tho and he is the main reason. It's such a pleasure to watch him act. The movie was a bit slow for my taste (now that I look back) and the world building was not to my taste but i was so invested in Paul and his intense on screen presence that i barely noticed all that. Definitely one of the best actors of his generation.
Also what you said is true. All his movie choices are deliberate and a lot of care has been taken in just choosing them. This again just sets him apart from the others I think.

@@thejessegrant ok but even after a hit. The only thing you can do is still take offers or reject them. You cannot plan to do a specific role unless you actually write and produce the project. He was LUCKY to have the opportunity to accept those offers even after his first hit. And you personally don't really know what blockbusters he was offered that he turned down. I agree if he was offered a blockbuster super hero role and chose to do an indie instead then good on him. But I think there is a great misunderstanding of the acting industry beeing somehow in the actors control and it truly isn't . You simply can only control how well you perform in the audition and maybe a small amount of control of which offer you pick IF you are lucky enough to have multiple offers but this is akin to 5% of what actually happens with your career which is really not in the actor's hands. Please don't assume people are not watching your video when they comment just because it doesn't fit your hypothesis.

Nice review and analysis. The only difference is that people cannot simply follow Timothée's path -- when the camera catches him at the right angle, he's stunning, he's a profoundly good actor, he's multi-talented - he can sing, dance and play instruments: basically do whatever he puts his mind to. That's not easily duplicated. And he also is charismatic and befriends his directors and casts. Unbeatable combination.

I admire how he refused to be pigeonholed into the sad boy roles after CMBYN. Doing Wonka, for example, was a huge gamble that paid off. Timothee Chalamet is the type of person of quality and substance that Ezra Miller had such potential to grow into if only Ezra hadn't been sucked in by the DC dollar signs. What a waste. You are spot on about Timothee's choice to deny mind numbing Batman type franchises that would have made him rich, but not allowed him to grow and develop into such a talented and respectable person.
