In this Hunger Strike guitar lesson video, I will show you how to play this much loved classic by the supergroup Temple of the Dog.
Before you get started, make sure you tune your guitar to dropped "D" tuning which is, starting from the 6th string, D A D G B E.
There are only a couple of different guitar riffs used for the entire song. However, the main riff riff does contain some variations which I will also explain in the video lesson.
The main riff consists of a pretty tricky arpeggio picked pattern. The thing that makes it tricky is the timing between the picking hand and the fret hand. You have to let the top melody note ring over into the next pattern which can feel a bit awkward when you first try it.
I will explain exactly how to do this in the video lesson so hopefully it will be easy to understand.
That same riff has some slight variations as the song moves along and the dynamics are picked up a bit. Each of the two variations present their own challenges as well so I will carefully break them down.
We then have a big heavy power chord riff with a long slow half-step bend. This riff is actually very easy to play so I think you won't have very much trouble with it.

@Ron Coleman I understood Max Kroven to be saying that in the lesson, he did NOT have the low string tuned to D and that it's easier if you do that. Maybe I misunderstood.

So an F# power chord I think it's called on the low e and a strings than followed by a d power chord and an e power chord on the 5 and 7 than 7 and 9 of the a and d strings.
The chorus is that F# power chord with the open e once in awhile

The acoustic version is tuned to d so a whole step down on every string and uses power chords.
The other version with grohl and krist are in standard and uses mostly open chords instead of power chords
