Best and favorite Batman run, I still have some of those comics when they came out. Batman getting his back broken, Wolverine getting his adamantium removed by Magneto and Superman's death are the most impactful comic book moments for me during the 90's. Just two things: 1) Favorite Nightwing Costume and 2)Sucks they didn't include the Azrael introduction :( ....
Is azreals intro in the sword of azreal or in the first volumes of azreal (fallen angel)

DC also forget (haha "forget") to add Batman/Punisher : Lake of Fire. This story is IN CONTINUITY as mentioned in one issue of Knightsend :)
That one makes a little more sense because of licensing issues.
And there's also MITEFALL story not included here and short (lost?) story from „Batman Villains Secret Files” where we see how Bane breaks into Wayne Manor.

I really love the covers. Unfortunately vol 1 and 3 are out print. Vol 3 is going for between 200-400 on the used market. Do you think there will be a reprint? Keep up the great work, Omar!
Vol 3 is the one impossible to get. Unfortunately DC does not do reprints like Marvel..not sure why
its not a question of if, its a question of when
2023 is the 30th anniversary of the story, so I'm hoping DC reprints these soon.

I know this is an old video, but do you know if there are any plans to re-print Vol 3? I've been thinking about upgrading, I have the thick tradesm but I can only find vol 1 and 2 for sale. The only vol 3 I've found is on eBay for $800 which is insane lol!

I have the trades with the Deodato covers, the bought the last collections digitally when they finally collected Knightquest
I really loved those Deadato covers.
First up, I just want to say that the Azrael Zero Hour showcase is collected in the third TPB volume. Read it recently, and its def there.
I really love this Saga, altough nostalgic reasons might factor into it somewhat
. I feel it still holds up very well, altough Knightquest does drag on somewhat. But it still feels very important and exciting to me.
Its great to know that the Quest, JL Task Force, The Serch for Alfred and Troika are collected, as I dont own or read those. It makes getting the omnis tempting, despite the story dragging out a bit at times
Either way, they are out of print presently, so temptation averted. At least until they are reprinted 🤣.
I love omnis, but in this case... I have the OG trades, two of which are by Titan Books. So that's basically part 1 in two parts, and part 3 in one more.
Then I got the thick paperbacks. To get my collection to match the omnis, I got Prelude, the Search and Troika from the new 9-part series. Doesn't look nice on the shelf, but collects everything except one(!) Showcase issue.
So, I am happy now. But maybe, just maybe, I might go for the three omnis or just the whole 9-part-series. We'll see.
I hate the fact that these expensive omnis don't include Sword of Azrael.

Awesome look at these new editions! Does Vol. 2 KnightQuest have any missing issues from The Search? or is every issue from that second part collected? I remember comparing this pre-order details with the original singles and thinking there was 1 or 2 missing? Thanks!
Everything is in volume 2. The entire Search for the first time. It's just the Sword of Azrael that for some reason they left out.
Hey Omar! Great review as usual. Totally agree with you that Kelley Jones was NOT the artist that should have done the covers of these omnibuses. (I would have gone with Shane Davis myself). I got all three trade paperbacks, ONLY for completion purposes. I absolutely HATE, HATE, HATE, HATE, HATE, HATE the "Knightsquest" storyline, partly because I never liked Jean-Paul Valley as Batman, but also because they gave him the LAMEST villains to confront! I mean, the first villains he confronts is a pair of twin brother cowboys with six-shooters?! And, they even had a story that related to the JFK assassination, because at the time of the issue's publication, it was during the 30th anniversary of the assassination! Ghoulish...
But, that was why I was willing to go with Bruce Wayne's spine being magically repaired so that I could look forward to "Knightsend".
I will have to think very carefully about these omnibuses.
You and everyone else hated the Knightquest storyline....which is why they rushed Bruce back under the cowl. But not before they gave us prodigal.

Omar, are the Shadow of the Bat issues collected in the correct reading order as you and Kirk discussed about in his custom binds? Just curious. Would you say the omnis are pretty much complete except for the missing Azrael issues at the beginning.
Do you think the new collections that are coming out in tpb are more comprehensive than the old collections but equal to the omnis in content just not format. Don't mean to ask so many questions just trust your opinion on the matter more than most. Thanks, Ray
Hey there. So yes, the Shadow of the Bat issues are finally collected in the correct reading order. However, as I mentioned in this video they freaking left out Sword of Azrael. That is ridiculous that after 20 years of reprinting these stories, they still can't get it right. The new collections are missing part of the story too. So the best we can get are these omnibuses. No need to apologize, I'm here to help. :)

I decided to get these, but i realized vol.3 can't be found anywhere. Am i missing anything? Any big conclusion to the epic saga?

I thought Knightfall was great, but I read it in the paper trade format, wouldn't mind reading it again in the 100 dollar books. But I did like the No man's land storyline a lot more. So how come you kept both versions of knightfall?

Vols 1&2 are still around but vol3 seems like its very hard to get now.

Is volume 3 Knightsend a good payoff and/or ending to the story? Can't find that vol 3 omnibus anywhere.
After Knightsend omni and Kelley Jones' new HC, I think DC will announce No Man's Land omni. It starts right after the last issue in Jones' HC. What do you think?

just seen that Vol 1 is supposedly being reprinted sometime in 2023, only way i'm ever getting any of these omnis is if they change the entire design of the covers and spines, ugliest omnis ever made still to this day.
I hate it when they do that which collection would be best to get the anniversary set or this omnibus set
The anniversary set will be cheaper, but the size will be standard tpb size and it won't contain everything in these omnis.
from what I am seeing the new collection in tpb will have all this and more... just not Sword of Azrale

Yeah, I think it's an anniversary set of three or four trades. They love reprinting these stories.

Good & informative review. I did notice one thing you kept calling Jean Paul Valley's version of Batman "BatAz" that's the opposite I've what I've heard from when the books were on the stand until now. I also heard him called "AzBats".
Most people call him AzBats now. When those books were coming out that whole summer we used to call him BatAz, maybe because we wanted to be edgy teenagers. :) But you are correct, brother. It is AzBats!! Thank you so much for watching and more importantly the compliment.

I brought the paperbacks years ago for my friend. . They do not put Azreal first appearance. Agree covers care not all that So they show how Bruce got healed. . Only thing Valley did was beat up Bane

I absolutely have been loving Tom King's run. I didn't dig the first six issues, but I'm a huge fan of I am Suicide and I am Bane. I can't wait for issue 50. Please don't apologize, because your English writing is great.

It' sad that we'll most likely never get a future superhero comic with a similar or better quality to Knightfall.
I think there have been other stories like No Man's Land, Legacy and even the Detective run on Rebirth was so damn good.
I highly disagree, there have been plenty of superhero comics that have been produced in the last 10 years that completely outclassed Knightfall, just with Batman alone. A lot of Scott Snyder’s Batman work, James Tynion’s Detective Comics run, Peter Tomasi’s current Detective Comics run are all just as good, if not better. From the 2000s, Batman: No Man’s Land, Hush, and Under the Red Hood match it as well.
If you’re talking just at DC, Geoff Johns’ run on Green Lantern easily outclasses this as well.
Hey Omar you're probably aware I collect "The Legend Of Batman" graphic novels collection from Eaglemoss. I received part 39 today which is "Knightfall Prologue". Lo and behold this one includes "Sword Of Azrael" 1-4, plus Batman #488 & Vengeance Of Bane #1. I was concerned about the large double dipping as I own the 3 massive Knightfall trades. However this gives me something I don't have. While I'm interested in how these books will map out, I will keep the trades of course as I suspect they are more complete. I have an impression this series only includes the Batman & Detective Comics issues.

I have the shitty 2000 trades of Knightfall and they're way too choppy and it always rubbed me the wrong way how they omitted the stuff where Bruce actually cures his injury, so Volume 2, he's still searching, and volume 3, he's back, can walk, and is just fine. These editions don't even have any covers or even cover artwork to them either.
I had those same editions. The ones that Mike Deadato Jr. did the covers for. They were horrible!

Does the earlier TPB version include the introduction to Azrael??
The Sword of Azrael has been collected in several trades. The latest being Azrael volume 1. None of the Knightfall trades collect Sword of Azrael.
Next year is the 30th anniversary, hopefully we'll see a reprint with non deformed people on the covers.
Got my set today. I am very disappointed from the cover art. It's terrible and as you mention, the spines look terrible next to each other. Who is approving these things?
One more thing I didn't like is the paper quality, which is not omnibus, i. e. Deluxe level. Other than that, the main storyline I have read before and I like it, but I haven't read a lot of the content collected, so I'm looking forward to read it for the first time.
I hope you enjoy the stories. The other thing I would add to the list of disappointments is the freaking lack of Sword of Azrael!!
Volume 2 has the weakest writing, but the highest ratio of Graham Nolan artwork which makes up for it lol. Nolan and Breyfogle were the best Batman artists of the early 90s, so it bothered me that Jim Aparo got to draw most issues of vol.1/Knightfall proper when his art was past his prime and fairly outdated by the time the 90s rolled around. Not dissing Aparo because he was an important artist for the character in the 70s and 80s, up there with Adams, but by '93 Breyfogle and Nolan were simply better...
Aparo grew on me. Sadly it was right before his death that I appreciated it his art so much more.
Paul I completely agree with your opinion of Nolan/Breyfogle/Aparo. For me Breyfogle is the best though

@@NearMintCondition I myself am not so much of a collector, I just want to beable to enjoy stuff for the stories, sure I have bought a few statues, but I only have a few and those are more for display pieces as part of my decore on my nerd shelf.
Good video, but your reasoning for not liking the spines makes zero sense. Both new and old have small volume numbers, the DC logo consistently in the same areas, and the titles in the same spot and with the same font. Seemed like you were grasping at straws for a complaint there.
Zero sense seems like an absolutist way of thinking. How about at least 25% sense? The logo is fine and the numbers are fine. (believe me I've been collecting collected editions for 15 years and seen my share of screw ups by all companies). The problem is with the art on the spine. There is no uniform. They could have easily made a picture that connects for the spine or even a one color tone with the number like the Teen Titans, Green Lantern, Flash or JSA omnis. These are $100.00 to $150.00 books. When doing and overview I have to look over everything because my viewers want to know if even the smallest thing might push them to pass on a book. That being said... thank God for custom jackets. :)
Yeah i follow you there. When they're that pricey it's ok to demand perfection. I literally just bought all three digital on comixology for $5 each. I also wish they contained sword of Azrael.
I know brother, what the hell?!! How can you skip out on the beginning of the main story arc. One of these days DC will get it right. They've only had this story in collected editions for over 20 years. And hell of a deal for 5 bucks each. That's how I read new comics to see if I even want them in Hardcover eventually. Digitally.

These hard covers have the worst covers and spines I've ever seen of Batman. I have the erlier ones and that 3 hard cover. It would be black. I hate all of that color on spine. Sad...these books deserved a better cover and spine as well.

I'm not sure what you mean? Complaining? Because the collections don't collect the introduction of the character that replaces Batman? I think that's a fair complaint. The purpose of these type of videos is to inform people of what they are getting so they can decide whether to make a purchase on a book retailing for $100.00 or not. That's why I like to cover everything, including the gripes of the things that are missing from the books.
Lol culture difference perhaps and dc did mess up a bit
