Honestly I’ve never read to much Batman comics but after watching this video and seeing the story in review in omnibus format that I thought no video might want to read this now, thanks Gem 💎 😁
I don't have these omnibuses but DC is releasing the same material in 9 trade paperbacks, so that's what I've been reading. I'm probably in the middle of the Knightquest portion, which would be the second omnibus. I'll disagree with you and say that I do like the Knightquest portion so far. It's definitely a step-down from Knightfall. Everything in the prelude to Knightfall and Knightfall portion are great in my opinion, except for the Two-face story, which I don't feel meshes well with the rest of the series at all and maybe it would've been better as a stand-alone Two-face story. I'm not sure. Knightquest is a lot more uneven in the quality of the stories. The Joker film-maker story for whatever reason just didn't work for me, mainly because I couldn't get past the idea that he was working with successful Hollywood staff who went along knowing that someone was actually going to be killed. Just seemed like silver age silliness to me. Maybe if it were an underground snuff film crew or something, or bitter Hollywood rejects I might have bought into it a little more. Other stories might have worked better if they were longer and had more room to breathe. I think that was a major problem with quite a few of the stories I've read up to this point. I did enjoy the Catwoman/eco-terrorist story a lot, though and the Scarecrow story was cool, too. I'm not going to lie: Jean Paul Valley made an interesting Batman substitute to me. Obviously, I'm glad he didn't permanently replace Batman. 8 months worth of issues is enough for him. But the whole point was that he didn't have the mental discipline, the emotional and moral fortitude to be the true Batman the way Bruce Wayne did and that Batman doesn't work as a 90s antihero. With that in mind, I found him to be an engaging character in his own right and enjoyed reading his internal monologues, his struggles against his conditioning and delusions and his gradual descent into madness, despite some things getting a bit repetitive after a while. He's a very complex character here. He has good intentions, but good intentions definitely don't make him a good person. I have not gotten to the Knightquest The Search parts yet. I've heard terrible things about it, but I'm still looking forward to reading it. I used to own the original trades for Knightfall, and it always used to piss me off that in the third one, Batman just comes back and he's healed and can walk again, no explanation and I couldn't understand why DC wouldn't collect the issues that explains how Batman is able to heal a spinal fracture. So, regardless of the quality, I'm glad to have it so I can know for myself how everything played out and of the quality of the story.
Definitely would like this omni collection. This review did it in for me and I'll grab it soon...I need this set, still need to find a copy of the Avengers omni Volume 1 by Hickman, I waited too long .
Gem, I'm a huge batman fan and this saga has to be my all time favorite story of batman..Especially the intro of Azrael...man I love that character Azrael! Especially his yellow and red suit as Azrael and Azrael in that cool batman suit! Bro 90s where my favorite in comics. I'm going to have to hunt these three hard covers down. Thanks for the walk down memory lane. You know what would be dope?! A statue of Azrael (red and yellow suit) or hot toys quality figure. Man I'd pay super top dollars for that! *****oh and I hella enjoyed this story or saga better than the spiderman clone saga...dont get me wrong..I love spiderman!! But this batman saga was and still is off the chain imo.
I just finished the first two omni's last week and cracking the third one open soon. I did enjoy the first volume better than the second and looking forward to reading and completing the third
I love that this story has lasting power. I remember reading and collecting these issues off the stand, and decades later I'm reading and collecting the omnibus (omnibi?) of these stories... Great video. I watched it again because I was curious if you mentioned the book stand here. I picked up one from Barnes but it's not working quite well.
@@187Wretched Look into the story for all 3 Vol. Also the art. Both can be a mix post-Vol 1. There's a ton of other high quality comics out there...spending $150 on all 3 of these may not be worth it to you. Unless diehard batman fan. Could just pick them up used if necessary.
Finished vol 1 a week ago. Easy read. Quick. A bit broad on the tie ins. Aside from the Bane intro, a lot of the first 375 pages very loosely tie IMO. Not really necessary - could’ve done with about 25% of it. Explaining he’s tired and worn down even prior to the Bane gauntlet. But I enjoyed it all the same.
Cheers for the review. I’m thinking of picking up the trade paperback version. 1-3. They are a lot cheaper. Do you know is there much missing from them. Would you think it’s better to inverts in the onnibus. Just at the moment they cost a lot more. The tpb are thick too so I’m hoping would be ok.
This storyline for me was the first real comic run where the story got interesting dark and serious gone was the goofy 80s style drawing and stories that made no sense to me as a kid

I own and have read all three volumes/omni's (for lack of better terms if you will, instead of saying omnibuses) of Geoff Johns GL run and I can say that those are really good and consistent. These Batman omni's are good too but you can find yourself liking one over the other or having that "can't wait to get through this" kind of feeling. But imo these Batman omni's and definitely the GL ones are great to have
Id say Green Lantern. It's the most accessible. Sandman is not for everyone, not sure the type of reader you are. It can be a bit dense and far out there. GL is a stronger run than Batman.

Bane is such a great Villain. Sometimes Hardcore Villain, sometimes Antihero he's a great add to the Batman gallery

The issue that got me hooked was Batman 494 (part 5). The cover with Joker and Scarecrow is awesome. After reading that I had to track down the rest.

Gem, you didn't mention about not in order pages in Volume 2, at least my copy has it. About 4 or 5 pages at the end of Vol. 2. Dropped a like.
Bane was a beast. Better than the Spider Man clone saga. Saga got far fetched

I have never liked this story. Part 1 has a lot of brilliant moments. Once JP Valley comes in, the story loses my interest.
