How-To Bathe Your Rat (2 Rats, 1 wSkin Problems)

  • Today, I did a round of rat baths. After my pet rats have experienced getting a bath for the first time, they usually begin to enjoy it because it's essentially a back massage. And they're always rewarded in the end, either with a rare treat or getting to free roam the entire rat room and not just the playpen. So once they learn that nothing negative is going to happen after their first bath, they are usually pretty chill about it every time afterwards.
    When giving your pet rat a bath for the first time, please be patient and calm. I believe that animals can sense our emotions and if you're feeling frustrated, your pet rat will feel nervous.
    I always wear long sleeves and fabric gloves when bathing my rats to help keep me from getting marked up by their nails. They don't scratch like cats but still, it's uncomfortable.
    It's normal for your pet rat to squirm and wiggle during their first bath. They will quiver with insecurity because they don't know what is going on at first. This is expected. Just stay relaxed and just carefully reposition however necessary to give them their bath.
    It is NOT normal for a pet rat to bite. If you're a breeder and your pet rat bites during their bath, please document this in your rat files for temperament concerns.
    This video is not sponsored so if you're interested in the anti-fungal shampoo I use, please scroll to the last frame in the video.
    I hope you enjoy the video. I enjoyed making it. :)

    Update: I've gotten a couple of comments of concerns about bathing rats, and I wanted to address this from my POV.
    Rats groom themselves all day every day, so as a general rule there's no need to bathe your pet rat.
    However, sometimes a fungal infection will seemingly come out of nowhere and this will not clear up on its own without antifungal treatment. This is what prompted be to do a full round of baths.
    While the first rat in the video had a clear coat, the second rat in this video has noticeable skin problems. As a result, I needed to bathe her with an antifungal shampoo. As a precaution I bathed everyone to prevent any spread if it were something like ringworm. It's been about 6 weeks, and it looks like fur is growing back and the skin is clearing up. So the good news, everyone is doing great.
    There was one comment that I was surprised to read. It recommended providing dust baths. Please Please Please DONT provide dust baths for your pet rats. Rats have a very sensitive respiratory system. A dust bath would be dangerous for them. The only animal that I know that needs a dust bath is a Chinchilla, but NOT rats. Please don't provide a dust bath for your rats. This is bad advice. I'm sorry if someone feels firmly about giving dust baths to rats, but it's not safe.
    At the end of the day, you do what ever you feel is best for you and your pets and I won't say a word or comment negatively on your posts. --With that in mind, I'll do what I perceive is best for me and my pets. I have a strong--You do you, I do me, philosophy.
    Thank you for stopping by.

      Some people are just going to need to have there two pence worth no matter what.
      They have no idea why or what you are doing this for and just believe what they have been told or read somewhere online so please don't worry about people going on with themselves because I believe that the real people who are rat owners and truly love and care for there pet rat's understand why you are doing this and don't care about them keep up the great work of showing people that rat's are the best pet's you can get
      Also you can see that they love having a bath

    Hey! So cute! They look like they're reallu enjoying it.
    For first timers though, remember this isn't necessary unless the rat has something wrong. They clean themselves and too much baths (like any animal) can strip their oils and cause issues down the line 😁 just important to keep in mind in case you didn't know. ❤️ this is too cute though, i understand why rat baths had been trending haha

      Thank you for the feedback. I like meeting other rat enthusiast, like me. I seldom bathe my rats, but I realized recently how dirty their tails were despite how clean their bodies appeared and wanted to take care of that and give them a bath. Also, the second rat in the video has skin problems that needed attention with an antifungal shampoo. Thank you for your visiting and commenting. :)

    My male rat is a biggggg boy. It’s not overweight for his size but his body is maybe 8 inches long. He hates baths (the water scares him) but he’s unfixed and his buck grease is too much. It’s hard to bathe and hold him.

    I have a male PEW rat and he has that orange oil built up on his back. I’ve tried to bathe him because it builds up so bad. Is a problem I need to go to the vet for?

    • @TheCheerioGang
      @TheCheerioGang  Год назад

      I think if you feel concerned about it, you should talk with your vet. It's not my place to say what to do. I have experience with hairless rats and when the buildup was too much, I used a sensitive-skin pet shampoo. It's been a long time since I've had to worry about this, so my thoughts on the topic may be out of date. I'm sorry I can't be of more help.

    • @WinterWerewolf
      @WinterWerewolf Год назад +2

      It's often called buck grease. You can see that on male rats that have overproduction of testosterone. If you pet does not have any other health or behavioural issues you don't have to worry about that. If your rat is aggressive or it causes some other issues you may need to consider neutering the little guy.
