Adam! Truly appreciate the shoutout at the end, thank you 🙏. I've been an Open Studio member and follower for years and have gained so much value from the work you and Peter do so it's high praise indeed to hear those kind words from you. Thank you! 🎹
You are emotionally attuned to music, yet you understand the logic of music theory as well. That's what makes you such a master of what you do. Amazing work!
It sounds good, it's agreeable... but the comment doesn't say anything specific, so they can bot it under every video, and it's inoffensive, so if you don't think about it, you might not even realize it's a bot.
The Fender Rhodes has got to be one of the best modern musical inventions ever.... you sound great and your ad libs are killer! I'm hearing some good song ideas, and I don't even play keys really. Gonna try these progs on guitar. Really hitting my mood right now..... Gotta go back and digest the theory a few more times…
Would be nice if you used a MIDI keyboard tool to display the played notes on a keyboard on screen. Much easier to see what's played than figure out fingerings... Tons of channels use these on YT. Open source possible one: Virtual MIDI Piano Keyboard
17:52 man that Bb7sus sounded so bright and sweet, I love this exercise! I have some piano accompaniment to write this week, can't wait to try these ideas.
Ahhh … yes! What you say is soooo true … we start from going minor … then … later, we suddenly go Major … and it’s like the Sun peeks thru … on a dark cloudy day … Instant Optimism …YAY!!! there is Hope for a better day…( or … the other way around works too …start Major , the get darker like you did here.) This works great in film music too … Thank you very much - Open Studio & … Adam Maness …
Dear Adam, and other Open Studio devotees, can you advise me how you got this fabulous-sounding backing track? It sounded so good. Also, I absolutely loved the mention of the chords that bring about reflections on life choices and looking out of train windows and thinking about high school sweethearts. I laughed with the recognition; there is nothing like delicious, wistful chords . . . Thank you so much for your amazing videos.
This is pretty cool. There is a very beautiful short piece by Ravel called Prelude in A Minor, most of it is in A Dorian, but at one point it goes to G minor 7 and it's very effective. I thought it was just a random thing he came up, with but now I know that he wanted to play a chord from the G, but in A Dorian it would be G Major, but he didn't like that, so he borrowed a G minor 7 from the A phrygian mode. Did I get that right? Do I understand the concept? And you mentioned Clare De Lune. D flat major to F minor to E major. Would you say that the E major was borrowed from D flat Aolian?
2:30 THANK YOU! If it can’t be felt, I mean-what’s the point?! It’s why Jordan Rudess-as talented as he is, annoys me completely. He’s all runs and speed and technicals. He doesn’t move me to listen. Only impresses me with technique. Also, on another note, I really connect with soloists who speak with their instrument complete sentences and don’t just play as many in the passing keys as they can. Like they have to play every note of every passing chord. That’s not improv, that’s note quotas.
It would be nice if you turn that beat down like a lot if you want us to hear these things it's not doing your videos justice when we can't hear what your doing because the beat is louder than the piano
@gilldavidmour4199 yeah. Unfortunately, the intelligibility of the content was fighting with the production. Have you ever been to a movie and could not hear the dialogue because the sound fx were mixed too high, or they weren't unmasked to be heard? These guys are encyclopedias of musical knowledge and the production on this episode got in the way of relating those gems, unlike their usual videos.
@@tonyr.4778 Yeah, I can dig it. I actually think my listening speakers are not balanced L/R very well. Maybe that worked in my favor. And yes, these guys are encyclopedias musical knowledge!
“The Phrygian slaps so hard” is probably one of the best lines I’ve heard in RUclips.
Perhaps the best modal interchange video on the whole internet so far.
No doubt...
For sure

These AI bots are tedious.

How can this kind of content be free??
Seriously?!?
Sooo awesome. Thank you soo much!!
2:43 exactly Adam, music allows us to express things for which no words exist

Got to the second line of the first sheet and just finished a 30 min jam off that simple progression. sounds great
LOL 0:57 sounds like, "all we're gonna be talking about today is calling Adam's high school girlfriend".
You have a good sense of humor...right on!
Thanks!
Mate you are so good at this. Wish you all the success with this channel you really deserve it

That E natural is a ray of sunshine.
Great stuff & compliments the courses I've bought ...keep up the outstanding work !! PS Once I've got vaguely competent I'll look to sign up full time
When you and Peter put up the Attitude Meter it helped! Thank you!
This really is a great guitar lesson for me. Thanks!
I Don't Play Long My Aunt Lusts / Ionian Dorian Phrygian Lydian Mixolydian Aeolian Locrian. Learned in college
Lots of people learn about lust in college.
I'm probably one of the few on here who never heard that before. Thanks, I'm always forgetting the order.
Another is ”I Don’t Play Lydian Mode A Lot” :)
really interesting !! thank you so much for your effort ! im messing around with my guitar while watching your video and im amazed
Thanks Adam! These videos are so much fun to practice too.

I’m so fucking amazed right now. Can you do a video that ties this whole thing into the concept of secondary dominants?
Subscribed, 'nuff said.

Great demo. Turn that backing track way down and those keys way up though.
Great lesson thank you !

Ahh, what was your band?
I hate that I have a favorite key, but I'm glad you're using it for this lesson. 😂
One thing I came to think of, why does it sound so good when jumping up that minor 3rd, but not at all if you jump down a third...?
Yes, thank you so much :)

You lost me aorund 16 mins with the Eb major key from that mode. Like I get that part, but after that, no.
Phrygian = W.I.T. T.C.L.
the tremolo depth is really annoying
Sounded great to me.
I love your videos, but the tremelo on the EP and the volume of the drums made this unlistenable.

Americans are slower than other people, but I still like them.
huh? what does that have to do with anything
As an American, I still don’t understand what you are saying
North or South?
I'm so over this nonsense, trying to impose an "emotional language" on notes.. it's ridiculous
You must be heartless then, or extremely far away from music
