I get on myself about my weight, probably less than other large women, but regularly anyway. Then I see Rosemary, and I remember that some of the most fabulous women on earth are great big loud women who love food, and drink, and laughter. When I think about it, my friends see me the way I see Rosemary, and I'll take that any day.
She glides along like a battleship lovely to all though woe betide anyone who gets in her way. Seeing her reminds me of the time when the British soldiers were becoming decadent and lazy in India in the 18th century dressing in silks, smoking and running around after ladies. To put an end to the situation the leaders of the time send a ship load of British women over to deal with the situation I just imagine the collected soldiers faces on discovering a ship load of rosemary's had turned up at the dock all foolishness would have ended immediately.
Rosemary is fabulous ! I would much rather have dinner & drinks with her than with some skinny, uptight lizard lady ( that's what I call them in my home town of New York City). She's all about fun and she's talented.

It takes a queen to see a room as opulent as that and say what the exquisite artwork on the ceiling needs is to be covered in gold. This series really lets you see how far she moved on from the typical story of her being the plain young girl brought up under the strict discipline of her overbearing mother.
This is so ABSOLUTELY INTERESTING!!! I could look at this all day. One can not imagine how much work had to br done for ONE MEAL!!! With so many coarses!!! *I LOVE THESE EPISODES!!!* ❤ THANK YOU!!
I wish there was a restaurant that recreated these foods/meals. I assume it would be fairly pricey, but I would definitely make it a tradition to have a full menu with family and friends at least once a year! Of course, I suppose that with Covid wracking the world restaurant industry, any thought of that happening is but a pipe dream. Oh, well. First World problems, eh?
Lovely food, sad that Isen glass split. Oh an when Queen Victoria was around, they didnt use Russian isenglass but English isenglass which made from the swim bladder of cod because it was cheaper and easier to get hold of.
I couldn't agree more. I'm no fan of the concept of monarchy, but I am very interested in its day-to-day stories. I would also love to see a similar series done on the general population of the time. Perhaps following the locations in this series. What people ate, their households and lifestyles over the British classes. No _baverois de chocolat au surprise_ for the humble peasants, I'll be bound.
I'm sure they did - I was wondering about this and wishing I could hear that part of the story, as well - the aftermath. I suppose investing in impressing the queen was worth it, in a way. It certainly solidified your place in society for generations and brought associations which could be to your benefit.
There is no doubt that a visit like this would have created debt! That did not matter - money was a renewable resource. The operative words were: we've got one chance to do it correctly. Planning would have probably involved a leadtime of 15 to 18 months.
Admittedly not all estates got them self's in debt but those might very well have been accumulating wealth ever since the last monarchs visit started centuries of favor.
Their accents make me giggle it just makes everything seem so Posh and so very very English and quite entertaining especially when he used the word splendiferous.
English Heritage are in the process of launching a book called how to cook the Victorian way they have a channel on here where an actress plays a Victorian stately home cook and shows how to make recipes from the cooks original recipe book.
The bed spread is more than likely a reproduction then, when you put it that way. Probably not safe to leave old Arsenic bed sheets around. Especially if it’s open to the public. Imagine though, Victoria and Albert sleeping on arsenic bed sheets. What a funny thought!
I'm not convinced they really enjoyed that chocolate jello, made out of sturgeon bladder. Had it been "quite splendiferous", show me with more than 1 small bite.
He never said If he actually liked the tart or not. Compared to other shows where raves about the food, like the raised venison pie, this is a lighter response to the food. Love these hosts. They are so enthusiastic.
The Eisenglass/Isinglass made from fish bladder - like to point out that that bladder is the sturgeons SWIM bladder. And not some "other" bladder like the host seems to hint at.
The funny thing is, many of the foods that we find common nowadays were once the purview of the rich, while many of the foods that we now deem more “upper class” were once viewed as unabashedly common. Mass production has led to our concept of food completely reversing from what it once was.
Eric Connine Salmon too! And soft, white bread was reserved for only the wealthiest monarchs and aristocrats! Wonder Bread, had it existed then, would have been served to kings alone lol! Now the wealthy head off to Whole Foods and choose the grittiest brown breads they can find - something that, for most of history, would have been peasant food only! Jellos and jellies were also considered posh foods - now considered cheap, tacky desserts and snacks. What else? Ah, chicken! Prior to factory farming, chicken was thought of as an extremely upper class meat. Not even a century ago (factory farming began around midway through the last century), chicken was still viewed as a delicacy, to only be eaten on special occasions (or only regularly by the inordinately rich). It truly is funny (albeit, sad, in the case of chicken) how mass production has changed our concept of these things.
Great question! If there was any, it'd be imported from the north in insulated spaces. That could make a perhaps primitive fridge then. The issue is it was not very efficient and often a little too difficult to upkeep.
Reading facts about Queen Victoria, the child she disliked was Bertie. Watching the movies, it seems like after the Queen became a widow, Bertie was such a pompous control freak! Him and the other children judged Queen Victoria when she befriended the Indian dinner server who became her best friend. Why do children try to control their parents?! I can only think that they were preoccupied with their inheritance that they did not help build.
10:30 that colour scheme is awful! Gold/yellow marble columns and drapes, blue doors, grey walls and white accents? Then to top it off chairs with red cushions?! If someone did this to my castle I'd have them beheaded. The only thing that fits the room are the flowers and I'm 90% sure the decorator didn't put those there.

Although if I was a chef or well known among my peers for being a great pudding maker, I might have a small collection just to admire. Maybe even use! Did you see the Victorian gelatin episode? Same thing with the pastry/game meat forms (I’ve can’t recall the name of that Victorian dish).
