A lot of people are asking about UV damage to the cards. A few important notes: - I'm installing blinds to keep drawn during the day...BIG miss by me not to mention that - BCW magnetic one touch holders are UV resistant - PSA slabs and other graded slabs are NOT...so that's important to know - Autographs can and will fade with prolonged sun exposure - The sunlight is almost entirely indirect based on how my house is situated and the window facing the north - Nevertheless, the blinds will help ensure the cards don't fade with time! Thanks everyone for watching!
You are a Hobby Superstar T-Pott! Thanks for the multitude of organizational tips! Love the Meguiar's Scratch-X idea on slabs and 1 touches! The Card Hotel is also very cool! And I am going to start using Blue Painters Tape a lot more for box labelling, etc. Did I see Duct tape in the shoebox bottom at the 10:26 mark? Hmmm. I rarely throw common cards away though. I put 20 assorted mixed sport and TCG common cards in a team bag, and give them out a Halloween, or donate them to local youth hockey and baseball tournaments. The parents add them to the "SWAG" bags that are given out to each kid, with extras given to the siblings. Everyone loves them, and I have orders for more grab bags all the time. My local card shops often donate their commons to my cause. I also prefer the BCW sorting trays, as they feature 25 different trays of varying depths! Such a time saver. And yes.. even indirect UV sunlight will fade most autographs over time. I have sadly learned that the hard way.
Love the office/man cave!! I need to get me some acrylic shelves and command strips!! Also, would love to see a future video on your collection...especially your Drummond PC 😮
Awesome video, perfect time to put out an organization video as the new year approaches. Love the displays, visually stunning. Organization is My most difficult thing to do, and I appreciate you taking the time to put this video together.
Love this kind of content, very useful! I have a similar intake process when I receive slabs in the mail. Firstly I have a spreadsheet where I catalogue all of my PC cards. After cataloguing the card I always take it out of whatever sleeve the seller sold me the card in, wipe any smudges or fingerprints off the slab itself, then sleeve it up in a brand-new graded card sleeve and file it away in its corresponding storage box.
Thank you for this video. I have the same problem as most collectors. I do the hunt get them look over the card then into a box. I just started a month ago and I have a stack of cards all over the place. That does not include the free boxes I received from family members. in total I think I have about 10K of cards that I just started to look over. The hardest part for me is keeping track of all the cards and different kind of cards. Trying the excel way and man that's burning me out already from typing everything out .. But you gave me some good ideas . Keep up the great work as well.
Great video Teapot one thing I do on my intake step is add what I paid in total for the card either on a spreadsheet or add the card on to the PSA set registry that lets you enter your card costs.
I live by myself and live in a apartment with no storage I've got 38,000-40,000 cards I've got mine in binders and they are in teams for my sports cards but every year around this time of the year I start counting my cards then put them in boxes then back into binders .I've decided that every time I get cards I'm going to add those counts to my original count .I'm 53 years old and will collect until it's my time I've got thousands of raw cards worth money that could go to a graded company and make much more money I just don't have the money to send them
Excellent advice. Having an intake system makes it more enjoyable to work with new cards. I also recommend not keeping them stacked loose and too high or near the edge of the desk to prevent the inevitable mistake/damage. I also spend a bit of time updating a database on intake, which has turned into my own price guide. I constantly sort/search this information to make better decisions on future purchases.
The biggest gem of information I got from this video was the Meguir ScratchX for cleaning scratches off slabs! I was getting ready to send my favorite cards in for fresh slabs, but instead I just used the ScratchX and my slabs are looking amazing!
The best thing I ever did to display my HOF cards is two things. I bought: 1) Ringless top loader binders 18:29 2) Wall display boxes Everything else is broken down into: Auto boxes by sport Numbered by sport Non numbered, nono auto by sport Commons - give away. That's it. Nice Barry Sanders (THE GOAT) on your wall, by the way. Him and Jerry Rice are my pc. I have lots of cards from each but not a single auto or numbered auto of either. Hoping I can at least afford to buy one numbered auto of each to display one day.
I use several of the sports card wall display frames, they hold 20 raw cards each and can be found at your local hobby or craft store. I also use foam boards and cork boards to display raw cards in pro mold mini snap holders or one-touch holders using 3M removable mounting squares to attach to the boards.
I absolutely love binders for my collection too, but it seems like not as many people enjoy pages as much anymore. Have you checked out the pages by Legendary Protectors? Those are really good about keeping dings off cards. Great video about collections for beginners. I still watch these videos and seemingly learn something new each one I watch. Even one tiny tweak to your skills makes a huge difference.
This was all fantastic, thank you for the behind the scenes, much appreciated. I do think I would need something a little more substantial for the walls. I use specific earthquake hooks for artwork around my house, I'll have to research options for card displays as well. It's a reality here. Finally, at 13:30, T-Pott doing the lord's work tellin' y'all to use Painter's Tape. A-MEN ... preach! If people would stop using scotch tape on top loaders, the world would be a better place.
Excellent, yeah another big challenge of collecting, besides the cost of cards, is the organizing (sorting, storing , and display) which is actually a BIG part of the hobby and a part I personally really enjoy. Thanks for the great video.
What an insightful video…thank you! What do you do with like $1 bin cards. Do you topload them or just penny sleeve and file away with other raw cards of like HOFers and base RCs and parallels/inserts? I always have a hard time organizing these as I like to rip and it eventually takes up too much space even when throwing out mostly all base cards.
Actually...yes! And no joke...I buy them in bulk from CardsHQ. They very often run the SUPPLIES coupon at checkout on their website for 10% off and already have the best supplies prices I have found. That's no shill...just where I really buy mine! In terms of wholesale prices, a little harder to find.
only thing I would add is that I use all the extra base or junk wax and I use it for PWE or add 10-20 in a random order of a graded card and get so much feedback how much they love looking though them..
This was an awesome video - we always focus on the dopamine hit of opening that package but the hobby would be in a lot healthier spot if folks took this video to heart and got joy out of the cards already in their possession. Wouldn't shock me if Topps saw content like this as a threat to wax! I can only wonder what would happen to the price of wax if more people did this....
Can you share the model of the cabinet? You’re scoring everything in that you said was from IKEA? Also, thank you for the video. It’s very helpful, love it.
T-Pot, always good information delivered in a clear way... But you didn't answer the MOST important question of them all. How to you get your wife to go along with all of this? Lol. I know for you its a business, but for the rest of us ;)
Thank you so much for this..i got so many great ideas....i rip too much wax, but i have some ideas based on this. I mostly do baseball and its sortrd by team. I like.yhr intake system
So much invested in organising and protection, but still uses a ring binder that could potentially damage the cards... Best is to upgrade that to regular binders if you want to keep them all in mint contition over the years.
It's only a problem if you're not careful to lay the pages flat and store it properly. I have been moving several collections to ringless binders, but the major downside is that those pages can't be moved if you need to re-arrange.

I do not like painters tape, I have found in the South Florida heat it gets sticky like masking tape and leaves residue on the top loaders when I receive them. please dont use quarter round to trim that cabinet to the wall, lol. i see you removed the baseboard to get it up tight and thats a smart move. scribe mold is the way to go to cover that gap and it looks top notch. just use some base white cabinet toe kick to get the base to the wall so the baseboard has a place to dead end when its time to put back. its already looking nice just need those last final touches.
Hey brother how do I find the acreclic shelfs? What do I type in? And did you drill those in or just use the command strips? God bless you, Jesus loves you, James
I know some people do, especially with autos. And autos can and will definitely fade over time. I'm monitoring it, but the one touches are rated for like 98% UV protection for 5 years. I also don't have any direct sunlight really coming through the window. The angles are tough with the way my house is situated, so it's mostly indirect coming through.
What specific penny sleeves and top loaders do you recommend for 75pt cards, like National Treasures? I've bought ultra pro penny sleeves for "thick cards" and BCW top loaders for 75 point cards, and the penny sleeves are too big for the 75 point top loaders.
If it's junk wax era I just take out the Hall of famers and throw the rest of the commons away. I just came to that conclusion about a month ago. No point in taking up space
I did that while we’re all at home in 2020-21. What a ride down memory lane. Sent some off to PSA for grading and kept ones that meant something, like the 88 Topps baseball set, the first I put together as a kid. Should have seen the trash can afterwards though.
@MarketMovers I guess technically not all of my keepers are HOFers... that Bo Jackson "Future Stars" is one heckuva card to keep after pulling it out of a junk box.
