I remember watching this performance. It was amazing! Breathtaking. In awe of his talent & vocal range. But when Smokey Robinson a legend in music & the man who wrote the song - that’s his song - his work - his creation - when he stood up... & clapped. That kind of recognition from one artist to another is the one of the highest points you’ll reach. Bravo Adam you are truly gifted.
I gotta wonder what was going through Adam's head when he saw a legend like Smokey Robinson give him a standing ovation for a performance of one of his songs.
I loved all of Adam's performances, but this just showed how he can do it all. Bring things down when needed. I also had never thought deeply on the lyrics until he sang this version. I know now how whatever is going on in your life can really affect your appearance. If you look deeply at a person you can read their story on their face. Especially broken hearts. You can see the tracks of personal experiences.
Adam sang this song the night I got home from the hospital, when my son died. To this day, it is the most beautiful rendition of this song I've ever heard. And still, it induces sobs from me & brings me back to that exact time. I thank the good Lord for the memories I have of him; they serve as reminders of my beloved son's short existence in this world & the infinite wisdom I gained from my experiences with him. Nonetheless, ouch. ❤
Smokey got up first! He loved the interpretation pf his song & he had been listening to many different versions (including him) of this song. Adam delivered a masterpiece. The fact that he didn't win that year shows how bigorty clouds & confuses people to REAL talent & innovation.
This was without a doubt the greatest performance of that shows history, I remember watching it and in the middle of it just knowing this was going to be one of the great moments in TV history.
No matter how many times I watch this particular performance it keeps drawing me in every time. I find myself holding my breath towards the end - it's so captivating.
jessica morris yes he lost because he’s gay but I don’t believe it was the voters decision. He didn’t come out as gay until after the show. Also, despite being robbed, he’s doing far better as the front man of Queen!
He actually reminded me of Elvis, especially in that suit 😀 - I remember this episode. I was stunned with his transformation. Everything about this performance was beautiful, and I've been a fan ever since. 👏 🎶 👍
Looking back, I can't help but feel like the line "Outside I'm masquerading, inside, my hope is fading." carried a second meaning for Adam as he had to hide a large part of his identity from the public. An AI legend who has deserved every opportunity he has had since the show and performed them all with aplomb.
This is my favourite performance of his. When I think of this song, it's always his version that comes to mind... his choice of notes, the pain that comes through, just SO incredibly beautiful.

Radio is a wasteland of really bad music ... I don't even bother to turn it on anymore. Thank goodness for other devises that I can listen to ADAM on or my world would have no music in it!! Actually "Whataya Want From Me", one of my favorite songs, by anyone, was a top U.S. Billboard Top #10 single and #2 single on the U.S. Billboard Adult charts. That's nothing to discount Lol. It also sold over 2 million copies. He's had some other success. But I LOVE that song. Who knows why people fade from mainstream, but you're right--you can't deny that voice. If you haven't seen his tribute to Cher, at the recent Kennedy Center Honors performance, a few days ago, you're missing out on a treat. It's on RUclips, and thankfully he's still got that golden voice! 👏👍
When he didn't win, I stop watching AI. Was disgusted with blatant fix. Then I thought: every cloud has a silver lining. He would be tied down with AI contract and suffocate. With 2nd place he spread his wings!
