I don't see how we would have foldables close to 16:9 that are also bigger than regular phones without being too big. A more square form factor allows you to have the virtual keyboard on the bottom without removing much of the app you're looking at. Split screen would also be better on a squarish form factor as you would get two apps close to native rez a bit like what tablets do.

If the purpose of a foldable phone is to be more productive, then Microsoft had the best formula! Playing a video on a folded duo 2 is pretty much the same size as the video on these foldables. It is sad that the duo didn't get the push it needed to overcome the bad press.

I was a Z Fold 5 user. I hated the aspect ratios of both displays. Nothing felt made for either of the screens and it felt bad. Every app felt stretched, cropped, or both. The only time some apps felt 'normal' was when the fold was open, in landscape, and I was using split screen apps (which happens to then be in the same orientation as the Pixel Fold). Even then, a handful of apps noticed I was in landscape orientation and would freak out, not displaying things correctly. Despite it being the 5th generation of the foldable, it sometimes felt like I got access to an early release of the software. The hardware was excellent though. Battery life was good, flagship processor kept up with multitasking no problem, and even the cameras were good enough. The aspect ratios, and software problems/workarounds created by those aspect ratios, are what slowly killed my enjoyment of the device the more I used it as my daily driver.

I got a pixel fold to replace my fold 3, and it's been great, but it really makes me yearn for my OG surface duo. Maybe I'll look for a cheap duo 2 as a side device. All that being said, the pixel is great hardware, but the software I think is lacking, especially when compared to the Samsung line, though they've had a lot of generations to get it right.

I do think that the "best" foldable shape would be a regular 4:3 tablet that folds into an ipod nano shaped thing, with a 4" ticker display and a camera ring in place of the wheel.
Then again, I am more into phablets myself and I hope huge phones make a comeback

  • @FAT8893
    @FAT8893 3 месяца назад

3:34 Same for me. Left the foldable phone bandwagon for dual display solution, and it turned out to be the best decision I've ever made. One notable difference between the two is split screen support. Contrary to what most people think, there are still lots of apps that doesn't natively support split screen. Netflix, NHK WORLD-JAPAN, and e-commerce apps are prime examples to it. I have no such problem when using my LG V50's Dual Screen case at all.
And another thing: There are still a lot of apps that aren't well optimized for larger screens, be it foldables or tablets or even Desktop Mode. I always use Screen+ Desktop Mode from my V50, and it's easy to see which app cannot be maximized to full screen.

Personally having a mini tablet isn't that helpful to me because I'll just use a full tablet since the aspect ratios seem odd...

Juan nothing beat the ease of use for multitasking of the surface duo. The way it treats each screen as it's own and defaults the app into the 1single screen is so productive. I had the duo 1 & 2 since launch. I have since moved to pixel fold and hardly ever use the inside screen except when I consume content and on occasion for banking. No where near as easy to run 2 apps side by side. The ultimate phone would be the form factor of the pixel fold, the software behavior of the DUO and the internals of the open... There is still a ton of space for improvement and innovation with foldables...

I guess my bestest form factor would be something like the fold though, I'm not sure about squareish form factors, they seem awkward both for a lot of apps and media.
Though the most likely outcome right now is I'll get a smallish tablet for media at 1/5th of the price of a new fold:-)

I use the z flip 5 most of the time because of how easily it fits my pocket. When i had the surface duo, i loved using it to multitask with its true dual screens. Plus, Samsung software for multitasking on the Fold is superior, the Oneplus Open comes close but not quite. I just wish the would give us DeX for the inner screen.

I just can't figure out why I would want a foldable phone. I do still kick myself a little for not snapping up a used Surface Duo a year or so ago when I saw one, just for the novelty of it, but really, I get everything I want to do on a small screen with an autoincorrecting keyboard with my Pixel 7 Pro or now my S24 Ultra. I've just started playing with DeX on the S24U and am trying to decide if I want to take the plunge into the portable monitor world and try vacationing without hauling a laptop along, just my phone ... and a monitor ... and a keyboard and mouse. Okay, so I wouldn't gain that much except spending a day updating Windows on my laptop, which generally only sees the light of day when I'm on vacation. LOL But I'm starting to lean that way. And I mostly blame YOU for putting those ideas in my head. :P Maybe just a Nexdock ...

Waiting for Microsoft to get off their butts and offer a Microsoft Launcher for folding phones. If they're abandoning the Surface Duo hardware completely, there shouldn't be a reason not to continue development of their Android Launcher for those who are use to this ui already and are well integrated into the Microsoft ecosystem. Fork the UI as the DUO Launcher if they can't rewrite their current single display launcher.

For me, I prefer the phone that opens into a mini tablet simply because the Flip style just doesn't really provide anything a regular slab style doesn't, apart from the ability to prob it up, which a kickstand case can sort of do. Having used the S24 Ultra over the last few weeks, my Folds are all tucked away. The fact that the aspect ratio doesn't provide more real estate for video consumption is something that bugs me a bit. The Pixel Fold is the closest to being a regular style phone that, when opened, provides an aspect ratio that minimal amount of the display is wasted on black bars, but then the speaker placement is a bit weird. Z Fold requires roating sizedways and then the speakers are on the sides, but comparing the screen space that is showing video vs my S24U, they both are a l almost identical. Unless there's a foldable that can get longer and wide to maintain a closer to 16:9 when opened and closed, this "problem" is something that will remain. The main difference between Google's and Samsung's Folds is when you need to rotate them. Google's solution has me roatating less often, but I find myself using the cover display so much, I might as well not have a Fold. Samsung's is kind of the opposite. I've yet to try the Duo but LG with the Velvet was one of my favorite devices. One screen, when I needed that and second screen, when I needed to run two apps at once. I've found myself enjoying a larger phone and a tablet vs a Fold, lately. The price is about the same. But, out of the Foldables, Samsung wins simply on software, for me. Edge panel, taskbar, that's always there, DEX, customization, separate home screen on cover vs opened and speakers that face to the sides when in landscape orientation opned. I need to try the OnePlus Open, eventually. From what I've seen, their software as far as for multitasking is exceptional. Vivo needs to allow more apps to do stacked split screen and they'll be right up their with Samsung's, for me.

Good questions. Nice job. To view this post, I just did screen cast from my new OnePlus 12. Yesterday my OnePlus 8T once again deleted all of its desktop icons after trying the screen share. But today the TV screen flickered a bit and eventually lost connection. I lust after Samsung Dex but don't like the prices. Motorola is here in Denmark but I don't have the courage to go that way despite their fantastic desktop abilities.
Foldables have me leaning the split screen double screen way like lg and duet but they would have to gain traction from zero after maybe the Lenovo laptop shows people how useful it is but I doubt people will realize "what's good for them". Sigh.
A soft bendable screen that in my book needs a stylus is an oxymoron.
I'm gonna go try share to windows and Screen cast to windows to see how that works. (Max 30 fps if I remember correctly). I'm looking forward to your coverage of sharing to windows that you hinted at.
