  • There's no question that we're living in tough times-and tough times demand a tough faith. A certain measure of faith can be found just about everywhere, but not all faith stands up to a fact-check. When we face difficulties in our Christian walk, we need to recall the facts that support our faith, and remember that "all things work together for good to those who love God" (Romans 8:28). Whatever facts you may be facing, when you invite God's truth into the situation, you will find peace.
This teaching is from our series Fact-Check with Skip Heitzig from Calvary Church.

    Dear Pastor Heitzig
I greatly appreciate your explanation of the description of faith with the word "substance" in verse 1.
I also enjoyed the rest of your clear and encouraging message.
But when you gave the gospel invitation I was really disappointed.
I know it's become usual to urge unbelievers to give their lives to Christ, commit to Him as their Lord, turn from their sins, ask Him into their hearts and similar. But as I have come to understand how to be saved from Scripture, I don't see any of these things.
Instead, the gospel of John records our Lord promising forgiveness, eternal life and eternal security to anyone who will simply believe in Him (rely or depend on or lean our full weight on Him, like the beautiful illustration of the missionary in his chair that you gave) for salvation from hell. Key passages in John and the other New Testament writings are:
    John 1:12-13, John 3:14-18, 36, John 5:24, John 6:27-29, 40, 47, John 10:25-30, John 11:24-26, John 12:32-36, John 20:31, Acts 16:30-31, Romans 3:21-28, Romans 4:24-25, Romans 5:1-2, Galatians 2:16, Galatians 3:2, 14, 26, Ephesians 2:8-9.
More important than our faith, which is simply a vehicle by which we receive salvation from God's righteous wrath in the lake of fire, is God's grace. Because of His grace, salvation is possible. Because of the incredible sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross for guilty and sin-sick humanity, we, as we simply trust in what He did for each of us personally, receive blessings upon blessings that we certainly don't deserve and could never merit, starting with our justification.
My point, and forgive me for being long winded, is that the focus on presenting the gospel rightly belongs to God the Son and the grace of the Father. Not on us. If we think that anything we do in response to the simple gospel that Christ died for our sins, was buried and rose again (1 Corinthians 15:1-5) carries some weight, then salvation is no longer purely a free gift of God available to us by His grace. Now it depends on what I do. My commitment, my prayer, my asking, my turning, my confessing, my forsaking, etc.
And Ephesians 2:8-9 is absolutely clear that it is purely by grace that we receive the free gift of salvation. Anytime else gives room for us to boast. Grace plus anything we do does not save. It's grace alone through faith alone in Christ Jesus's substitutionary death for us alone.

Faith lift vs face lift. Both are elective but one trims off skin the other “trims off “sin lol
