Not all of the english soldiers were in fact English. Cameron was struggling to raise an army so had travelled to Melbourne and called for Volunteers. Two of my GGGgrandfathers joined up , and they were both Prussians !. One had been a regualr Prussian soldier back in what was to become the Polish Corridor and the other was a son of a Prussian Soldier who had fought against napoleon. One other was an English man who had been in the China service around 1840. He had married a Maori woman who had died young, but during this marriage he had learned to speak fluent Maori .Cameron used his skills an an interpreter promoting him to the rank of Sargent. This use of volunteers was probably caused the loss when they were faced with real Warriors .

      so curious about this.
What kind of condition were they in?
Where in relation to the pa were they found?
extremely unusual for soldiers to abandon weapons

It's time NZ started teaching the Māori Land wars and racist policies to future students going through the school system.

My Faulkner whanau watched the battle unfold from their property. And the British confiscated my Maori families land

The last Faulkner I saw was Martha when I was a kid. Because we are the Tupaea Ainsley Smith Faulkner Jacobs Murray Leef group we were always at all the old peoples tangi's and I soaked up everything....I was the only young one there...and only boy....so it was full of grit as I was carried back and forth by my mother. No racism but lots of drink and drugs and good times. I'm into my 70's now and have it all recorded in my own manifesto....no publishment yet.......may not be accepted. ZOh well. By the way I remember their horse winning on tv years later and our family got together to back it. Te Huianui was the name 10 to 1 it paid. The whanaunga pulled a few hundred thousand that day. I was about 10 then and Glyn Tucker mentioned George had passed away and Aunty Martha would train them. We were the whanau that owned Motiti that Hori Tupaea sold to the other Faulkners from Australia to establish the NZ thoroughbred register. My other GG who was the farrier for the King or Royal Artillery was also in attendance.

Utter disgrace how the Māori were treated. Aotearoa is Māori land.
