People were expecting a SwSh style Pokemon DP remake, not a terrible conversion of DS game onto modern hardware (An "HD2D" approach would have fared better if they wanted to go this route, I'd argue).

I think part of the reason Pokémon’s battle system is so excellent is because of how simple single-battles are (at least at the game level, I know competitive singles gets pretty complex), and how much depth double-battles have. VGC is fascinating and exciting to watch.

At some point my sister let me play Violet on her switch and I loved it to death, especially with the ending and its music. It caused me to go and emulate emerald, soulsilver, platinum, and black 1 and 2 so I can experience what my childhood couldve been like if my parents actually bought me Pokemon games instead of just putting it on the TV and buying merch. usually I’ll obsess over some kind of media for a month and it’ll disappear, but Pokemon has lasted for almost a year now. Another big reason for people not stopping playing these games, it basic psychological attamchment. It's not only about "nostalgia", it's about a safe space, stability (in an ever changing world) and about a rare franchise which keeps growing (with us), but also has a large variety to be enjoyed (Games, TCG, Anime).
Not to mention, that the franchise just sparks with creativity and is one of the most inclusive franchieses, which is why the LGBTQIA+ community and so many neurodivergent people are drawn to it.
I could state even more psychological factors, but the gist of it is that we're attached to Pokémon for FAR bigger reasons than meets the eye. Going even deeper into themes like "compensation", "self-development through fiction", "moral development", "Dopamine regulation" and even "co-dependency" or "addiction". It really is a fun and giant topic to be talked about, which - logically - does the things to our human brain it does 😄

So all I'll say is we should stop giving Pokémon Company our money so they have an actual reason to make their games BETTER, given that they do have the resources and even MORE MONEY than the actual NINTENDO Company to do so...oh and make them give GameFreak MORE time to finish said games, not hurry them on a deadset early release because that is the cancer of any videogame...always full of bugs and many other issues for hurrying a deadline. It truly isn't the developers fault when they are doing their best under such a dumb short period of time.

Pokemon is a home to me. I love it with all my heart and it's a part of my daily routine and personality. Whether it's games, anime, cards, spinoffs or whatever else, I'd gladly enjoy it. It was the case 9 years ago, it is the case today.
All the criticism is absolutely valid, in fact, I'm not ashamed to admit many of the flaws those games have, though it got much more difficult to engage with community when there will always be THAT person or group of people to hate on you because you're allegedly not supposed to enjoy those games by their opinion.
And hey, SwordShield and ScarletViolet is still cozy and fan games, the Legends format was really a great surprise to me and I really think the game us great and Legends Z-A is super promising! So, maybe the games are not as good as we'd want them to be but it's just good enough to keep us excited I guess!
And, no, I'm not playing ONLY Pokemon games, I enjoy many other great Nintendo, PlayStation and crossplatform games that are better than Pokemon by a mile, so it's not having "low standards" or "not being exposed to good games", it's a lot more than that.

Reminiscing back to the days of running around your neighborhood with your friends with a Pokeball and a DS in hand, exploring the wooded areas near you like you were going through Veridian Forest, and talking as if you were a trainer yourself. I think that’s the pure magic of Pokemon… allowing you to interact with the world in wonder and awe - seeing the world in all its beauty and grace.
While I was extremely disappointed in Scarlet and Violet (I think they’re unequivocally the worst games in the series) I still find myself going back to this franchise and playing the old games to relive that magic and wonder. That’s the key of Pokemon.

Real reason is because pokemon somehow has better rpg mechanics than most games. Similar to Yu-Gi-Oh.
Defense(shield) units in Pokemon get a move that works off that.
Exception to rules with freeze dry to do damage against water types.
Let you play a customized adventure with any unit(pokemon) you want giving it high replayability
Most rpg I've played can't hit every note even at their best. Dragon quest 3 was almost there but like most games they lack many key uses.

It has a solid foundation, but I’d love to see more iterations beyond flashy gimmicks that only last for 1 generation anyway.
Also, and it’s a big one: they need to stop treating us like we’re stupid. When we fight gym leaders, I want them to actually have a strategy that I have to play against, not “oh I’m the X-type gym leader so I use X-type Pokémon, and you will sweep if you have even 1 Pokémon I’m weak to”.

    • @ivanbluecool
      @ivanbluecool 11 дней назад +2

@Scuuurbs yeah the older gens are very badly designed. They did do some weather teams but honestly they could make the gyms have 4 moves and coverage at least. It's easy mode as they have better mons but a challenge is what is fun.

Shin megami tensei has the best monster customisation. It blows Pokemon out of the water. With Pokemon you have to breed and waste a bunch of time hatching eggs to get Pokemon with insane moves. But in SMT just fuse the demons together and inherit their skills to create powerful monsters without wasting time.

THIS IS THE REALEST VIDEO EVER MADE. For years I've been in this back and forth between my love for the pocket monsters until one day I deducted that despite the horrendous stumbles and disappointing factors such as those disappointing graphics and in SV, I will always love it. Pokemon is a series where if you play 1 game to completion, even if you no longer play the games anymore, you will always love the media and the franchise. It's not only one of the biggest franchises in the world, making it inescapable, but it also holds such powerful childhood memories with such likeable and loveable creatures. Despite my attempts to constantly push the series aside, that nostalgic feeling that was embedded into me after playing BW has taught me that whether I like it or not, I am a Pokemon trainer until the day I die, for it is apart of me unlike anything else.

This video was put together so well!
There's a number of things I like and dislike about the series. One thing I have to give them credit for is their designs. It's not for everyone, but I'd argue each monster had an idea in mind and likely went through several revisions to get it to where it is now. Some other monster series feel like they went with the first draft in the design department.

    • @JoeKGamingEssays
      @JoeKGamingEssays  11 дней назад

Thank you for the kind words!
And yea for the designs I agree. But like, when I compare pokemon games to other games there is ALWAYS at least 10-30 designs per gen that I like a good amount. And 3-5 that I love.
I think the newer gens have a lot more stinkers but also... a lot of the more basic ideas have beend one before and they want pokemon to be unique so its kinda a hard design place to be in im sure.
I thought about this yesterday but if pokemon were REALLY running out of ideas they could make like, A Zebra for EVERY mono type, and then EVERY mixed type and instantly create so many mons. They would be the laziest thing ever but it would work I guess. So anyways... Im glad they arent that lazy I guess haha

  • @SophieSquid

I clicked this video as someone who has already resigned myself from the franchise, so I was curious what you'd have to say. I can admit, it's gonna be hard to not pick up the next generation, and I might cave again like I did with S/V. I wasn't going to get the game, I hardly even cared, then bought it impulsively knowing I had basically avoided all spoilers towards pokemon designs and whatnot and that if I didn't hop on board everyone else would start talking about it. There's a bit of fomo involved in my experience, I have no way of knowing if I'll hit the same thing next year when they inevitably announce gen 10 two years earlier than they're ready to, but who knows. I'm at the very least planning to not buy it day one, but that could change. Legends ZA has been on my radar cause I actually really love the legends spinoff series but I will probably wait till it comes out and see what it's like before buying.
Honestly, I think the main reason people still buy the games is the hardcores have to, but even the more casual fans or even those who are somewhat removed from the franchise find it won't hurt to pick up one new game every 3 years. It's not a massive commitment. A year ago I woulda said no exceptions I'm not buying the new game. I even boycotted buying the dlc to sv cause I bought the dlc for swsh and never finished it cause I lost interest and didn't wanna perpetuate the issue of mindless buying, but there's story I've missed out on that I do kinda wish I could play. It's honestly complicated, even as someone who doesn't care for pokemon all that much, it's just nice to come back to it every once in a while. My replacement franchise, digimon, has the issue of not really having that many good digimon games, and thus it doesn't fill the void of personally going thru the world and discovering new creatures.

As far as the drama over quality goes, I think it helps that none of those bugs are gamebreaking (usually), and they were a lot more rare than the internet would have you believe. I've got about 500 hours in Pokemon Scarlet and I never encountered a single memorable glitch. I'm almost disappointed about that, given how much they were talked up. And I started my game within a few days of launch, too. I'm not going to deny that there are serious issues with modern Pokemon games (Arceus knows I'd love to see Gamefreak step up their game), but often they're overblown by permanently online people with nothing better to do.
Scarlet and Legends were two of the most fun Pokemon games I've ever played, despite all the flaws.

Having been around since the very beginning of Pokémon’s inception, I’ve been hooked since the very start. What does it for me is the curiosity of new Pokémon, running through that new region with only new Pokémon and getting to know them. And eventually: the competitive scene for Pokémon. I enjoy the multiplayer and love to see what the new Pokémon have to offer for the competitive scene. That’s just my itch and I know it isn’t for everyone.
Besides the competitive scene, I also enjoy ribbon collecting and shiny hunting. So there’s a lot for me to dig into to keep me satisfied until the new generation comes around. And it lasts longer for me because of that multiplayer aspect. For the people who complain about “there’s nothing to do”, are certainly not PvP players. Which is a huge downer, because they are missing out on a lot!

I'm in a weird position with Pokemon. I quit after Generation 6 because it pissed me off to no end that they got rid of the battle frontier in ORAS... (Ash losing the Kalos League didn't help their case on that front either.) I didn't touch Gen 7, I didn't touch Gen 8, and I have only just played Gen 9 because someone bought it for me.
What kinda brought me back was Legends Arceus. I really enjoyed that game due to how different it was, how interactable the Pokemon were, the Action RPG elements it's great. Now after tolerating Gen 9, I think I'm only going to stick around for the Legends Games. I might "borrow" gen 10, or play a romhack every so often, but I just can't really support the mainline games financially unless something drastically changes going forward.

But I felt so betrayed by Pokémon those past 6 years, I was just a natural "death". Sometimes I play romehacks, showdown, pokerogue but it's not the same has before. I still know the entire lore/pokedex but I cannot tell that I'm a Pokémon fan anymore.
Even tho I'm dropping this licence, Pokémon will have a special place in my heart and I will always be thankful that it was in my life.

I grew up with Pokemon and played a game every gen and.. yeah, it feels like home. Even if, *for me*, Legends felt a bit off the mark with the battles (my favorite portion of the mainline games) and progression and I haven’t replayed it since I completed the Dex, I’ll probably still pick up Legends ZA. Confession: I enjoyed BDSP far more because of it hitting those notes that I do enjoy in battles.
I think the other part of that is trying to follow almost anime/vgc style rules where I can, like same number of Pokemon going into the battle for Gyms/Grand Trials/E4, self-locking my level training to not exceed that of my next challenge, only hold items. Add in replays as monotype runs. Adds some fun challenge and exploration of Pokemon I may not normally use.
The games may have their issues and areas where they can improve but..I love the simplicity and home-like feel of it, especially as my kids are showing more interest in it.

I think the older gens had more Adventure to them, where it felt like you were exploring through forests, caves, tundras all while trying to be the best. While there's some of that back with the openness of Gen 9, it has felt like it's disappeared a good bit with the switch games. So much fidelity hasn't been utilized to the full level like it used to.

"Looked a little bit better in execution" is like the most underhanded throw to S/V I've ever heard, and this is the problem with us Pokemon fans. We let them abuse us. The new games are barely functional pre-alpha builds. I've never seen a company railroad a fanbase so hard, and the best we've got is "could have looked a little better." This is why it will never BE better.

  • @Frysbear

One of the greatest strengths is the shortness and replay-ability. Having a game with as many creatures in it as they do lends to each play through being different. You mentioned how you can dump hundreds of hours into it getting into competitive or shiny hunting, or just enjoy the main part of the game casually and it's not a huge investment. I'd add that the short aspect of the games, gives another option where you can dump hundreds of hours playing it over and over, and it can still be somewhat fresh. There is a reason pokemon challenge runs are such a thing.
Pokemon just has a perfect loop of basic engaging mechanics at it's core, with (like you said) some really awesome ideas each gen with world building and gimmicks, that even if they aren't fleshed out that well, it's honestly not the biggest deal, because they're not putting all their eggs in that basket. Would it be nice, sure! But there is still enough good stuff there for a tasty little meal.

  • @raymaikeru

I think for me, it's because even if you don't like a certain aspect of the Pokémon franchise, there is so much other angles you can still be part of. Like I don't have Scarlet and Violet, only tried it out from a friend of mine, but I don't actually have a copy because of obvious issues. But I still really love the anime, the lore, the etymology and designs, the cards, other aspects of the franchise. I think the games' current way of battle mechanics not being changed is just simply due to them hitting perfection for the intention of Pokémon being "baby's first RPG". The rules and mechanics are easy to learn, while there's other elements in the battles that make it "dedicate to master", like Nature, EVs and IVs, and team synergy. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it", and they probably know if they changed it drastically, it's lead to alienation from their current VGC player-base. That's why they got other games than just the mainline titles. It's why I love the direction they're going for the Legends series. For those who think the mainline formula is becoming stale, let alone them getting to be more experimental. If anything, Pokémon's ideas and concepts allows other people to, well, build upon them for the monster taming genre. Good lord I am for my own fantasy universe I'm making.

    • @raymaikeru
      @raymaikeru 9 дней назад

Side note: Yeah I'm currently addicted to TCG Pocket. I think they struck platinum in making a really good F2P Pokémon game. The game is really F2P friendly. They give you enough cards, Basic and pretty strong, to make a battle deck, at the start. Then there's the actual F2P loop. Big reason why I think this game is addicting is because this game DOESN'T WASTE TOO MUCH OF YOUR TIME. The daily loop is simply Log In, Open a Pack, then if you got the stamina: Wonder Pick. Got the time? Battle. Don't got either? Don't worry just wait for 12 hours of the day and open another pack and boom Dailies done. 4 hourglasses right there. Every 3 days of dailies equal one extra free packet, and I think this loop is brilliant. Heck, the battle part you don't even have to do online battles. The event rewards, like Promo cards, are obtained in the solo mode only. Even for online battle rewards, you get rewards for simply PARTICIPATING. Winning gives you only a bragging rights emblem XP on top of it.

As someone who started in Gen 3 with my GBA SP (still have it), it's still fun to play and glbest for casuals. Current generations on thr Switch is even more challenging and fun, especially with the advent of Shiny Hunting. Shiny Hunting in the newer games is fun and enjoying. It's even more exciting when you found a shiny you want in Poke Radar or Dynamax Adventures (I caught my Shiny 3rd legendaries already and despite the struggles, I'm happy that I got them).

They lost me in the Switch era. The 3DS games were already hit or miss, I did enjoy a fair share of what they had to offer, but... At the same time the magic that I loved about the series was fading away. The Dexit announcement was the final nail in the coffin, and by the time SV got announced the worst had happened: I didn't care anymore. Not love, hate, or even fear; only pure, unadulterated indifference. And that's probably the worst emotion you could instill on someone that used to call herself a fan.
To me, what made Pokémon a magical experience, especially in the GBA-DS era (with BW2 being when this reached its apex) was the ability to use the creatures as a device to bring me into an expansive world, a world where there's so many details to dig into, so many little stories to be told and battles to be had. Grinding had a purpose, for example to be able to beat those stupidly hard champions in the PWT tournaments, whereas in the newer games no such facilities to actually use the Pokémon you've put so much care into exist. Stories took a chance to take themselves seriously, starting with Platinum and the gen 5 games, and, while I'm glad games like SM or SV have tried to follow on that, it's hard to forgive the trash writing on XY, USUM or SwSh. In any case, everything was this grand adventure that had polish, detail, a ton of secrets for you to discover, and reasons for me to sink hundreds upon hundreds of hours upon a single save file. The lovable creatures were just a means to an end, in this sense.
And all this rambling brings me to the point you put about the games now being just a few dozen hours and done. Yep, that's my problem. Shiny hunting isn't meaningful at all, and without this amazing battle facilities why should I care about raising my favorite Pokémon in a scenario where I can see them shine? They removed my main reasons to want to play at all, and being that one of those reasons used to be, as a long term goal, that I wanted to raise by myself every Pokémon possible because I enjoyed that sort of grind, so it's easy to see how the Dexit announcement destroyed all my passion for that project.
The irony? Nowadays I've found a game that to my weird self is pretty much what I always wanted Pokémon to be, and that is... Genshin Impact? Yeah, I'm not kidding. I have my fair share of adventures, an expansive world with lots of secrets that keeps growing and growing, and building my characters scratches that grinding itch that I used to have with the National Pokédex. Sure, gacha and everything, but for me the characters are just a means to an end, just like the Pokémon were in ye old days. So yeah, in a weird twist of fate, Genshin is my new Pokémon, somehow.
If you, dear reader, somehow got to the end of this wall of text with your sanity intact, I salute you. I guess I got a bit too passionate about my story with this particular franchise about cute elemental animals.

@@madnessarcade7447”what makes Pokémon magical” is largely subjective and will be different things for different people, that’s kinda the beauty of it
You coming in and trying to impose your view on someone else quite honestly makes you a bit of a dick

Because once Westerners have a favorite, it’s hard for others of the same genre to be popular.

Haven’t even started the video yet and I already know why I won’t quit. Not only has Pokémon been my childhood but it gives me feelings that no other games has besides cyberpunk 2077. It allows me to have these cool ahh pets to, battle, play, dance, feed, ride them, that I couldn’t otherwise irl . Not only that the characters, the stories, the settings are just so beautiful, even tho I only play the mainline the most I still find my own role playing ways to have fun even within the “bad” games like sv or swsh. This is gonna sound cringy as fucc but Pokémon isn’t just the biggest gaming franchise ever it’s a lifestyle that even as an adult I’m not willing to give up no matter who Nintendo sues or does to the games. Also multiple player is an amazing thing they added me and my friend tried it out once and it worked perfectly sadly he’s lost motivation to play the game so I have no one to play Pokémon with at all but that’s fine.

As a die hard fan of Pokemon when I watched its anime on my childhood, played and finished Blue and Gold while I didn't finish Emerald. So yeah, I outgrew it fast than any other series lol.

Idk I wouldn't say most people that go watch the new Star Wars films are addicted, they are just connected to it. (Ok, well, some star wars fans get addicted but not the general public haha)

Everyone is still looking for that perfect Pokémon game. We are still very hopeful. If gen 10 is not a hit I’ll leave the rest to my son. I’ve played since gen 1 and I’m 35 years old. I feel gen 10 should utilize most mechanics like mega evolution, dynamax, terrestrialization, and gen 10 should be fusion. That would make Pokémon battles sooo surprising. You don’t know what someone is going to pull out on you. Also you should be able traverse to past regions. Each region should be a dlc.

It’s very simple and fun, there’s also the nostalgia and they’re one of the only games that actually experiment and add something new almost every game (remakes aside) you look at 2K and COD and it’s a lot of the same old same. New guns, same goal. NBA, updated roster, same game. With pokemon you’ve got usually 100+ NEW PKMN to discover with new abilities to experiment with, competitive play opens your eyes up even more and adds a new element to the way you look at stats and whatnot, it’s a simple formula but there’s so many variables you can’t help but be excited to start new journey time and time again. Playing the old
Stuff on Delta, I actually appreciate SV more cuz of the ease of play. No HM’s, I can focus on having better coverage moves and whatnot, I can catch almost anything right out the gate without having to wait till after the 8th gym to finally get a pseudo that I now have to grind for hours just to use it for 5 battles and be done with the game. I genuinely
Believe Pokemon can only get better and PalWorld is a great example of how much further Pokemon CAN go

TemTem was close for me until i got to breeding. i was SO CLOSE for perfect EV breeding. basically 1 point off. but then i ran out of chances since you are limited to how many times you can breed in a generations. then you have to start all over.
i do enjoy the difficulty of TemTem though. feels far more difficult than pokemon
