Good morning, I have a 2014 dodge avenger 3.6. The engine started vibrating and the engine light came on. We put a tester under the dash and it read code po520 would that cause the engine to vibrate?
So glad I found this page. My wife called today from her 2016 Jeep GC and said low oil pressure light just came on. I said pull over and shut it down. I drove 8 miles to meet her and oil was all underneath the car. No oil on the stick. Had it towed home and put a gallon back in, just to drive it off the wrecker and into the shop. Now it's not leaking (other than residual on frame/pan) Drain plug, filter cap, and filler cap all tight. Had no clue where to start looking. This video helped me at least find a starting point. Confirms everything I've read the last few days about this oil filter / bypass valve assembly. I love his quote, "you know parts people, they give you what they give you, they ain't always right".
Oil change today revealed a broken spring valve mechanism. Nobody at the shop knew how it was supposed to work or if it was necessary. Even a trip to the local Dodge dealer left me wondering what part needed to be replaced - they could not find anything of the sort and no exploded diagram. I suspected then that this would require a whole new housing, or maybe it came with the cap. Your video cleared up all the mystery. I don't often comment on youtube videos, but your video really deserved an 'attaboy' today. Thanks!
+Tim Guezen I have been working with Dorman products to come up with a repair piece for this issue. It still may be awhile however. In the mean time the only repair is replacement of the oil filter housing/cooler assembly. They don't sale the individual pieces. I'm hoping that Dorman changes that. Been chasing an oil leak on one of these engines for 3 days. I found it after watching your video. To bad i can't get part for 2 weeks. Thanks for making video, it saved my butt.
Perfect solution The shop was about to replace the oil sender and I found your videos. It was the wrong filter from Napa just as you said. I replaced it with the correct filter and all light are gone and the Van is not in limp mode anymore. You saved me 300$ as it was going in for repair this afternoon. I learnt a lesson not to trust the parts stores computer when you ask for something it might not be correct. Thanks again
I have actually done a few videos about that. That bypass valve is my one claim to fame.....after going around and talking to companies, Dorman was the one that agreed that it was needed and we worked together on making it happen. Thanks for watching and make sure to subscribe.

I have a question related to the Slight extra height of the later cooler. Does the extra height indicate an increased cooling capacity or is it simply due to different supplier?
I had to replace this on my 2015 Chrysler 200s 3.6. I changed all the gaskets and did everything as I was told. After that though, my engine never sounded the same. Now one of my cylinders (cylinder 6) has a misfire. Change the spark plugs and the boots and it's still giving me the same error. Funny thing everything started going to hell after I had to change my radiator too, after my warranty expired. I'm to the point of selling this car. Thank you for your videos bro. This just happened to me today. It is a 2014 Jeep Wrangler JK with 82,000 miles on it. It is a few months older than its warranty and I think I'm going to be eating this one. Based on how common this issue was/is on the 2014 this should have been a recall item. New subscriber here. Really enjoyed your style of presentation.
Thanks for the info.. Here's another issue with this units: Coolant leaks. It has a series of plugs in the housing , depending on what vehicle it's used on. On my 2014 caravan, one plug let go and lost all coolant. Terrible design and location for a "plastic" assembly.

@@MotorCityMechanic mine is leaking coolant seems to be just pouring out from it somwhere through that valley started slowly for a few months but now it just drains the system in seconds and is un-driveable I'm sure it's not getting in the oil though.

@MC - This is an excellent video. I just learned about this plastic part breaking a few days ago. And here you have full video and writeup on this issue. The newer housing has had problems and there's been two engineering changes to remedy the situation. My question to you... can the newer housing be used on the 2011-2013 3.6L motor? I think the newer filter design is better than the older design assuming they worked out the 2014 and newer housing design issues. Thanks in advance..
I haven't tried to see if it will interchange with the older style. One issue I would see is the obvious.....every time you had the oil changed they would try to install the wrong oil filter. Both versions use a different style of cartridge filter.I have seen that done before by an aftermarket shop and it caused no oil pressure. Luckily it didn't damage the engine. OK... I perform my own oil changes so that won't be a problem. This link was posted in a thread on Wrangler Forums.. that's how I found your video. I'm sure you'll be receiving many more visitors.. the thread is about a 2014 Jeep that the engine was "blown" and FCA is not honoring the warranty due to the oil filter. I'm assuming it has somthing to do with your findings. Great work here.

MotorCity Mechanic i have a 2012 Grand Cherokee 3.6 and i just put new gaskets on the part but two days later it is leaking agin does it mean i need a new part??
I dont think the seals/gaskets were the initial leak.....I believe it was the plastic assembly. I recommend replacing the complete assembly this time and then you shouldnt have any issues. I used the new housing and right filter for that housing and a new sending unit. When I went to Auto Zone to get the sending unit I also tried to get the temp sensor but he showed me that the 2013 durango 3.6 didnt have a listing for an oil temp sensor. I thought wtf it has to have one im looking at a temp sensor of some kind but its not related to the P06dd I cant seem to get away from. You are the best at explaining the ins and outs of mechanics. I appreciate that:)
A regular engineer: "Lets place the oil cooler in an easy to reach spot in front of the radiator and isolate it from coolant so they won't mix, making it out of metal will make it last too." Retarded Chrysler engineer: "Dur, duh, let's place the coolant and oil right next to each other in a plastic container in the middle of the engine! I'm smart!"

@@MotorCityMechanic Thanks again, I and my Jeep buddies swapped out the oil cooler/filter housing this past Saturday (7 hours to do the work) and your torque sequence and torque pressure guide helped us BIG TIME. We decided to clamp the coolant hose rather than drain and it worked like a charm. While we were in there, we changed out the spark plugs and PCV as well. 85K, it was nearly time to do it regardless.
Just did my oil change in my 2011 I just bought two months ago and when I removed the filter the valve was there and I turned around to get the new filter and I heard a ping and gone... Fell down into the pan I drained the oil into. Luckily autozone had the Dorman bypass valve. Bad design but glad I was able to get the part to fix it! Love your videos man I've learned a lot about these engines.
Thats how it always happens for me.....I take the cap off and then get prepared for the sound. Most time nothing happens. Glad to see the part is in stock in stores. I have a 2016 wrangler I have change my oil since the beginning thank you for making me pay extra special attention to the oil filter I could easily see getting the wrong filter popping it in there and not realizing it’s the wrong one thanks again for this video. Just one moment in lapse of judgment and it could cost you an engine it’s not like you can see down in there when you pop that filter in
Appreciate your videos. Just ordered the part via your Amazon link. Like you said there are 2 part numbers that appear to be interchangeable, but filters change. My 2015 200C 3.6L uses PN#68105583AE, same number for other models except E is an F and filter doesn't have the locator pin type end. Started this adventure going after an oil pressure sending unit code and using your 2 part video on that. Had tried your shortcut video, but just couldn't get to it so went the manifold off route. Once I got to it the sending unit just spun as the bushing in the housing that it screws into was stripped and had been visibly leaking by. Also worth noting is all the parts houses are selling a 1-1/16 oil pressure switch as a direct replacement that uses a standard 1-1/16 hex head so sending unit sockets won't fit (to small without the rounded edges) and there isn't room to get a normal 3" long deep well in there so unless you get an OEM sending unit plan on removing this "Oil Filter HSNG" just to replace the pressure sending unit. Any idea what the torx head size is on these housings and what the torque spec is?

Last week I bought a 2015 Ram Tradesman Cargo C/V bright white with 1300 miles on it. Man, they are very rare and hard to find now with lower miles on them. They stopped making them. That's cool with me, might be a collectible someday! Great to hook-up with you and your expertise on the Pentastar 3.6 and I'll be one of your disciples from here on out! I just brought my wife's Journey into the shop for the oil leak you described on top. It's still under warranty some I hope it gets fixed soon. I am glad I know what to look for in the future. Thanks for the video!
Confirmed today that this was the culprit. It is covered under the power train warranty so no charge or deductible. The part is on back order according to the dealership though and they are having a problem getting it in.

I bought a Mopar OEM oil filter installed it myself> car runs great an nomore engine light..."

Dorman makes a replacement valve and spring to fix this issue # 917-992 filter bypass vave. Snaps right in, just make sure none of the old pieces are still in the cage "tower". List is $50, looks like they know how much money it saves you because for what it is the price should be about $5. Thanks for the video, it's nice to see what I'm dealing with without taking it all apart myself. The lower ring of the valve was inside the cage and I almost put the new valve on top of it, when I fished it out it fell down in the hole at the bottom. I figure it's just plastic so maybe it can't do much damage plus it's on the outside of the filter which means oil is flowing up from that hole. I do caution people to be careful not to drop the spring in there because the black hole at the bottom grabs everything although I assume you'd be able to retrieve it with a magnet pickup tool.
That by pass valve is made by Dorman... you can get it from most auto parts and they usually have it in stock. Saved me a ton of headache before and it was the night before a long trip
I work as a mechanic for a municipality where we are basically our own customer (as opposed to working flat rate for a customer) and have always wondered what your employers think of you guys making videos of you working? Great videos by the way. I can usually just use the little time bar thingy along the bottom or speed up the video just to see how you go about something I may be working on. We currently have 10 Ram 3500s and 9 Ram 5500s and I am here because of my '11 Durango 3.6.
Thanks for heads up. I have a 2020 so the new style filter. Vehicle has less than 2000 miles so hopefully it will be quite a while before I see these issues but helpful troubleshooting if it does come around. Based on seeing the full assembly off the vehicle and the plastic main body my main concern would be a stress fracture/crack of the entire housing body or crack around the cartridge housing.

Great video and info, you're the best. My oil pressure bypass spring just flew out as I was about to install a new filter. Never found the little plastic valve, just the spring. Couldn't find anything on Alldata about the spring only on how to replace the hole housing assembly. Your video really cleared everything up. Thanks.

Thank you for explaining this so an older woman with no automotive experience can understand. Having this replaced right now on my 2017 Ram 1500. I was a little taken back at how much money i am going to be spending on this so I thought I would research it. Is it typically a 500. To 600.$ job??
I finally replaced mine with an AL unit from Amazon. Put in a the 2014 style filter. Thought it would not fit in between the cylinder heads due to the cap on one of the casting plugs. But it went in! Old plastic unit had a bad O-ring on the oil supply tube, about a quart of oil in the galley. All the plastic clips are a PITA and some important ones break! Just so you are aware, purge hose broke in half due to brittleness.
Thank you for the video. It helps me understand better. My Dodge called to say when they tried to change the oil filter it broke and it broke because it was rotted and a bad design. So now I see that is not the case...the design may be bad but not that it was rotted. Hoping to fight the charges today.
The part is about $30.00 so dont let them try to sale you on the entire assembly. Great video! Been there done that. Replaced it myself. I figured out when a oil change place would change my oil, they really wrenched on that 24MM cap housing. Bending and tweeking everything. Then the oil started leaking. Since I bought the van from my owner, I do every oil change. I'm very careful removing and tightening the cap. My question to you is: what can be done with the transmission to keep it from shifting down 1,2, even 3 gears going down a hill?? I will be going 70 MPH. As I start to go down the hill if I don't keep steady pressure on the gas pedal, and let off some to keep my speed at 70, the transmission will shift down! I'll go from 2,200 RPM to over 4,000 to 5,000 RPM!!!!! Ive tried everything to make it not do it. Nothing works! I put it in manual mode, still does it. Cruise on or of, still does it. Keeping my foot on the gas, when I do that, my speed just keeps increasing and now I am speeding! So whenever I see a down hill coming, I have to back way off and do like 40 to 45 MPH down a hill because of the shifting down. SO that puts everyone else trying to run me over going down a hill. I cringe everytime! Is there anyway to shut this off??? I hate it! I don't like my engine to go over 3,000 rpms! It's been back to the dealer many times and they say the transmission is working the way it's designed to. I'm and Expediter and I haul freight all over the country in this van. I have over 555,000 miles on it. I love the van, except for the transmission. I would think there would be a switch on the dash to shut it off. We think it's a program in the PCM or TCM that makes it do it. Can it be over written or deleted??? Cause I will tell you, it really sucks going 70 mph and all of a sudden your transmission drops down 3 gears and your engine is screaming!!! All these Promasters do it. Most people don't care and they just let them rev. I don't. Mine is a 2014 Ram Promaster 3500 3.6. Any information would be greatly appreciated !!! Thank you! Randy.

Youd think that Theye'd redesign it! also ran into the problem with Auto Zone trying to sell me the wrong oil filter. What a difference a year model makes. (Mine is a 2014) Got my first one replaced under warranty so now at 141k I will be waiting for your video on replacement when the shoe drops.

Aw man that's a great video deeply appreciated I was wondering cause my wife has the 2011 journey crew 3.6 I removed her oil and found oil and what seemed like mixer of coolant in that valley range you described she has the new filter like you stated not the spring one I removed her oil rings on the bottom on three of holes there's a small piece broke off on the right side of each of the three holes in the same spot where the oil rings go like someone most likely our mechanic or his helpers accidentally used a screw driver or something to remove the oil rings and might of chipped off those small tiny pieces I removed the oil rings with my thumb fingernail didn't break anything on the other ones when I put back on the oil rings it covers those small spots flush but could it still possibly leak from there even though it seems sealed in with the new oil rings and the oil temp sensor and that other sensor do they need to be wrenched in all the way when I removed my wife's I still see threads on her sensors like they were not tightened all the way or is that the way they go also will I just have to replace the whole oil cooler housing like you mentioned possibly we've had our mechanic replace it three times and try to fix it about at least six times or more since 2014 and he's ASE Certified with his own shop him and his wife we've known and respect for years they do great work also but it seems at times the journey frustrates him with the same problem alot of the times if you can respond when you get a chance I sure would be thankful also I like your channel keep up the great job you do good work thanks
Great video as usual. I was an engineer (thankfully electrical not responsible for any designing) at Chrysler/FCA for over 10+ years). Scenario: My wife called me 10 minutes after she left claiming it (2015 GC Summit), 3.6L) was overheating. I went there and found there was no coolant in the system. I went to the gas station and bought a gallon poured it into the radiator and made it home. After looking at it, it was determined the leak was coming from behind the oil filter somewhere on top of the assembly. I mean it was squirting a stream of coolant ~3/8" from this spot (I saw it myself). My question, have you ever seen this part acting in this sort of way and before I tear everything apart, I wanted your opinion. I checked it and only coolant (dirty) was piling up. No codes, or anything from either WiTech or CDA except for an overheating scenario. Have your ever seen this before and is it worth it to replace it. Thanks for all your help, it has saved me a lot of $ and time in the past...
Yeah the housing will either leak oil or coolant. The coolant leak can be internal to the oil system or leak externally and that’s where my money is on yours. One of the plastic “port plugs” may have popped out or where the coolant bolts to the housing it might be leaking

@MotorCityMechanic I have replaced the 3.6 oil cooler on my 2016 Town&Country with a aluminum one and now it says 5 psi oil pressure at idle. I replaced the oil pressure sensor with a mopar bc I thought the aftermarket one was no good (it was 4 psi and the oil light would go on). Even have the mopar oil filter. It was 19 psi before I changed it. So no oil light at 5 psi do you think it's good enough? It goes beyond the minimum like over 10 at 1000rpm. Over 20@2000rpm, over 30@3000rpm etc.
I just found almost all of the oil drained out of my engine, and it's all in the radiator and overflow container. Thick, brown, milky oil and coolant. While the dipstick is bone dry, the engine compartment is full of the oily mess in the drivers front corner where it came out of the overflow hose. Is there a failure mode on this assembly where it could pull all the oil out of the engine and pump it into the coolant system? Or is a blown head gasket the only way that can happen? This was very helpful thanks! I got given the wrong oil filter from the parts guy (Older style for my 2014). I as suspicious when it looked different to the old one. When I put it in, low oil pressure 0.4 -1.2 Bar. It should be 5.0 Bar plus. Returned to normal as soon as i put the right filter in
Had to replace the oil sender on my 2014 Cherokee. Somewhat of a pain. But easier than my 2002 Blazer. Did use your videos to help me in removing and replacing the intake manifold properly.

Great video, very informative... on the paper filter theres 4 tabs that lock into the threaded cap. On a premium paper filter there is a piece of plastic hanging between the 4 tabs...does that plastic piece that hanging between tabs sit in the tower on the bypass valve?

Dean Hamilton Morning Dean.....it depends on the vehicle. The rear wheel drive vehicles will have to have both the upper and lower intake manifolds removed. On the front wheel drivers you may not have to. I know for sure that on the minivans I can get it out with out removing anything. I actually did a video on this for the minivan. I feel pretty good that I should be able to do the same on the other front wheel driver vehicles as well
Dean Hamilton Yeah Dean.....you will need to remove both the upper and lower intakes. If your replacing it.....first make sure someone didn't install the wrong style oil filter cartridge. I have seen this a few times so far without checking the obvious.
Your videos are tops! I have a 2013 T&C with the 3.6 Pentastar. Have a quick question, if you don't mind. I think the oil pressure sensor is in the oil cooler housing. Do you know if the pressure reading is taken after or before the filter? I apologize if you mentioned it in this or another of your videos. Thanks! Edit: Reading the comments below, I see that some folks had an issue with the spring breaking and falling into the cooler assembly. I ordered an SKP bypass valve in one of my rockauto orders. My van has 93000 miles on it. The current bypass assembly seemed intact and operable when I recently changed the oil. Should I install the new bypass valve spring and cap as a preventative measure? I was wandering from where the engine is getting some oil stains. I have 115000 miles and this is the first time that I change oil on it, it was always done at the dealership. I found the plastic cover cracked and slightly loose and there is no pressure valve in at all. I wander how long it has been that way. Thank you for your great advice.

+Jesse Whaley Double check to make sure nothing like the o-ring on the oil filter cap. Usually the oil will pool up under the intake and run out at back of the engine and down the trans. I Just have a quick question about the oil filter housing on the pentastar 3.6 I have been reading that when replacing the oil filter, some people experienced oil leaks due to the filter housing cracking. In some cases, the oil leaks were substantial. Have you experienced this? Thanks.
So why aren’t you covering coolant leak on this,my problem originates from this housing where coolant is leaking as fast as I,m pouring it in I,m using water of course for diagnostics and all I could tell is a slight area behind the water pump or timing cover housing,and where the hell can I find the torque specs for the new housing?
Great video. I just had this oil cooler replaced. Not long after I drove home from the shop, I got a code for a knock sensor bank 2. Did the mechanic damage the sensor or wire connector during install?
I just had one I had to replace yesterday just for this reason. Usually the oil leak level gets high enough that it starts flowing out the rear and on top of the trans. Thanks for watching and make sure to subscribe

Yeah I did a few videos about the bypass valve. I was the one that contacted Dorman about the item and we worked together and got it rolling and on to the shelves. Great information for sure. If I ever do have an issue, I have and old style unit, if I need to replace it, can I replace it with the newer style unit? to prevent future problems
You can but installing the wrong oil filter would be an easy mistake if you did that...especially if some one else changes the oil in the future....remember.....we dont keep vehicles for ever so eventually someone else will be driving it one day. Personally I would just keep a bypass kit in the glove box just incase. Thnaks for the question. Make sure to subscribe!

Thanks alot for this video! Since the oil filter cap relies on the o-ring for sealing and not the threads, would you say perhaps it would be a good idea to simply not tighten the cap down all the way each time you do an oil change to mitigate against overtightening issues and risk breaking the canider?
with out knowing if this is the real problem I'm so confident I'm just going to order the part everything you said is what I have been getting the oil over the transmission housing the code keep up the great videos and you're way of explaining the problems and how to fix them
I feel that will be your cause of the leak. If you have around 100k miles on the vehicle it might be the best time to replace the spark plugs while everything is apart.
I recently changed my oil for the second time in my 2014 DGC 3.6L. Soon after, I started smelling burning oil and at first thought i had spilled a little oil when refilling it (I didn't, maybe a little when draining it however). The smell got worse and I took a long look all over the engine and found the telltale pools of oil on the transmission. I know what to do now and Id like to replace the unit with a Mopar OEM part. However they are on extreme backorder at the dealership (they have 31 ordered already) and I can't find one online. I purchased the O-ring kit today thinking that I could try this approach. I feel as confident about doing it as I will ever feel (until I actually do it), but I just don't want to put all the work into it and have it not be the O-rings. I had no idea I could damage the unit by over-tightening the filter screw cover either time that I changed the oil, so I could have easily done it and this could be self-inflicted. If it is, could the failure be at the O-rings or is the housing likely cracked? Is there an after market part manufacturer that you could recommend for this part.
Finding your page has helped me learn a lot about my 2012 charger v6... thanks for your help! Lately I have been getting p06dd code and my car would not accelerate after hitting around 3000 rpm. I had recently got my oil changed at dodge dealership checked the filter and it is right. Cleared the code and erase the code it comes back on eventually but the oil psi shows around 40 psi under normal driving temp drops down to as low as 16 at idle when warm. I did notice oil at bottom of filter housing. Should I replace the oil filter housing or the oil pump or both? Again thanks for sharing your knowledge of these Mopar cars

Hi Pal! Say, I performed this op on my '14 Charger (remove/replace oil cooler). Loved the videos! While under there, I decided to swap out the spark plugs too. Got everything buttoned back up afterwards, started right up, but now I have an engine miss! It's not so bad that it throws a code...most of the time, but the code it does throw is a cylinder 5 misfire. I've pulled the plug, swapped the coil pack with #3, but no dice. Any idea of what I may have done to her? Thanks!
I got a 2014 wrangler. No leaks, took it to jiffy lube for a oil change, now about two weeks later it’s leaking straight down onto my exhaust!!😡. I believe this is exactly the problem. People keep saying I should buy a OEM replacement, but in my mind I’m thinking if the original one broke, why would I buy another one just like it for 130.00$ more then one similar? Any thoughts??? @ 2:48 See the protrusion at the side? There are 3 or 4 and they keep the cage in the tube. The spring pressing against make the thing shoot out and chip apart on reentry (like a little space ship) So I am gonna file down the 'catchs' and the button cage thing might be able to be removed, but at least it won't shoot out.
@MC Mechanic Is the Coolant hooked up to the Oil Adapter/housing unit? If yes, would it be possible that a leak in the adapter/housing unit cause the Coolant to be murky?
It sure is and its the most likely cause of that issue. I recommend replacing it and have the cooling system flushed multiple times until the coolant clears up. Thanks for watching and make sure to subscribe

Good morning, I have a 2014 dodge avenger 3.6. The engine started vibrating and the engine light came on. We put a tester under the dash and it read code po520 would that cause the engine to vibrate?

How far can I run a vehicle with no oil filter bypass.. Found mine broken. Was able to take out some from the shaft. Nearest shop is 30 miles.

So glad I found this page. My wife called today from her 2016 Jeep GC and said low oil pressure light just came on. I said pull over and shut it down. I drove 8 miles to meet her and oil was all underneath the car. No oil on the stick. Had it towed home and put a gallon back in, just to drive it off the wrecker and into the shop. Now it's not leaking (other than residual on frame/pan) Drain plug, filter cap, and filler cap all tight. Had no clue where to start looking. This video helped me at least find a starting point. Confirms everything I've read the last few days about this oil filter / bypass valve assembly.
I love his quote, "you know parts people, they give you what they give you, they ain't always right".
Oil change today revealed a broken spring valve mechanism. Nobody at the shop knew how it was supposed to work or if it was necessary. Even a trip to the local Dodge dealer left me wondering what part needed to be replaced - they could not find anything of the sort and no exploded diagram. I suspected then that this would require a whole new housing, or maybe it came with the cap. Your video cleared up all the mystery. I don't often comment on youtube videos, but your video really deserved an 'attaboy' today. Thanks!
+Tim Guezen I have been working with Dorman products to come up with a repair piece for this issue. It still may be awhile however. In the mean time the only repair is replacement of the oil filter housing/cooler assembly. They don't sale the individual pieces. I'm hoping that Dorman changes that. Perfect solution The shop was about to replace the oil sender and I found your videos. It was the wrong filter from Napa just as you said. I replaced it with the correct filter and all light are gone and the Van is not in limp mode anymore. You saved me 300$ as it was going in for repair this afternoon. I learnt a lesson not to trust the parts stores computer when you ask for something it might not be correct. Thanks again

Not sure if anyone mentioned it but Doorman makes a replacement oil bypass valve part# 917-992
I have actually done a few videos about that. That bypass valve is my one claim to fame.....after going around and talking to companies, Dorman was the one that agreed that it was needed and we worked together on making it happen. Thanks for watching and make sure to subscribe.
@@MotorCityMechanic that is cool! However, I found the Dorman part to be just as failure prone. After two failures I opted to install the 2014-present assembly. I have a question related to the Slight extra height of the later cooler. Does the extra height indicate an increased cooling capacity or is it simply due to different supplier?
I had to replace this on my 2015 Chrysler 200s 3.6. I changed all the gaskets and did everything as I was told. After that though, my engine never sounded the same. Now one of my cylinders (cylinder 6) has a misfire. Change the spark plugs and the boots and it's still giving me the same error. Funny thing everything started going to hell after I had to change my radiator too, after my warranty expired. I'm to the point of selling this car. Thank you for your videos bro. This just happened to me today. It is a 2014 Jeep Wrangler JK with 82,000 miles on it. It is a few months older than its warranty and I think I'm going to be eating this one. Based on how common this issue was/is on the 2014 this should have been a recall item. New subscriber here. Really enjoyed your style of presentation.

Thanks for the info.. Here's another issue with this units: Coolant leaks. It has a series of plugs in the housing , depending on what vehicle it's used on. On my 2014 caravan, one plug let go and lost all coolant. Terrible design and location for a "plastic" assembly.

@@MotorCityMechanic mine is leaking coolant seems to be just pouring out from it somwhere through that valley started slowly for a few months but now it just drains the system in seconds and is un-driveable I'm sure it's not getting in the oil though.

@MC - This is an excellent video. I just learned about this plastic part breaking a few days ago. And here you have full video and writeup on this issue. The newer housing has had problems and there's been two engineering changes to remedy the situation. My question to you... can the newer housing be used on the 2011-2013 3.6L motor? I think the newer filter design is better than the older design assuming they worked out the 2014 and newer housing design issues.

I haven't tried to see if it will interchange with the older style. One issue I would see is the obvious.....every time you had the oil changed they would try to install the wrong oil filter. Both versions use a different style of cartridge filter.I have seen that done before by an aftermarket shop and it caused no oil pressure. Luckily it didn't damage the engine. OK... I perform my own oil changes so that won't be a problem. This link was posted in a thread on Wrangler Forums.. that's how I found your video. I'm sure you'll be receiving many more visitors.. the thread is about a 2014 Jeep that the engine was "blown" and FCA is not honoring the warranty due to the oil filter. I'm assuming it has somthing to do with your findings. Great work here.

MotorCity Mechanic i have a 2012 Grand Cherokee 3.6 and i just put new gaskets on the part but two days later it is leaking agin does it mean i need a new part??
I dont think the seals/gaskets were the initial leak.....I believe it was the plastic assembly. I recommend replacing the complete assembly this time and then you shouldnt have any issues. I used the new housing and right filter for that housing and a new sending unit.
When I went to Auto Zone to get the sending unit I also tried to get the temp sensor but he showed me that the 2013 durango 3.6 didnt have a listing for an oil temp sensor. I thought wtf it has to have one im looking at a temp sensor of some kind but its not related to the P06dd I cant seem to get away from.

On that p06dd code….your going to have to replace the oil pump assembly to get rid of that .

@@MotorCityMechanic Thanks again, I and my Jeep buddies swapped out the oil cooler/filter housing this past Saturday (7 hours to do the work) and your torque sequence and torque pressure guide helped us BIG TIME. We decided to clamp the coolant hose rather than drain and it worked like a charm. While we were in there, we changed out the spark plugs and PCV as well. 85K, it was nearly time to do it regardless.

Just did my oil change in my 2011 I just bought two months ago and when I removed the filter the valve was there and I turned around to get the new filter and I heard a ping and gone... Fell down into the pan I drained the oil into. Luckily autozone had the Dorman bypass valve. Bad design but glad I was able to get the part to fix it! Love your videos man I've learned a lot about these engines.
Thats how it always happens for me.....I take the cap off and then get prepared for the sound. Most time nothing happens. Glad to see the part is in stock in stores. I have a 2016 wrangler I have change my oil since the beginning thank you for making me pay extra special attention to the oil filter I could easily see getting the wrong filter popping it in there and not realizing it’s the wrong one thanks again for this video. Just one moment in lapse of judgment and it could cost you an engine it’s not like you can see down in there when you pop that filter in
Appreciate your videos. Just ordered the part via your Amazon link. Like you said there are 2 part numbers that appear to be interchangeable, but filters change. My 2015 200C 3.6L uses PN#68105583AE, same number for other models except E is an F and filter doesn't have the locator pin type end. Started this adventure going after an oil pressure sending unit code and using your 2 part video on that. Had tried your shortcut video, but just couldn't get to it so went the manifold off route. Once I got to it the sending unit just spun as the bushing in the housing that it screws into was stripped and had been visibly leaking by. Also worth noting is all the parts houses are selling a 1-1/16 oil pressure switch as a direct replacement that uses a standard 1-1/16 hex head so sending unit sockets won't fit (to small without the rounded edges) and there isn't room to get a normal 3" long deep well in there so unless you get an OEM sending unit plan on removing this "Oil Filter HSNG" just to replace the pressure sending unit. Any idea what the torx head size is on these housings and what the torque spec is?

Last week I bought a 2015 Ram Tradesman Cargo C/V bright white with 1300 miles on it. Man, they are very rare and hard to find now with lower miles on them. They stopped making them. That's cool with me, might be a collectible someday!

Confirmed today that this was the culprit. It is covered under the power train warranty so no charge or deductible. The part is on back order according to the dealership though and they are having a problem getting it in.

I bought a Mopar OEM oil filter installed it myself> car runs great an nomore engine light..."

Dorman makes a replacement valve and spring to fix this issue # 917-992 filter bypass vave. Snaps right in, just make sure none of the old pieces are still in the cage "tower". List is $50, looks like they know how much money it saves you because for what it is the price should be about $5. Thanks for the video, it's nice to see what I'm dealing with without taking it all apart myself. The lower ring of the valve was inside the cage and I almost put the new valve on top of it, when I fished it out it fell down in the hole at the bottom. I figure it's just plastic so maybe it can't do much damage plus it's on the outside of the filter which means oil is flowing up from that hole. I do caution people to be careful not to drop the spring in there because the black hole at the bottom grabs everything although I assume you'd be able to retrieve it with a magnet pickup tool.
That by pass valve is made by Dorman... you can get it from most auto parts and they usually have it in stock. Saved me a ton of headache before and it was the night before a long trip
I'm wondering why hasn't a recall been done on this part. As of this post the replacement part my mechanic used was version 10.

I work as a mechanic for a municipality where we are basically our own customer (as opposed to working flat rate for a customer) and have always wondered what your employers think of you guys making videos of you working? Great videos by the way. I can usually just use the little time bar thingy along the bottom or speed up the video just to see how you go about something I may be working on. Thanks for heads up. I have a 2020 so the new style filter. Vehicle has less than 2000 miles so hopefully it will be quite a while before I see these issues but helpful troubleshooting if it does come around.
Based on seeing the full assembly off the vehicle and the plastic main body my main concern would be a stress fracture/crack of the entire housing body or crack around the cartridge housing.
Glad they finally came out with a Replacement part for that Bypass!

Thank you for explaining this so an older woman with no automotive experience can understand. Having this replaced right now on my 2017 Ram 1500. I was a little taken back at how much money i am going to be spending on this so I thought I would research it. Is it typically a 500. To 600.$ job??
I finally replaced mine with an AL unit from Amazon. Put in a the 2014 style filter. Thought it would not fit in between the cylinder heads due to the cap on one of the casting plugs. But it went in! Old plastic unit had a bad O-ring on the oil supply tube, about a quart of oil in the galley. All the plastic clips are a PITA and some important ones break! Just so you are aware, purge hose broke in half due to brittleness.

Thank you for the video. It helps me understand better. My Dodge called to say when they tried to change the oil filter it broke and it broke because it was rotted and a bad design. So now I see that is not the case...the design may be bad but not that it was rotted. Hoping to fight the charges today.
The part is about $30.00 so dont let them try to sale you on the entire assembly. Great video! Been there done that. Replaced it myself. I figured out when a oil change place would change my oil, they really wrenched on that 24MM cap housing. Bending and tweeking everything. Then the oil started leaking. Since I bought the van from my owner, I do every oil change. I'm very careful removing and tightening the cap. My question to you is: what can be done with the transmission to keep it from shifting down 1,2, even 3 gears going down a hill?? I will be going 70 MPH. As I start to go down the hill if I don't keep steady pressure on the gas pedal, and let off some to keep my speed at 70, the transmission will shift down! I'll go from 2,200 RPM to over 4,000 to 5,000 RPM!!!!! Ive tried everything to make it not do it. Nothing works! I put it in manual mode, still does it. Cruise on or of, still does it. Keeping my foot on the gas, when I do that, my speed just keeps increasing and now I am speeding! So whenever I see a down hill coming, I have to back way off and do like 40 to 45 MPH down a hill because of the shifting down. SO that puts everyone else trying to run me over going down a hill. I cringe everytime! Is there anyway to shut this off??? I hate it! I don't like my engine to go over 3,000 rpms! It's been back to the dealer many times and they say the transmission is working the way it's designed to. I'm and Expediter and I haul freight all over the country in this van. I have over 555,000 miles on it. I love the van, except for the transmission. I would think there would be a switch on the dash to shut it off. We think it's a program in the PCM or TCM that makes it do it. Can it be over written or deleted??? Cause I will tell you, it really sucks going 70 mph and all of a sudden your transmission drops down 3 gears and your engine is screaming!!! All these Promasters do it. Most people don't care and they just let them rev. I don't. Mine is a 2014 Ram Promaster 3500 3.6. Any information would be greatly appreciated !!! Thank you! Randy.

Youd think that Theye'd redesign it! also ran into the problem with Auto Zone trying to sell me the wrong oil filter. What a difference a year model makes. (Mine is a 2014) Got my first one replaced under warranty so now at 141k I will be waiting for your video on replacement when the shoe drops.

Aw man that's a great video deeply appreciated I was wondering cause my wife has the 2011 journey crew 3.6 I removed her oil and found oil and what seemed like mixer of coolant in that valley range you described she has the new filter like you stated not the spring one I removed her oil rings on the bottom on three of holes there's a small piece broke off on the right side of each of the three holes in the same spot where the oil rings go like someone most likely our mechanic or his helpers accidentally used a screw driver or something to remove the oil rings and might of chipped off those small tiny pieces I removed the oil rings with my thumb fingernail didn't break anything on the other ones when I put back on the oil rings it covers those small spots flush but could it still possibly leak from there even though it seems sealed in with the new oil rings and the oil temp sensor and that other sensor do they need to be wrenched in all the way when I removed my wife's I still see threads on her sensors like they were not tightened all the way or is that the way they go also will I just have to replace the whole oil cooler housing like you mentioned possibly we've had our mechanic replace it three times and try to fix it about at least six times or more since 2014 and he's ASE Certified with his own shop him and his wife we've known and respect for years they do great work also but it seems at times the journey frustrates him with the same problem alot of the times if you can respond when you get a chance I sure would be thankful also I like your channel keep up the great job you do good work thanks

Scenario: My wife called me 10 minutes after she left claiming it (2015 GC Summit), 3.6L) was overheating. I went there and found there was no coolant in the system. I went to the gas station and bought a gallon poured it into the radiator and made it home. After looking at it, it was determined the leak was coming from behind the oil filter somewhere on top of the assembly. I mean it was squirting a stream of coolant ~3/8" from this spot (I saw it myself).
My question, have you ever seen this part acting in this sort of way and before I tear everything apart, I wanted your opinion. I checked it and only coolant (dirty) was piling up. No codes, or anything from either WiTech or CDA except for an overheating scenario. Have your ever seen this before and is it worth it to replace it. Thanks for all your help, it has saved me a lot of $ and time in the past...
Yeah the housing will either leak oil or coolant. The coolant leak can be internal to the oil system or leak externally and that’s where my money is on yours. One of the plastic “port plugs” may have popped out or where the coolant bolts to the housing it might be leaking

@MotorCityMechanic I have replaced the 3.6 oil cooler on my 2016 Town&Country with a aluminum one and now it says 5 psi oil pressure at idle. I replaced the oil pressure sensor with a mopar bc I thought the aftermarket one was no good (it was 4 psi and the oil light would go on). Even have the mopar oil filter. It was 19 psi before I changed it. So no oil light at 5 psi do you think it's good enough? It goes beyond the minimum like over 10 at 1000rpm. Over 20@2000rpm, over 30@3000rpm etc.
I just found almost all of the oil drained out of my engine, and it's all in the radiator and overflow container. Thick, brown, milky oil and coolant. While the dipstick is bone dry, the engine compartment is full of the oily mess in the drivers front corner where it came out of the overflow hose. Is there a failure mode on this assembly where it could pull all the oil out of the engine and pump it into the coolant system? Or is a blown head gasket the only way that can happen? This was very helpful thanks! I got given the wrong oil filter from the parts guy (Older style for my 2014). I as suspicious when it looked different to the old one. When I put it in, low oil pressure 0.4 -1.2 Bar. It should be 5.0 Bar plus. Returned to normal as soon as i put the right filter in
Had to replace the oil sender on my 2014 Cherokee. Somewhat of a pain. But easier than my 2002 Blazer. Did use your videos to help me in removing and replacing the intake manifold properly.

Great video, very informative... on the paper filter theres 4 tabs that lock into the threaded cap. On a premium paper filter there is a piece of plastic hanging between the 4 tabs...does that plastic piece that hanging between tabs sit in the tower on the bypass valve?
Dorman actually makes a bypass valve replacement now. Save some $$$!.

Dean Hamilton Morning Dean.....it depends on the vehicle. The rear wheel drive vehicles will have to have both the upper and lower intake manifolds removed. On the front wheel drivers you may not have to. I know for sure that on the minivans I can get it out with out removing anything. I actually did a video on this for the minivan. I feel pretty good that I should be able to do the same on the other front wheel driver vehicles as well

Dean Hamilton Yeah Dean.....you will need to remove both the upper and lower intakes. If your replacing it.....first make sure someone didn't install the wrong style oil filter cartridge. I have seen this a few times so far without checking the obvious.
Your videos are tops! I have a 2013 T&C with the 3.6 Pentastar. Have a quick question, if you don't mind. I think the oil pressure sensor is in the oil cooler housing. Do you know if the pressure reading is taken after or before the filter? I apologize if you mentioned it in this or another of your videos. Thanks! Edit: Reading the comments below, I see that some folks had an issue with the spring breaking and falling into the cooler assembly. I ordered an SKP bypass valve in one of my rockauto orders. My van has 93000 miles on it. The current bypass assembly seemed intact and operable when I recently changed the oil. Should I install the new bypass valve spring and cap as a preventative measure? Thanks again.
Also note that the filter cap has a torque and correct u 45 degree adapter to be used. If torqued too much the filter housing can crack
I was wandering from where the engine is getting some oil stains. I have 115000 miles and this is the first time that I change oil on it, it was always done at the dealership. I found the plastic cover cracked and slightly loose and there is no pressure valve in at all.
I wander how long it has been that way.

+Jesse Whaley Double check to make sure nothing like the o-ring on the oil filter cap. Usually the oil will pool up under the intake and run out at back of the engine and down the trans. I have been reading that when replacing the oil filter, some people experienced oil leaks due to the filter housing cracking.

I,m using water of course for diagnostics and all I could tell is a slight area behind the water pump or timing cover housing,and where the hell can I find the torque specs for the new housing?
Great video. I just had this oil cooler replaced. Not long after I drove home from the shop, I got a code for a knock sensor bank 2. Did the mechanic damage the sensor or wire connector during install?

Yeah I did a few videos about the bypass valve. I was the one that contacted Dorman about the item and we worked together and got it rolling and on to the shelves. You can but installing the wrong oil filter would be an easy mistake if you did that...especially if some one else changes the oil in the future....remember.....we dont keep vehicles for ever so eventually someone else will be driving it one day. Personally I would just keep a bypass kit in the glove box just incase. Thnaks for the question. Make sure to subscribe!

Thanks alot for this video! Since the oil filter cap relies on the o-ring for sealing and not the threads, would you say perhaps it would be a good idea to simply not tighten the cap down all the way each time you do an oil change to mitigate against overtightening issues and risk breaking the canider?

I feel that will be your cause of the leak. If you have around 100k miles on the vehicle it might be the best time to replace the spark plugs while everything is apart.
I recently changed my oil for the second time in my 2014 DGC 3.6L. Soon after, I started smelling burning oil and at first thought i had spilled a little oil when refilling it (I didn't, maybe a little when draining it however). The smell got worse and I took a long look all over the engine and found the telltale pools of oil on the transmission. I know what to do now and Id like to replace the unit with a Mopar OEM part. However they are on extreme backorder at the dealership (they have 31 ordered already) and I can't find one online. I purchased the O-ring kit today thinking that I could try this approach. I feel as confident about doing it as I will ever feel (until I actually do it), but I just don't want to put all the work into it and have it not be the O-rings. I had no idea I could damage the unit by over-tightening the filter screw cover either time that I changed the oil, so I could have easily done it and this could be self-inflicted. If it is, could the failure be at the O-rings or is the housing likely cracked? Is there an after market part manufacturer that you could recommend for this part.

Lately I have been getting p06dd code and my car would not accelerate after hitting around 3000 rpm. I had recently got my oil changed at dodge dealership checked the filter and it is right. Cleared the code and erase the code it comes back on eventually but the oil psi shows around 40 psi under normal driving temp drops down to as low as 16 at idle when warm. I did notice oil at bottom of filter housing. Should I replace the oil filter housing or the oil pump or both? Again thanks for sharing your knowledge of these Mopar cars

I can see both sides.....one saves on metal because it's just the intervals....other has less chance of problems.
Hi Pal! Say, I performed this op on my '14 Charger (remove/replace oil cooler). Loved the videos! While under there, I decided to swap out the spark plugs too. Got everything buttoned back up afterwards, started right up, but now I have an engine miss! It's not so bad that it throws a code...most of the time, but the code it does throw is a cylinder 5 misfire. I've pulled the plug, swapped the coil pack with #3, but no dice. Any idea of what I may have done to her? Thanks!

I got a 2014 wrangler. No leaks, took it to jiffy lube for a oil change, now about two weeks later it’s leaking straight down onto my exhaust!!😡. I believe this is exactly the problem. People keep saying I should buy a OEM replacement, but in my mind I’m thinking if the original one broke, why would I buy another one just like it for 130.00$ more then one similar? Any thoughts??? Got to love it. Almost 300 hp out of a 3.6.
@ 2:48 See the protrusion at the side? There are 3 or 4 and they keep the cage in the tube. The spring pressing against make the thing shoot out and chip apart on reentry (like a little space ship) So I am gonna file down the 'catchs' and the button cage thing might be able to be removed, but at least it won't shoot out.
@MC Mechanic Is the Coolant hooked up to the Oil Adapter/housing unit? If yes, would it be possible that a leak in the adapter/housing unit cause the Coolant to be murky?
It sure is and its the most likely cause of that issue. I recommend replacing it and have the cooling system flushed multiple times until the coolant clears up. Thanks for watching and make sure to subscribe
