Shiratorizawa's coach played in an era of volleyball where the libero position didn't even exist, as talented and as hardworking as he was, he never had a chance because of his height and coach Ukai's line in this episode was the voice actor's last line before he passed away. RIP Kazunair Tanaka.
@@semen1367 yeah they invented the position in like early 2000, due to the growing popularity of the sport and at the same time having taller and taller players
Basically 40 years ago. That's basically the peak of "bigger is better and stronger" not just in Volleyball but also in Basketball where the sport is just a big man's game and small guys like Washijo-sensei has no place inside the court.
@@JacopoBasanisi Correct me if im wrong, but didn't they invent the libero position, because of the nature of the game which was very attack heavy but lacked defense, meaning less rallies, so they wanted a position that would only focus on defense to balance it out a little more, not because they wanted a position for short people.
And then there's Coach Ukai who not only did the same, he did it to the whole team instead of one player. Not to mention, his words of encouragement became the trigger that activates their trap card to re-summon Tsukishima back into the game from graveyard. TRUE ULTRA HYPER SUPER MAX GIGACHAD.
The fact that the last thing that coach Ukai said was also the last line of his voice actor performing the character makes me tear a little bit every time i see this episode.

There's this tweet that describes this episode and the "annoying guy" dynamic between Ushijima and Hinata so well imo Ushijima normally: elevator music in brain Ushijima when hinata is within 20 feet of him: feral
Someone wrote that the "sooy" they often scream might be coming from "wasshoi" that transformed into "shoi" and "sooi"; wasshoi is kind of a "heave-ho" word. Might also be just another "hey-hey-hey" tho x) If anyone knows for sure, lmk!
Switching sides might seem a weird rule, but it's exactly as you said, to make the match fair. Everything can be problematic: supporters, lights, or even walls. That's why in the last set you change sides in the middle of the short set. Now with covid they make teams stay in your starting half (at least here in Italy) and the difference is not that much, but it's tradition and it takes you on edge because you have to continuosly find reference points
I like the scene where Hinata doesn't want to be put down on the bench. He was a character that readers could easily relate to. He was not a good volleyball player and had to work hard, but readers continued to root for him as if he were their own. But now he has answered the question that everyone generally answers "because it hurts" with "because I'm going down to the bench." The moment when Hinata became a slightly scary, mysterious, goosebump-inducing character was cool, because it seemed to steer the story.
I don’t know Japanese to check the way its worded but I would guess the reason that the line “follow up with a block” is confusing because it is intended to be “follow up ON the block” If they’re all jumping at once, they wouldn’t have time to block or receive anyway, but the thing that synchronized attack leaves them open to the most is the opponent’s block, which someone on Karasuno could be set to dig if they weren’t all attacking. If the spike isn’t blocked but is received by the other team regularly, Karasuno would have time to “follow up WITH a block” anyway, Plus it’s not like blocking a blocked ball is easy or practical anyway, it’d turn into an extra speedy joust
Fuck every single time I hear that line from Ukai about Volleyball being a sport where you're always looking up in each reaction video I watch, I tear up EVERY SINGLE TIME NO JOKE As a volleyball player I haven't thought of Volleyball that way until I first watched this episode, brilliant advice considering it also means that during the worst times you should always keep your head held high until the end.
will say it again, because you will hate it if you don't. You better do a dual reaction for episodes 9 and 10... just saying... it would be FAR BETTER IF YOU DO SO... no spoilers... just an idea...
they've already watched both, pretty sure they watched it directly after this episode on the same day. we just get it later once per day. it's already there on their patreon

The fact that he was able to deliver this iconic line as his crowning moment in the role is really bittersweet.
Yeah, I always forget that line is coming, and it always chokes me up knowing it was Kazunari Tanaka’s last line. Respect.

Coach Ukai’s Voice Actor died after voicing this episode. And his last line always gets me. The perfect VA for the role. RIP
