This scene wound up getting cut because the set was washed away during a storm, and they couldn't find anything from it again. I like to think the Barrel escape scene from The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug was compensation for this scene getting cut.

The initial Skirmish and escape down the rapids away from the Uruks would have been welcome.... Going over Waterfalls in canoes is silly and over the top. Simply the speed of the rapids would have been enough to show the rapids are quicker than the Uruks can run.

Those weren't Uruk-hai, that was a patrol of Mordor Orcs. There's a scene in the Extended Edition where Celeborn tells Aragorn that Orcs control the eastern shores of the Great River.

@@Bauglir100 ok but my point still stands and this story board does not show gollum getting close to frodo the reason for leaving the shore at night after golllum on the log... legolass shootiing off arrows from his gift from Galadriel too although no nazgul shooting....An orc or two would have done the trick. And a quick retreat it's not as bad as sarumens missing crows on the river journey anyway.

@@ronnieron2652 They probably didn't plan to include either of those scenes to begin with.
For Gollum, I'm guessing they wanted to keep him hidden from proper view until The Two Towers. But there was a similar scene where Aragorn and Boromir see Gollum floating on a log in the Extended Edition.
And the same goes for the Winged Nazgul encounter. They wanted to wait until The Two Towers before they introduced the Nazguls' winged steeds. The encounter itself does kind of get revived with the scene where the Winged Nazgul in Osgiliath tries to snatch up Frodo, only for Faramir to shoot it with his bow.

@@Bauglir100 yeah I agree iI could imagine the digital doubles would have beren employed for the sequence quite a bit and being at night would be quite hard to see the action. There is a concept art with an orc aiming at the boats from a forested bank no cliffs and no portage station.
