This was actually Ian’s last shot on his last day of filming as Gandalf. There was originally dialogue between him and Bilbo but on set both Ian and Martin agreed that it would be more powerful if there was just silence. Good choice on their part as it means that this scene can say so much more to us through their expressions, whether we’re right or wrong
Ahmed Iqbal life goes on. They’ve just been through hell, watched friends die. But even still, Gandalf starts preparing his pipe for a smoke, because life goes on, and you should cherish that the best you can
I think it might have been a quote on a 'deviantart' article but I remember once reading how smiles are like hugs from a distance, so I can see it making sense
This is actually Gandalfs way of telling Bilbo that life must go on. Despite everything you been thru, you can't deny yourself Lifes simple joys. Like nice bowl in tjhe sunset.
Perhaps my fav. scene in the movie. It has a "The end of the world... so... now what?" feeling to me. How to continue after all this? That's what Frodo asked himself after his journey as well.
I mean, this, IMO, was the best way to end this chapter of the trilogy. Like, one hobbit in WAAAYYY over his head, just went through hell and back with dwarfs, dragons, orcs, Elves, Gollum, etc. Then, you have this old sage and onion wizard. Who also went through hell and back, seeing the return of the dark lord, helping dwarfs and aiding those in need. Just to come together at the end of it all... sit, and have just a moment of silence to think. To think of home, to think of past events, to think where to plant that little acorn, and to think of the road ahead. And the fact Gandalf is sitting there gathering his thoughts while cleaning his pipe, adds a little humbleness, and just a touch of home comforts.
My brothers and I worked hard on the ranch branding cattle and tagging them, end of the day my bro sat next use just like that cleaning his weed pipe. This scene reminds me of that day.
I love the scene where the surviving Dwarves say goodbye to Thorin and bow to him as their true King Under the Mountain. It's very powerful, bowing down to not just your great king and leader, but your best friend in the whole wide world
In theaters, I lost it at this scene and laughed soooo hard after a seeing such an intense battle - and then Gandalf comes in lighting his pipe so nonchalantly. Very well done
One thing I reckon would've been ok to go with the third film is once Bilbo is back at home in Hobbiton and doesn't even know what to do with himself after all these experiences and having met a crazy dragon Smaug, but then it goes into a little flashback technique of Bilbo remembering something emotional Thorin told Bilbo during Thorins last moments "Plant your trees, & watch them grow", and then it cuts onto a shot where Bilbo finds a spot on his property, plants a tree of his choice and then decided to give it a name, and he decided to call it The Oakensield tree, he named the tree after his friend Thorin Oakensield, and then it cuts onto the shot where Bilbo realizes the ring is still in his pocket and then the film ends there
@@victoriavelkova5298 Unfortunately in the extended edition Bilbo had chosen the right thing to do was to plant the acorn in Dale, especially with the city in ruins, but as Thorin spent his final moments with Bilbo, Bilbo was pretty much told he had done what a true friend would do, but he should now go back to his home, "plant his trees and watch them grow", there was no point in saving Thorin now because he knew he was just about to die, and after saying one last thing about sharing the people and the gold, he passed away. Bilbo finally arrives back home not knowing what to do with himself, but I reckon there could've been a flashback of Bilbo remembering "Plant your trees, and watch them grow" from Thorin Oakensield. So Bilbo used the acorn he showed Thorin, or uses a new acorn he found and plants it, and once it had grown quite a fair bit he decided to name the tree The Oakensield Tree, named after Thorin Oakensield and the dwarves, and then it cuts onto the scene where Bilbo realizes the ring is still in his pocket
Greatest scene of the trilogy! After all the running, fighting, torture, and emotional bs they can finally take a second to rest, detox, and smoke so weed
I really like this moment - one of the few times in this trilogy I can say that. It would’ve been 1000x better if they’d shot it outside on a set they’d built instead of rendered.
My brother and I had to see this movie in theaters twice. The first time we were both whispering "...what the fuck...???" to each other. The second time, we almost had to step out from laughing too loud cause this scene is sO FUCKING RIDICULOUS.
Gandalf was wisest of the Maiar correct? It's very interesting to see how he deliberately went to sit beside bilbo and started fiddling with his pipe almost trying to draw his attention and then when they actually made eye contact nothing needed to be said.
If you look closely at Bofur at 1:22, you can see him kneel down at Thorin without taking his hat off in respect. Why is that? Plus in the deleted scene with Thorin's funeral, Bofur STILL has his hat on!

@@EveryoneElseIsWeirdImNormal Dude that comment was two years ago. I don't remember it at all. It was a joke, not a criticism, per se, but my opinion on it hasn't changed. The movie didn't really have time to develop it, so they made it into a "love at first sight", which completely fell flat, as they didn't really click.
