  • @themaskedman221

    Third parties can't succeed as a matter of simple mathematical fact -no third party has enough Congressional representation to secure enough electors to win in the electoral college. That conclusively rules out any notion of a successful third party campaign, even if they win the popular vote. Of course, "populists" don't tend to like the electoral college and want popular vote elections, which would indeed create viability for multi-party candidates. But then you're electing presidents with an even _lower_ share of the vote, exactly what EC opponents are trying to avoid.
    I like No Labels -they seem to be a coalition of some of the most rational politicians in both parties attempting to steer the country back to normalcy. But that's also another reason they don't stand any realistic chance in a political culture that awards ignorance, tribalism and anti-establishment dogma.

      "no third party has enough Congressional representation to secure enough electors to win in the electoral college"
      That's not how electors work for the electoral college. The parties pick their slate of electors and it's the same for third parties. Not having congressional representation would only be a problem if no one receives a majority of the electoral votes and it goes to the House of Representatives to decide.

    • @themaskedman221
      @themaskedman221 8 месяцев назад +2

      @@Nanofuture87 " would only be a problem if no one receives a majority of the electoral votes and it goes to the House of Representatives to decide."
      Which would be best-case scenario. New parties like 'No Labels' and minor parties like the 'Green Party' would hardly be "minor parties" if they had support from over half the state delegations. It's extremely difficult, if not impossible, for new or minor parties to win enough popular votes in enough states to get to 270; the best they could hope for is to win enough electoral votes in swing states to prevent any candidate from getting to 270, in which case the House would determine the election -and they would lose.
      Yes, I worded that awkwardly, but the main point still stands.

    • @DarrellPoe
      @DarrellPoe 8 месяцев назад +1

      @@themaskedman221 This is an excellent analysis that I’ve never heard properly articulated. You may have taken a while to get there, but I followed you all the way! Great, great point.
      Until there is more grassroots support - in county boards, state houses, governorships, and finally in Congress - there’s no real chance for a third party to be anything but a spoiler - and with today’s political climate, that’s just far too great a risk.

    Third party never wins. What is the point of running a candidate who will not win. They won’t get enough votes. So you will take a few million votes from either of the main parties’ candidates. Votes that can help or hurt one of them. It’s a total waste of votes.
