    These are ubiquitous in our labs. Thank you so much for posting your repair! It will surely come in handy in the near future.

    I'm glad I'm not the only one who doesn't know where the "seal, shaft (metal case)" goes. Doesn't look like it was the same inside the old seal.....but maybe that's wear.
    Given the cheap cost of kits, I can't imagine bothering to repair the shaft seal with this part, instead of just replacing it. Cheers for the demo

      yeah, the parts description and exploded diagram were a little vague. but, over a month after the replacement the pump is still working fine, so whatever the "seal, shaft (metal case)" was, i guess i didn't need it! haha. cheers!

      good luck on the rebuild!

    Not sure why this was recommended to me out of the blue, but I've rebuilt a fair number of welch and kinney rotary vane pumps, typically if your outer shaft seal has started leaking it's a secondary problem, on a lot of these pumps the vanes are made of micarta or similar material and small fragments can break away causing them to damage the inner shaft seal. In this case I know you voiced now wanting to open the case but I would have done so purely due to the fact you had all replacement gaskets on hand and would be able to confirm if you needed to remedy a damaged vane. Otherwise well done.

    Once the pump is turned off, does it leak back and slowly reduce the vacuum level? I have a model 1403 and it does that. I had to put a check valve in and it is working for me. Nice video.

      @NeonPreservation  2 года назад +1

      thanks!
      i imagine it likely would; although i haven't tested it. when i turn off my pump, i isolate the vacuum manifold from the pump then vent the pump to atmosphere.

      @@NeonPreservation Thank you very much. I was into bell jars and vacuum stuff back in the late 70s. I was spinning custom made neon tubes on a 24" diameter base and modulating them with 3 filters. Base, midrange and high. The moog music was the nicest show. I made my own brass ring spinning contacts. It was a lot of fun and many a joint was smoked too! A neon shop in Elizabeth, NJ. Was the firm that did the custom tubes for me. Only you will understand this next line. " The magnet and the steel ball". I watched along when heu made them. The company that supplied the electrodes and standoffs etc was in Irvington NJ. The Glanse or Glaze company. They used to use mercury vapor to lower the ionizing voltage or some argon, my memory is cloudy. Some of the glass tubing was coated in the shop also. If you are not a ham radio operator, you have gotten very close. We enjoy and appreciate these special areas as yours. I found your video very very interesting. Be careful of that bombarding system, that can end your life. Take care and thank you. I am in Wall twp. NJ

      @@NeonPreservation i am using my vacuum for pick and place. FYI

      cool story! i imagine the sign supply shop was Glantz, they are still around today. mercury is used in most argon fill tubes because it creates UV radiation that excites the phosphors and creates a brighter glow. i do appreciate "the magnet & steel ball" way of opening gas flasks, although my system has pressurized tanks, they hold a lot more volume and you dont have to break them open! haha.
      thank you for the warning about the bombarding system; i fear & respect the hazards, and i take extra precautions to keep away from it whenever the system is live!

    Hello, your channel is good, I want to ask, I bought a vacuum cleaner that does not have a motor, it is the same one that you replaced in your plant, which motor could I install

    • @NeonPreservation
      @NeonPreservation  3 года назад

      do you mean that you have a Welch 1402 vacuum pump that is missing a motor? the motor on my 1402 is a standard 1/2 horsepower electric motor. does this help?

      @@NeonPreservation If it helps me a lot, it also lost the filter, the belt and I don't know if it contains oil, is the used oil for vacuum?
      I am installing my plant, with some things that I get in my country. I want a website where I can buy in the US. my instagram is @micorporeo

      oil can be purchased at many vacuum supply websites, or even on Amazon:
      www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00SB9K36I
      pump parts can be found at many vacuum supply websites as well, just do a Google search for the part name or number. here are a couple to get you started, but there are many more:

    I just picked up a used one of these. the motor runs and looks real similiar to this one. Big question is: WTH do i do with it?

    • @NeonPreservation
      @NeonPreservation  3 года назад

      Welch makes superb vacuum pumps. obviously, mine is used for making neon, but they have many other applications, including manufacturing, industrial, commercial, HVAC, and in laboratory settings.

      @@NeonPreservation thanks for responding. question for me is what to do with it, i dont need it, it needs refurbished. the motor runs but the vacuum side wheel does not turn. its so heavy selling on ebay would be almost not worth the effort. I got it for the motor. its a 1402.

    • @NeonPreservation
      @NeonPreservation  3 года назад

      they are quite heavy, but very well made. even if the pump is locked up, it can likely be rebuilt... if you dont want the pump you could try listing it on ebay or craigslist as "parts or repair" for cheap, see if someone adventurous is looking for a bargain. would be a shame to throw it out.
