  • This video is a very brief overview of the basics of Mechanical Seals and their operation.
    They are used primarily in pumps to allow a rotary shaft to protrude from a housing but still seal around the gap between both of these parts. They comprise stationary and static face made from high grade carbon composites and a stainless steel spring and body.

    Studying for my test and I couldn’t wrap my head around face seals (axial mechanical seals) this cleared everything up! Awesome video, thanks!

    Please can anyone give a guide on how to calculate the position of the rotating and stationary part of this mechanical seal in a pump?

    How the stationary part of the seal is rotating with the rotary face? can you please explain that?

    • @totallyseals4967
      @totallyseals4967  3 года назад +1

      Hi there. The stationary is not rotating. To make it clearer you can see our logo on the top of the stationary and it does not move.

    • @rajatk7633

      @@totallyseals4967 yeah but it looks like the half part (end part of stationary face )of it is rotating in the animation

    • @totallyseals4967
      @totallyseals4967  3 года назад

      It does look like it but it’s not. There’s a reflection from the rotary face. The stationary face is one piece so no part of it is moving. Hope that helps.

    Sir, How Can we measure the size of a mechanical seal And in general what are the different sizes of a mechanical seal? Please reply me.

    • @websitedesigner7158
      @websitedesigner7158 2 года назад

      Well ,am not an expert on this subject. With this caveat , let me try to answer you . A seal is measured by internal diameter, external diameter and the height .

    • @websitedesigner7158
      @websitedesigner7158 2 года назад

      To this,there as many seal sizes as there are different shaft diameters. Good luck

      There’s a thin layer of the fluid your pumping between the rotating and fixed surface. Look up pipe plans because there’s a lot of different ways you can do it.

      The layer is around one micrometer thick but it varies between applications and tolerances

    Relation between mechanical seal , gland and stuffing box

    • @jeevunvethanayagam6536
      @jeevunvethanayagam6536 2 года назад

      Stuffing box is a seal to stop leaks for a rotating or sliding shaft. Gland is a type of stuffing box seen in taps and also in some boats. Mechanical seal is a different sealing system that was introduced more recently.

    • @marcuslee2026
      @marcuslee2026 Год назад

      The mechanical seal is normally set inside the stuffing box (back in the day people literally used to stuff a box with all sorts of stuff to prevent leaking). The gland is an additional part that "locks" the mechanical seal in place. Think of it like putting leftover in a tubaware. The food is the mechanical seal, the tubaware is the stuffing box, and the lid that goes on top of everything is the gland to keep everything in place.
