Imo Jannik has still to learn to manage well his health and energies. For instance, as he was feeling off since the morning, he shouldn't have accepted the long rallies in the first set and search earlier for variety in his game (as he did after the medical break). Anyway, it's a process, a very important one, even for Nole it took some time. Kudos to Daniil that made it count the fact that he didn't play his previous match, but, as he knows, with Carlitos is going to be a whole different story.

Im happy to hear Meddy's shoulder issue is resolving- that is good news cos his serving has been horrible for 12mo. I want him back where it is a weapon not a liability and where he is another #1 contender.
To me it was as clear as day that Sinner was sick. Sick means you're neither fully functioning mentally or physically

Just to clarify about the 'dizziness': Sinner said in the press conference that he did not felt well the previous night and in the morning (indeed, he was late at the training session) and that this became more evident when the fatigue started to arrive. He also said that Medvedev deserved to win. I'm just reporting what he said when asked :)
Also, the 10 minutes was not an MTO but a 'medical assessments' which in the slams and in the ATP/WTA rules does not actual have a time limit.

Props to Medvedev for showing resilience and getting past the finish line despite being dominated by Sinner the last 10 months or so. The “RUUUUUUNE” cheer began innocently- I’ve heard it at tons of Rune matches against tons of opponents (Ruud matches as well, for what it’s worth). But Djokovic decided to make it a thing, and when the crowd feels hostility from a player, they give the hostility right back. This is not a Djokovic-specific thing, it’s a universal truth of player/crowd dynamics.

And it was a Medical Assessment, the physio took him off court because he didn't think he looked like he could play. Totally accept Sinner needs to work on endurance in long matches but this was an outlier. Criticising him for not having his legs or not playing inventively is really unfair in this context, he somehow forced a 5th set which didn't look likely earlier in the match.

It’s definately something he can work on going forward. Yet in my assessment the forehand inconsistency should be for him, atleast to some degree, a persisting trade off for that extreme next gen technique of his. I hope I’m wrong.

Thanks. Wouldn't call the match epic, either. Agree on all the points you make regarding room for improvement. I do want to point out that it looks to me like Sinner has lost muscle mass since Australia-Rotterdam-Miami. And you don't have to take it from me because he said as much before Roland Garros, after he'd been sick and had the hip injury. Don't think he has had a chance to rebuild that mass; there's been no time. He was well-prepared up through Miami for the very top levels of the increasingly demanding game, but he is not at the moment. We'll see if he's able to build back up. And I also want to add that mentally he has had a lot going on -- realizing a lifelong dream by becoming World #1 for the very first time; a break up of a long-term relationship followed incredibly swiftly by a new one. These things his don't explain most of his on-court vulnerabilities, but they could contribute to mental fatigue and the lack of creativity you cited. After all, these "kids" are just that - young and trying to figure it out as they go along.

He was off in the US Open, the French Open, and Wimbledon, but what about the Australian Open? His preparation was fine then. Then you say that the first set with Medvedev cost him dearly. But he was ill well before the match. Have you listened to the interview? Personally, from Monte Carlo on, he has had a series of problems: his hip, the illness, and now the illness again. I don't know what to say, but I don't think it's Medvedev. A well-fit Jannik doesn't mind going on long rallies with him. He has shown this many times.

I think the biggest reason is that it's on grass. Sinner doesn't trust himself on grass and on clay the way he does on hardcourt nowadays. He hasn't learned to yet. Clay and grass are his weaknesses because they don't have the grip of hardcourt and various other reasons. I hope he'll return to his invincibility that we saw earlier this year once he gets back on a hardcourt. I hope he keeps his trend of not making the same big mistakes in matches twice going, because if he does he'll have both clay and grass figured out completely by next year against the best rivals (Alcaraz, Djokovic, Medvedev, Zverev).

  • @MA-rq6ie
    @MA-rq6ie 2 месяца назад +9

The lack of creativity is the main issue, not the physicality and let me explain why. There has never been a player that does every part of tennis for a perfect 10 (2015-2016 Novak is the closest but he also had some small gaps in his game). So if Jannik is not as fit as Daniil that is fine because Medvedev is by far the best player on tour when it comes to long rallies. The issue with Medvedev is that he also lacks in other departments and that is what you have to exploit. Novak for example does these things on purpose, he gets "creative and disruptive" in many ways just to throw opponents game off (assuming the opponent has better groundstrokes on that day). To Alcaraz it comes more naturally, he just enjoys playing a versatile game. Jannik today basically decided to play long, gruelling rallies with the best player on tour in that area and he lost in 5. Its like playing forehand to forehand against Berretini and after losing a tight game people comment that you need to improve your forehand...I think Sinner is definitely not as versatile naturally as Carlos so he needs to figure out tactics before the match when he is playing against the best of the best when it comes to groundstrokes. Like Gill said, against 98% of the tour he can just play a groundstroke game and easily win but in those 2% of matches he needs tactics. As of now, Sinner is an automated version of Novak. He plays everything very similarly to Djokovic but once it doesnt work the system still keeps the same thing, unlike Nole who changes as soon as he realises it, nowadays even before the match itself.
All of that being said, I want to share my final thoughts about Medvedev vs Alcaras match. Medvedev so far showed better serve, return and groundstrokes, making him the logical favourite. But unlike Sinner, I think Carlos will force Meddy out of the zones he likes and wilk try to play on his own terms. Doesnt mean Alcaras will win, just means it wont be the way Medvedev likes it and it wont be as physical as this match was.

He has not handled the pressure of being #1 and a grand slam champion. His tactics were terrible, getting into rallies with Med, allowing him to get in a groove. You can’t point to Meds pace because even on a lot of attackable balls, Sinner played conservatively most of the match. Sinner played nervous from the beginning, and the nerves can cause sickness. To me Sinner was serving better for most of the match, while Daniil was not as good or perhaps due to Sinners ROS, but did great in rallies, defense which seemed to just wear down Sinner and Daniil was the more fit player that day.
Always had some question marks on Sinners endurance, most matches he has won were blowouts with some easy draws, while getting tougher draws like in use 23 or here really tests his fitness, but this is grass, and it's Medvedev, who did get owned by many of the drop shots. Rare physical match for grass and still unexpected. Sinenr was still a bit underwhelming, while Daniil was close to peaking.

  • @jodymckinniss3710

Couple of things. I'm disappointed for Sinner, only because I really, really thought he had a shot this year, and as good as he is, I think he deserves a Wimbledon title.
That, and I can't stand the idea of Novak getting yet another title. I thought Sinner had the chance of actually beating him this year if he (Novak) gets that far. So now it's up to Alcaraz, I guess, because I really don't see Med winning that, and here's why.
First, let me admit that I've been underwhelmed to say the least by Alcaraz's performances. He's won, yes, but in every single match there have been periods of lack of focus and discipline that have cost him sets, and in the case of Tiafoe, almost cost him the match. If there's one real area in his game that I think he needs to improve, it's the ability to focus and stay locked in for an entire match. I'm not saying I expect his level to never dip. I just mean I expect him to keep the focus, to reign himself in when he's going walk-about, to not let it go on for an entire set or two. Even Novak has dips in his levels, but they are very brief, a game or two at most.
That having been said, he has way, way too many weapons that he can bring to bear against Medvedev, and he's not physically ill. Sinner said in his press conference after the match that he hadn't really slept the night before and that he hadn't been feeling well. Of course you're not going to be able to play your best tennis on little or no sleep, especially if you're sick. So in that regard, Med got lucky, I think. And I think part of the reason that Sinner wasn't as "creative", and why his running forehand was such a liability in this match, was simply that he was tired. We don't think as clearly, our decision-making slows, and our reflexes slow with sleep deprivation. Honestly, the fact that he was able to come back and take it to five is amazing, really, when you consider it in the context of a sleepless night and physical illness. I can make the argument that it actually makes the case that he's more fit than you're giving him credit for. Oh, and one last thing. Sinner had a hellacious draw, and Med got a walk in the park draw by comparison, including a retirement by Dimi, so of course he's fresher, even excluding illness.
Alcaraz, while a bit unfocused at times, is going to run Med all around the court, I think. He's got way, way too much variety. Med isn't going to be able to get into the kind of rhythm he was able to get into today by exploiting Sinner's fatigue. I can guarantee you that Carlos is going to rush the net a lot more than Jannik did, and he's going to throw in dropshots and other things to get Med out of sync and on the move.
I think maybe Med takes a set if Carlos has one of his periods where he takes a stroll in his mind, but I just can't see him winning. Carlos has way too many tools, and he isn't afraid to use them, especially when he feels his back is against the wall. I'm predicting Alcaraz in four sets.

just that Sunner crushed Novak. Novak did not even have a break point. So even if Novak had been healthy Sinner would have won a close match. use some brains. here the match was super close 5 setter@@Adaobieistyping

Sinner has stamina issue ever since French Open. In this match Sinner began to struggle in set 2, worsen in set 3, better in set 4 while Medvedev touched physical bottom. Medvedev recovered in set 5 while Sinner was still struggling.
Sinner looked pale in the match and gasped frequently, even had blood oxygen level test in set 2.
If Sinner does not solve his stamina issue, he stands no chance against Alcaraz or even Djokovic.

I didn't see the match, but was curious about the result, and this seemed like a pretty damned good analysis, Gill. Your comments about Sinner lacking creativity, and being linear and predictable in his game resonated with me. More colloquially put, Sinner can be boring.

Too bad for Jannik. It’s bad luck when players lose matches when they’re not feeling 💯 percent. But good on Medvedev for persevering. It wasn’t easy, but he got the job done. ✅ Impressive from him defending his SF run from last year. Looking forward to the SF’s !

Sinner said he was feeling better in the 5th which is a little odd as he seemed to lack focus, desire, confidence..... in that set. Glad Mededev won as he came to the net more, Sinner winning Wimbledon with a lack of volleys might be a less desirable outcome for the game/tournament.It wasn't an epic, hopefully the Medvedev/Alcatraz semi will be!
