That's true, if you know what the problem is - but at the time, I had no idea what of the many things it could be, so took the whole thing out to dismantle and test. Learned a lot in the process, so it wasn't a wasted afternoon...
Thanks for this vid! I have a F07 5 series GT and recently had both air springs replaced, but now have a chassis error code which reads that the timing is slow for the compressor filling the air springs! Any ideas what this could be down to? Thanks in advance!

Hi Mike, Great video, I have the same problem. An OBD2 code points to the discharge valve persistently open. I have a 2019 g31, is that the same as yours, to check the air compressor is the same! Struggling to find the correct discharge valve for the compressor!
Hi Mike. Superb video and really useful. I have been experiencing the same issue and as a result of your excellent research and demonstration, I've ordered a new solenoid for my F11. I'll check back in once I've installed it and let you know how I got on. Thank you!
Cheers mate very useful video. In the video there was a relay switch, where was that located? I’m having issues with my suspension and just trying to figure out what could be. I’m not hearing the compressor at all.
How did you close the compressor unit? Did you use loctite on the screws? As it looks like they had some on them from factory. And did you use some kind of sealant on the o rings? Thanks for your video!
Hello! Yesterday i replaced two airbags and still bags deflates, driver side lose faster. Before changing bags, it took 14 hours till bags deflated. What you think could be wrong?
Hi Tad, from the research I did for my own issue, I think a blown 40amp fuse would indicate there's a lot of resistance in the compressor such that it has drawn more than 40amps to operate at some point. Other people have found that this was due to the compressor having become very wet - and this causes resistance when compressing. I would suggest removing the compressor (as per my video), and dismantling it to see if that's true. It should be obvious by the condition inside that this is the case. If not this, then some other form of resistance such as the distribution solenoids being clogged or not opening properly. If wet, thoroughly dry it (and the drying beads) and check seals before dismantling. If it's this, then it might not even cost you £25 - just the time. If it seems to be an issue with the distribution solenoid, then replace that (£35 on ebay I think)... Good luck!!
I just replaced mine 10 mins ago with a new one from germany. I found the orignail part code . I have tje old one and will like test the release valve and if it is the case , replace tje same and keep it as a spare . WILL IN Dublin
Yes, I guess I can't have done - for some reason I thought it was (could have sworn it had Wabco on the casing) but must just be a very close copy. It does have a few design differences as you can see at 12:07. Works perfectly though. Got it on ebay.
Can anyone help me locate the fuse. I did the above fix and compressor turned on when I fit it back on but now it’s not turning on at all. The suspension button is also flashing. BMW g12
Hi, I'm hoping you see this and can hopefully give me some advice. If you rather do offline, happy to exchange emails. I have a 530d touring 2012, noticed the rear suspension would lower itself and soon as then car on it would go back to normal. This wasn't every time, could be a week but then it happened again. I bit the bullet and took to BMW, who told me I need the air compression replacing, costing over £1k to fit. I paid it, felt great but then days after, it was low again. I've contacted them, there saying it was faulty and needed replacing and there must be a new fault now. It all sounds a bit fishy to me, can you help me / guide me, in the hope I want to prove the fix was more than likely the solenoid? Hope you see this message. Thanks
I'm having an issue with my 5 series f11 at the moment. The issue is that the suspension is stuck high and doesn't goes down,I can't hear the compressor running. Any suggestions please?
That sounds like either a stuck release solenoid (like my issue) or a controller issue (which I’m have no experience of). I would suggest replacing the release solenoid as I did - or at least dismantling the compressor to see if you can test it…
I just did this procedure, but after reinstalling the compressor, it only switches on for 1-2 seconds and then shuts off. Do you know what could be the reason?
Does it lose ALL air? Does it lose the same amount from each side? Does it inflate again? I'm not a BMW mechanic but happy to share some thoughts if you can give further symptoms...
@@mikeroberts2221 cheers all sorted it was only losing air when driving found out it was a very minute leak in compression fitting. Many thanks for replying.
Been running perfectly for 2 weeks now without any suspension issues - so this diagnosis and fix was spot on.
Very useful. I did mine in 1h - you dont have to drop the whole pump - just release the plastic air drier and fit the solenoid to it and then replace.

Just overhauled my 2006 530 xi wagon rear suspension. Great job describing the system, how to get to it and your fix.
Thanks, John!
This is brilliant. I have the exact same issue with my 5 series and its taken me until now to work it out ! Saved me £1500 - thank you.
That's great to hear - thanks for commenting and I'm glad it saved you money like it did me! (replying from my other youtube account)
What year is your BMW please?
Excellent video as my air suspension on my e61 has just started to play up by suddenly losing air whenever it feels like it. Thanks.
BMW should recall and fix this common problem
Great video. I fear I have the same problem - only mine occurs when driving over a lot of bumps or potholes.
Fantastic video Mike. I'm going to try it tomorrow.

On the touring you should jack on the plate to the rear of the diff, the saloon doesnt have that plate 👍

In the fuse box located in boot where battery is. I didn’t need to replace this, just bought it in case
You catch a glimpse of it’s location at 2:12 (behind the battery)

What about the relay? Did you have to replace it with a new one when reconnecting the pump, do they not blow??
I did purchase a new relay just in case, but didn't need to fit it. So I have a spare in the boot for if that ever blows (which it didn't)

Hi great video, do you have to disconnect the battery to remove the compressor unit?
Probably too late, but no, you can just disconnect a fuse inside the trunk.
@@ijuhan9302 which fuse?
@@mikey73 It should be 40A fuse with number 182. There is a paper chart inside the fusebox with all the fuses and corresponding numbers.
