NES Controllers: WHAT IS BEST?

  • This is a pretty dumb video admittedly. looking at it closer on video I think the Hudson soft controller's turbo is fast enough to exceed some sort of sprite limit on the NES.
    Still interested to hear if anybody has a good lead on another controller worth checking out.
    One obvious negative against the Honey Bee not mentioned, is the cord length which is maddeningly short. luckily AES controller db15 extensions are readily available and compatible.

    My favorite pads, recently, are the 8Bitdo 2.4Ghz controllers. I wasn't a fan of the NES30, since they botched the diagonals (pressing down on Contra, would cause your character to run diagonally, and often get killed). The N3 version, not only fixed that, but also has much improved buttons (no longer in the diamond SNES style), the dongles are smaller, included for free, and the best part is that latency is almost non-existent. The buttons are nice and responsive. I also love the AVS system. That, and the Analogue Super Nt + Mega Sg, are my favorite FPGA cart based systems. I also have a Pocket on order, so I hope that also turns out well.
    Oh, and I also like the newer designed SNES30 controllers, called the SN30, with the same improvements as with their N30, (2.4Ghz). As well as the Genesis equivalent, the M30. It's also perfect for the Analogue Mega Sg, with the menu button, and SMS pause/reset buttons mapped to the pad. I wish 8bitdo would also make Neo•Geo, TG16/PCE (not the mini), and 9 Din classic controller (ColecoVision/Atari 2600/7800/Commodore) supported controllers.

      I didn't even think about going new. Would be nice to lose the cords, but Im terrible at keep controllers charged. I used some new Saturn ones for a few days then dead... and I ended up going back to my og corded pad.

      @@THELEGENDARYK2 Yeah, that's definitely a legitimate concern. I haven't tried the Saturn wireless yet, by Retro-Bit, IIRC, but the new 8Bitdo wireless controllers can go for aeround 30-40 hrs on a charge. I just bought one of those cheap RAVPower 6 port USB chargers, for $15, and it's perfect for my 2xNES, 2xSNES, 2xGEN pads. As long as I plug at least one controller from each, I'm good, and during this past year I haven't been playing any local co-op, sadly, like many others. Anyway, cool video. I'm always interested in what other gamers like for their controllers.

    The only experience I have is with the original nes pad and what I’ve been using for the last few years, the Hyperkin Cadet . It’s surprising good for the price, long cord and gives that nostalgic feel and is actually more comfortable over the original.

    Nothing beats the original NES controller for precision. The NES Advantage was the best arcade stick on the market when it came out and to be honest I still like it. The controller works perfectly well with turbo for games like Commando, 1943, Gradius and Contra.

    NES has limit of number of sprites in the same line. You cannot fill horizontally a line with sprites.

      Yeah, its funny watching it after the fact it's way more obvious thab with the naked eye. Sort of a facepalm moment, but thats a damn fine controller

    7:28 Programmers experienced with limited platforms put a limit on bullet spawning or other items / enemies spawning. Once a bullet hits something, it is destroyed in memory, allowing another to be spawned. Going closer to a wall and shooting it makes it look like you are shooting faster since bullets spawn and die faster, and the limit isn't reached. Depending on how the game is programmed, each of those items / bullets / enemies check for collision every frame. The bullets update position too. Of course, programmers find ways to improve performance. Look at Recca.

    • @THELEGENDARYK2
      @THELEGENDARYK2  3 года назад

      Recca is pretty exceptional. I figured that what must be happening when I went back to the video. It was harder tell i was firing manually that much slower to the naked eye. On video its super obvious that im not even close to the Honey Bee turbo lol

      @@THELEGENDARYK2 Also, if I didn't make it clear from my comment, the more objects onscreen, the more CPU time or other processing units need to spend updating them or moving them around in memory. I know the NES also had some clear limitations like only a certain number of sprites per line. It must have been wonderful to stress over the cycles a certain command takes.
      Do you think of the turbo button as cheating? I know there are certain gamers that do. I say give my hands a rest in Raiden and put less strain on the mechanisms.

    I have that Ascii Stick 2088 as well and its super nice but my main gripe is - sadly it does not work with all the Famicom games. There is no DB 0 signal wired on the DB 15 expension port, sadlly some games except a DB 0 signal = they wont start with a controller hooked up through the DB 15 port. The most prominent example is the Famicom version of Battletoads => does not work with a DB 15 controller :(

    An arcade stick would be the best, as for pads the best one I have ever tried is the competition pro from Happ....(yes, HApp controls used to make pads for consoles) then again this is only my opinion since I don't care much about the d-pad really, I can play just fine with almost anything after being accostumed with Megadrive 3 button pad, my main concern is the action buttons and the comp-pro has big slightly concave buttons which I like much better than both the old NES pad and dogbone/SNES pad buttons.

      Dude! I appreciate this comment wasn't aware of the Happ pads, just bought one on ebay, for 20bucks to check it out. NES is such a beast. I dont think it's ever been out of my rotation of decks hooked up to the tv

    Sansui Joycard SSS. It's the same as that Hudson red one, just a different (better?) color scheme. It has round, comfortable corners and turbo switches for A and B that are easily flickable without screwing up your game much. I don't use the headphones, but I guess that feature is nice. I found mine at a garage sale for a dollar. I've only seen one "in the wild".

    • @WhatsOnMyShelf
      @WhatsOnMyShelf 3 года назад +1

      @@THELEGENDARYK2 I just measured it. It's two inches shy of 8ft. Is that long enough for you? I believe the controller was released in the USA. I've seen the box online before and it looked like it has all the correct markings of an official licensed in the US product (the nerve that any company makes you do that).
      I'll also add that I rubber band the audio-in cord to the controller cable so it doesn't bob around

      @@WhatsOnMyShelf that's way better than this Famicom Hudson soft controller. Its only about 3 ft.
      Im cool with rapid fire, especially if its a game that requires constant shooting like my Twin Cobra PCB. However Mega Man games it is kind of a skill to get those shots off fast in just the right spot without using too much bar. Wonder if the MM speedrunner community allow it
