- In this episode of MountainLore, we tell the tale of old Joe, a Kentucky moonshiner whose nocturnal activities on a sacred burial mound awaken the ghost of an ancient Native American shaman. As Joe tends to his still, he is confronted not only by the spectral guardian of the land but also by the spirit of Elias, a fellow moonshiner from the past, ensnared by the same curse that now threatens Joe.

My grandmother was from Missouri, born in 1910, to a Scots-Irish family. She told me about "banshees" (which was scary enough), and she also told me about "haints". She told me a story that her older brother, and maybe other folks had been "hainted" (heard a haint), and that all the kids in the holler were scared that they would be next to hear one. She thought it was funny, but folks would take that stuff serious I guess. I'm in my 60's now, and I miss the old folks. Thanks for this awesome story. It really brought back happy memories...

I'm a new subscriber and I had a similar experience with my cannabis patch, but instead of the shaman threatening me with a curse he became a bogart and I had to ban him from my patch! Lol good story!
