  • A full unabridged audiobook of the classic gothic story, "The Haunted House", by Charles Dickens - complete with sounds and visuals.
The Haunted House was a story series published in 1859 for the weekly periodical All the Year Round. Originally featuring guest authors' writings for various chapters, this version focusses on the story of John, a man whose health has required him to take some time in the country. He finds himself a tenant of a much-avoided and ill-reputed house and calls upon acquaintances of his to help dispel the ghoulish myths surrounding it. But do the ghosts reside in the house itself, or inside its occupants?
Dickens began a tradition of Christmas publications with "A Christmas Carol" in 1843 and his Christmas stories soon became a national institution. The Haunted House was his 1859 offering.
    Read by Elliot Fitzpatrick.

I am glad someone can see good quality in lesser known books by authors that are "over done"by the audio book channels. I would like to see you do "The washer woman" by Hans Christian Andersen. Fantastic narrator.

Thank you for this upload of an interesting story by a great author.
I love a classic haunted house story.
I just don't find enjoyment in the popular "creepypasta" of today. It just tries too hard, and is too amateur-ish for my tastes. I'm 42 and have been reading all my life, so I have no taste for drivel. I'm sure there exist somewhere some good "pasta", but i can't be bothered to sift thru the dustbin just to find a sixpence.
    Okay, rant over.
Dickens had a golden sense of humor that never fails to tickle me with hilarious situations and peculiar characters.
Thank you for this quality audiobook. I much enjoy your narration style and cadence. You have a good grasp of your material.
New subscriber, excited to have found this gem of a channel. I wish you the best of luck with your channels success.

Many thanks for your kind words! It’s true, there’s a certain pantomime element to the real gothic stories of this era that has been somewhat replaced with gore. But I’m looking forward to finding many more stories such as these!

Very enjoyable. Your light tones ease us into the detail common in Dickens' tales , that we are unused to in modern writing . And so good to hear..as was originally the usual way of encountering his works, stories outside the usual clutch. I look firward to listening to your past other and future offerings.

Thank you for uploading this interesting story. It's not one that I had even heard of before, and it embraces an unexpected range of moods. I'm familar with Dickens' comically grotesque ghost stories, of the 'Gabriel Grubb' variety, and his serious, straightforward ghost stories, such as 'The Signalman', but this moved from entertainingly-presented everyday life to ...well, I had better say no more, for fear of 'spoilers'.
The reader is truly excellent, and a pleasure to listen to.

Hard to believe that this was penned by the same hand as that wonderful story "The Signalman". I struggled to force myself to stay to the end and when I reached it I wished I had not bothered. Beautifully read but not worth the read.

Yes, so different from “The Signalman”, which you can also hear on this channel! This is more of a circumspection into what kind of ghosts live inside of us all and the effect that has. Dickens uses the same technique in “A Christmas Carol” to wonderful effect. Thanks for listening ❤️

I have to agree. It tried my patience sorely. Probably was not in the mood for this kind of rambling, chatty, gently humorous kind of story.
      Unfortunately it irritated me😁.

Well said. My thoughts exactly. However, I decided to bail half way through. This story was a tree sprouting many branches, but never reaching any height. Kind of resembles the modern day soap opera. My apologies soap opera fans. Anyhow, thanks for posting and Happy Holidays to all.

I agree with you about the murder of crows. 🐦‍⬛I used to live in a valley below Mt. Rainier that was traditionally a agriculturally prolific location, due to the silts & volcano ash that fed the land with abundant health, so the deciduous trees were over 75-100’ tall; & these beautiful trees would house hundreds of crows that would fly across the valley, nesting at dusk. Once I even had the pleasure to witness a few flying over my head, and they were so close, I could hear their wings’ beat. It was magical. I love going back to see their majesty of flight when I am there. 🐦‍⬛🌳🐦‍⬛🍃🐦‍⬛🪺🐦‍⬛🌳🐦‍⬛🌳🐦‍⬛

Am I correct in thinking that this is a story where there's a collection of stories inside it? Perhaps each person has a haunting experience?
That's the only way I can make sense of this reading. It feels like the beginning is there, and part of the middle, but no conclusion.
