▶【Synopsis】Set during the Ming Dynasty, the story revolves around the romance between General Xu Lingyi and the concubine's daughter Shiyiniang that starts from an arranged marriage. Despite being born with a low status, Luo Shiyiniang is extremely assertive and believes that a woman's vision should not be limited to the household. She hopes to rely on her embroidery skills as a ticket to freedom. However, the once esteemed Luo family is in a state of decline. Hoping to save the clan through a marriage alliance, Shiyiniang is selected to become the wife of Yongping Duke and great general Xu Lingyi. Things were not easy for Shiyiniang due to the Xu family's biases towards her. Nonetheless, she manages to win over their trust through her optimism and sincerity. Shiyi needed that from Lingyi, he's been so open to her amd she has not. She needed to see how much she hurt him to be able to properly fix it.

Y'all take his side because he was "hurt", but he hates it when she apologises and he hates it when she says thank you, and when she tries to take care of him he thinks it's all out of gratitude or guilt. Fussier than a baby. What is she supposed to do? He's a big man but she's the one having to fend all for herself. And he knows it. And he's still offended so easily.

I just really love the round archways along the paths they walk and Shiyi's round window, so graceful and beautiful. Their courtyards are beautiful too. Makes me want an inner courtyard like that with lots of flowers and trees.
The cold in those days was really something. If someone catches a cold and they don't see a physician, it becomes incurable.
It’s true though, unfortunately. Without the antibiotics that we take for granted today, a cold can easily transform into pneumonia. Once that infection gets into the lungs and then into the bloodstream and turn into sepsis, there’s not much they can do.

This is a good drama after so many dramas that are all about emperors and power struggles. This is more realistic in terms of love relationships, and still has the power plays among courtiers, with only references to "his Majesty" from time to time.
Wallace and Seven are a great team. They are the leaders of this drama and its great to see them working out their differences without being against each other. Everyone is waiting to see them fulfill their love relationship, but whatever happens in between is so interesting and just allows them to prove their qualities and values to each other along the way.
It is more realistic when you do not see men and women flying frequently. It is so rare to find Chinese historical dramas without people flying over rooftops, rivers, forests...

The way that the Marquis is bowing his head when Erniang is scolding her father makes me think he is realizing he might treat his concubines in the same way. He doesn't care much for any of them and only married them out of convenience. Like Shiyi's father the Marquis is currently paying more attention to his legal wife than his other. Sure they might have their own agendas in regards to their relationship to him, but they were only following the role that society has prescribed to them. If none of the women have the Marquis' love or attention they must find a way to carve out a path for themselves to survive living in the harem.
I really like how the writer and director have made sure we understand how vulnerable women in particular were, where concubines or servants. Yes we love Ling Yi's love for his wife but it means someone loses out.
I don't remember if the captions show this, but kids like Zhun-ge have to call their birth mothers (In Zhun-ge's case, Wen Concubine) "yi-niang", meaning concubine mother. However, they call the legal wife of the household "mu qing", meaning mother.

I feel Lingyi's pain when he told Shiyi that she do not love him, the only feelings she had for him was just guilt and gratitude. That's why she never find him trustworthy. That was so accurate, because from the beginning till that moment, that's was Shiyi's feelings towards Lingyi.!!!
Maybe at first, but she grew to love him sincerely. We saw that progression.

As much as I understand the marquise. He can't be mad at that. They both did not want the marriage. He only agreed for his late wife. I get the trust and wanting the love to be real and not out of guilt or gratitude. But even for him at first it wasn't love. Shiyi does need to regain his trust to bring them back to where they used to be and more. But that was way before they even got married and before Yuanniang passed. He grew to love her just as she is as well.
Knife edge but I can't help smiling. The Chinese and the Irish break out the tea at every opportunity.
Erniang is the most despicable character in the whole show. sure others have hurt Shiyi but she's family and at the beginning tried to maximize benefits for herself at the expense of severely damaging Shiyi's life, but now because she's in a bad place, she shamelessly plays the family card to threaten Shiyi to help her. and she knows she can't threaten others so she blames everything on Shiyi. that's an order of magnitude worse than people like Lianfang which is amazing 'cause Liangfang is already bad enough.

I started to really like the opening and ending songs, Chinese especially from back in the earlier era was very poetic they implemented fully into their songs as well. Translation also did a very nice job to express those words. Overall translation from this series done a great job too. It’s harder to translate the words people used in those era. 💯 for their team. Erniang is really canon fodder. She keeps blaming Shiyi when she need to blame herself. Even if she became Lingyi;s wife Concubine Lingyan would have sinked her faster and had her disgraced and divorced. Lingyi would have just respected her but not fall in love with her who knows she may have tried to harm Zhun smh. If Shiyi married Wang Yu I know she would have survived! She would be that quiet beauty who schemed to teach him a few big fat lessons possibly end up escaping that marriage in secret! Shiyi I hope you explain to Lingyi.

I had to rewatch Dongqing & Linbo like 4 times, the way he embodies gentlemanly behaviour just as the Marquis does, the way her bright & cheeky behaviour is becoming endearing rather than annoying the more time he spends with her. They're so good 😂

Both Ou and Shysi tried to quit XP on surface. But reality both tried to convince other not to leave. typical tactics of master schemer.
What kills me about Lingyi and Shiyi is, the lack of communication is not just on her. For one, she is like what 17/18, she married him at 15 and so it has been 2 to 3 years since they were married. Two, she has never been in a relationship before and don't know what actually saying 'I love you' mean, no less knowing what she is feeling. The only person she has truly loved, is her mother. She cares dearly for her two ladies in waiting. She feels a desperate need towards him and wants to continue building what she and he, initially started to build when she stabbed him. She don't know how to get that back.
He is several years older than her, at least 8 to 10, and even though he has been in relationships with other women, he has never been in love, either. In my humble opinion, someone needs to say the words 'I love you' and he should be the one. She keep say "I'm sorry' and 'thank you' for this and that. He is upset, because it seems all she is giving him is gratitude. But he is not giving her anything else to go by so she doesn't know to give him what he need.
Overall - I feel sorry for the females back then. They were so young and going through these adult situations. They were excepted to act like adult when they were still so young.
What are the chances that the word love is something that was actually used in the era where harems were legal? Lots of marriages in those days were marriages of convenience, so love isn't exactly a concept that would have been encouraged. The society they lived in might have taught them that marriage is about obligation, not personal interest. Shiyi didn't even want to get married in the first place, and all the women in Lingyi's harem had their own agenda. Love is a very foreign concept to both of them, unless you count the love of friends and family. I doubt either of them have known much love in their lives, Shiyi was looked down upon for being an illegitimate daughter of the Luo family and Lingyi likely only married those women at the behest of the Grand Madame.

@Molissa Leung then the whole time line of the drama is wrong. They got married a year after her sisters death. Shiyi and Dong Qian went to the temple right before she got married. She said it’s been a year and they still had no clues. They got rid of Linfang because they had the ceremony around the anniversary of her death. That would be a year after they got married. It also can’t be a few months because Danyang got pregnant after Shiyi and the Marquis were married. A pregnancy is closer to 10 months than 9. She gives birth in this episode. So how can it be a few months? It’s around a year.

Yes, it would have been nice, but not everyone feels comfortable saying romantic words.
I probably only ever say "I love you" once to my parents, that was during their birthday after I grow up, went abroad and becoming independent.
Not because I don't love them, but because the weight of those words. I still remember that day, I cried like a baby. I just felt like my mom and dad who I used to think so high and so mighty, why are they suddenly looking old with wrinkles and white hair? I remember all the rebellion acts I ever did in the past, all my wrongdoing towards them.
Even with my boyfriend, I did it months after we get together. I don't know, for me personally, moment when you look to someone's eyes and say words that you keep in your heart, they are sacred moments and sacred words.
And I think me and Shiyi a bit similar, we relied on our logic so often and prefer to depend on ourselves.
Just like her, my mom often scolded me because I said yes to her, but still ended up doing whatever I think is right. Not out of defiance. But it's just the way my brain operates when I have problems. I will map it in my mind, the different solutions with pros and cons, and I decide which solution is the best. But people don't see this thinking process of mine. It's not that I don't want to explain, but too complicated to explain, it will bore you. And when the problem is solved, I would go back to my parents with nicer words, like "oh yeah, I did go there for that, but the person said better do it like ....(my solution)...". That way, it's easier to keep the peace with my parents.
So for people who often relied on logic, their emotional will catch up at a very later time. Because that's what usually happen to me. Long after certain events happened, that are usually involving some kind of emotional response, my response would be delayed sometimes a few seconds, sometimes even a few months. People like us are very good during crisis, because rarely do we get so affected with our emotions. But when the emotions catch up, it would be like torrential flood, that I sometimes cried without even knowing why.
Only one instance that I could remember, when my reaction was so emotional and direct, it was when I was in secondary school, and one delinquent boy in school insulted my parents. That I felt like literally wanting to use the pen on my hand to stab his neck. That's how I know my kryptonite, the lowest of my bottom lines is my parents. Same like Shiyi, her mother is that kryptonite that could blind her and made her reacted emotionally instead of logically.
Otherwise, from where then we get the term "crime in passion"? That is also why there is a rule to prohibit doctor to operate on their family member. Emotion is a wild variable, and we all weigh it in different measure, process it different ways.
At the start of 27:08, Shiyi's final words hit me hard. Women always fall prey to the same miserable fate, however their fate could have been so much different if they were a loving family. I don't understand why Luo Tai Tai felt the legal wife and the concubine had to be enemies. She should have understood better than anyone that being married into a prominent family meant her husband would take in concubines. Those concubines could have helped her share the household burden. All the children should have married happily and they would only strengthen their family during turbulent times. Instead, Concubine Yang (Erniang mom) tried to exacerbate her illness so she would die sooner. Karma in the end bit them both and they died a miserable death for all their sins. Had Luo Tai Tai treated everyone better, her daughter and unborn grandchild might still be alive and she might have lived longer.

This was the saddest episode 😭😭 They really "hit two birds with one stone" worked well. Lets hope the sisters become close and stop scheming against each other.

As much as they were so scheming the Legitimate mother and Concubine Yang I cried for them when they died, even on their deathbeds they were still at it...Really these times were so cruel to women.
I just wish they could talk things through without assuming. Assumptions are the killers of relationships. They have come through so much, the trust is really getting tested. I guess it's that testing that draws us into this story.
And here i was wondering why i survived this drama until this stage, they keep going around each other better just talk it out so as to avoid these meaningless issues

Their is Jealousy and then their is envy .both are bad.but Jealousy is a bith different...if your jealous in good faith, for example you see someone doing better at school it can make motivate you to be better as well...like a competition. But its the envy that is the most evil, because you don't want or feel happy when someone else's life is good. Which leads to hatred and can make you do dangerous things. Lol, anyway, good drama.
