Update: Online servers for both Mario Kart 8 and Splatoon 1 have been in maintenance since March of this year. This means the games haven't been available to play online for about 5 months now. However, as of August 3rd the servers are back online and you can go and play right now! If you're wondering how I uploaded this video during the maintenance period, it's because I recorded the footage for it back in February and didn't get around to editing it until April/May. I think we can all agree the graphics and art direction are jaw dropping for the hardware. I mean MK8 would look impressive on a Xbone or PS4 in 2014, and it runs at 60 FPS on hardware half a generation behind those consoles.

Honestly wouldnt be suprise its cpu got beaten by 32bit arm processors from that time not the mention we already had armv8 (64bit arm cpu usually has 8 cores aand able to run somewhere 2/2.5ghz) and lpddr4 and lpddr4x sorry but wii u already beaten by phone hardware even in its launch year its kinda pathetic really also we already had more powerfull gpus in phones at the time so theres that. And switch hardware literally based on 2011 tegra k1 series (pretty much modified and reshelled nvidia shield hardware) so yeah wii u was pretty much waste of money (especially its price tag 💀) only good thing about it that its gamepad and pro controller (and of course first party games but i dont think we have to mention it)

The fact that you played online in the og mk8, making it the fact that this recorded before March of this year, because now is also impossible to play online in mk8 and splatoon 1 (because the servers are "temporary" down due to the server exploit stuff)
Lol and they were actually temporary. It's kinda unfair how Switch users have to pay for online, while Wii U users race for free. I know Switch has more content and is updated etc but still... Don't get me wrong, U users are lucky and it's best for them but I wish at least Mario Kart was free on the Switch. One free game isn't gonna do much to them in form of loss

I played a lot in 2018 and i was surprised to see so many people still playing online. I played a lot of mk7 in 2020 and it was once again surprising. It's nice to see lobbies still being able to be filled in 2023 but it makes me wonder... how?
I feel like the majority of people that I when up against were families. Maybe they’re still playing because they don’t own switch? Just a guess but it would make sense as the Wii U was more of a family centric console then any other console

Anyways this is a cute little video, it takes me back to when I used to play the original Mario Kart 8 back in 2014, I remember I was really hyped seeing the first reveal trailer in 2013 and seeing all those commercials in 2014 where I finally got the game on my 11th birthday, a day after it's release. Real story of mine: As someone that actually owns a Wii U during the Wii U era I originally wanted to get this game during that time but unfortunately there would be times I would get grounded From playing on My Wii U and punished.... The Wii U games I had during that time were Super Smash Bros 4, Mario Maker OG, new Super Mario Bros U, Super Mario 3D land and some original Wii games I absolutely loved. During that era since no one was able to play games on the Wii U, I legit carried my entire Wii U with me everywhere sometimes so people can get a chance to play the games on the console. Fast forward I would eventually get Mario kart 8 deluxe on my switch and I have played the Wii U version before during the Wii U era and I can say, Mario kart 8 and Mario kart 8 deluxe are absolutely perfect gems! Especially the Wii U version! 💙

Damn bro, I had that but when my parents divorced, I lost Wii Fit U, Mario Maker and Mario Kart 8 due to lack of storage unit when moving out. I am still pissed off to this day because those were my 3 favorite games, now I only have Lego City, Splatoon, Smash Bros. U and Super Mario 3D World.
I remember getting Mario Kart 8 on my Wii U to hype myself up before Smash 4 came out. And one thing i've always remembered was how much I absolutely hated vanilla. The Kooplings taking slots over other Mario characters, the coin item, no battle mode, and most importantly the single item slot, no holding an item behind you and it disappearing from your item slot. I absolutely despised that part most of all since Grand Prix can be cheesy at times with items. Vanilla was probably my least played Mario Kart before the Switch port making the game much more enjoyable to play. I cant believe we're been playing the same Mario Kart for almost 9 years now
I remember when I got my Wii U with Mario Kart 8 pre-installed on christmas, (which was about 7-8 years ago.) I can't believe we are still playing the same game since 2014 lmao. Also even though it's been 7-8 years my Wii U is still working properly.

Even thought I never owned a WiiU (I recently skipped directly to the Switch straight from the Wii) I never knew you are allowed to hold 1 item in the WiiU.
I don't miss the annoying Fire Hopping and only having one item one bit. The game was really good back then, but Deluxe improved on it so much even without the Booster pack.
I bought the Wii U veeeery late into its cycle, some months before the switch released, it's the last console I ever bought from an electronics store and I only bought it because it had an playable demo of Mario kart 8 in the store 😅
I believe the Wii U version runs at 720p along with having washed out colors (problem with many Wii U games) though I did put a filter to make the colors slightly more vibrant. Still looks really good though I and I think most people wouldn’t be able to tell the difference between 8 and 8DX graphics unless they took a closer look.

Wow I remember I hated Mario Kart 8 delux before booster course because i thought it was basically the same as Wii U. But now looking back they are so different
I sadly missed out on the Wii U DLC packs before the Wii U eShop shut down so I only have the original 8 cups and then the other two darked out… mocking me.
I think it was done that they separated matchmaking between people with the DLC and without. I wasn’t able to get the DLC until 2016 and it was really annoying not being able to play with content creators or with friends because I didn’t own it. I’m glad they fixed that with 8DX.
I still play original Mario kart 8 (started playing 2013) as I believe it is good enough. I don’t need to spend 300 dollars buying a switch and spend another 60 getting Mario kart 8 deluxe. In my opinion Mario kart 8 is good enough as it is.
I was able to talk with him recently and found out that he's being going for Max VR across every MK game (MK7, MK8, MK8DX). He started in 2020 and finally got it last month. It really is quite cool to see his dedication

The Kooplings taking slots over other Mario characters, the coin item, no battle mode, and most importantly the single item slot, no holding an item behind you and it disappearing from your item slot. I absolutely despised that part most of all since Grand Prix can be cheesy at times with items. Vanilla was probably my least played Mario Kart before the Switch port making the game much more enjoyable to play.

I remember when I got my Wii U with Mario Kart 8 pre-installed on christmas, (which was about 7-8 years ago.) I can't believe we are still playing the same game since 2014 lmao. Also even though it's been 7-8 years my Wii U is still working properly.
Crazy how I was playing the Wii U version in 2nd grade and still playing it in my senior year of high school. Great game

Funny thing about the bacon guy, he actually messaged me on Twitter after the video. He said the part of me calling him a loser was funny and he was just overall really chill to talk to. Quite different to how he plays MK8 I guess

As a switch gamer, I still play Wii U to this day, I play SSB4, wish i had all 7 DLC, but hey, I have Ultimate with both Fighter Passes.
I really hope they don't shut down the servers and actually patch the Mario Kart 8 and Splatoon 1 servers

Even thought I never owned a WiiU (I recently skipped directly to the Switch straight from the Wii) I never knew you are allowed to hold 1 item in the WiiU.
Yeah it sucked, but the game was still great
I don't miss the annoying Fire Hopping and only having one item one bit. The game was really good back then, but Deluxe improved on it so much even without the Booster pack.

I bought the Wii U veeeery late into its cycle, some months before the switch released, it's the last console I ever bought from an electronics store and I only bought it because it had an playable demo of Mario kart 8 in the store 😅
I don't remember the Wii u graphics being this flushed out
I believe the Wii U version runs at 720p along with having washed out colors (problem with many Wii U games) though I did put a filter to make the colors slightly more vibrant. Still looks really good though I and I think most people wouldn’t be able to tell the difference between 8 and 8DX graphics unless they took a closer look.

Apparently they are still left in the code for 8DX, so yeah it’s a bit odd why they didn’t at least give the option to play on the tracks

Wow I remember I hated Mario Kart 8 delux before booster course because i thought it was basically the same as Wii U. But now looking back they are so different
I sadly missed out on the Wii U DLC packs before the Wii U eShop shut down so I only have the original 8 cups and then the other two darked out… mocking me.
I think it was done that they separated matchmaking between people with the DLC and without. I wasn’t able to get the DLC until 2016 and it was really annoying not being able to play with content creators or with friends because I didn’t own it. I’m glad they fixed that with 8DX.

I still play original Mario kart 8 (started playing 2013) as I believe it is good enough. I don’t need to spend 300 dollars buying a switch and spend another 60 getting Mario kart 8 deluxe. In my opinion Mario kart 8 is good enough as it is.

I was able to talk with him recently and found out that he's being going for Max VR across every MK game (MK7, MK8, MK8DX). He started in 2020 and finally got it last month. It really is quite cool to see his dedication
