I haven't even started my undergrad in physics yet but this was SO HELPFUL!! I cant wait to eventually get my PhD in Astrophysics(hopefully at the University of Cambridge)!! Thank You!
I am currently a Junior in the History department at the University of West Florida. I absolutely love Royal history, because royalty not only is just like the common person in their struggles in life, their mistakes have much more disastrous consequences. Your video actually was a video suggested for a Junior Seminar module for my class, so that's how I found your channel. Thank you for taking your time to discuss graduate school.
I'm really glad that I stumbled on your video. This is exactly what I've been looking for and you explain the Masters portion so well. I never understood if you needed one or not. But you also give great examples on how to still get the experience you need. I'm in my first year. I'm going to start my 2nd quarter in April. I'm going to Community College right now. And I plan and hope to go to either UW Seattle or WSU for the masters and Ph.D. I'm planning on becoming a Clinical Psychologist with an emphasis on Children and Transition youth. My passion truly lies there. I want to help the people struggle in that period of their life and I want to help intervene early so the rest of their life isn't so hard. I really want to be the help and support that I needed. I'm still nervous about my capabilities but I know that I can do it. Seriously though. Thank you for all of your help!
I discovered your videos just this morning and I've already watched a bunch, so thank you for all this insight, Kaelyn! I'm currently pursuing grad school in the Netherlands, hoping to specialize in Cultural Anthropology, and the information and perspectives you bring to the table have been very helpful. All the best with all your future endeavors :)
Thank you so much for this video. It’s cleared out so many questions I had about how to prepare for graduate school!! Keep on doing this great job please
Amazingly informative video, appreciate when someone just gives you their experience and the insider info they dont tell you when applying. I just started my MA, very excited!
This is so helpful! I'm going into my sophomore year of my undergraduate degree and want to make sure I am going through school with grad school applications in mind
This video was great! I just finished my first year and did all my preparatory research on the schools and programs I'm planning on applying to, as well as their requirements. So now going onto preparing myself to be the most competitive applicant I can be for graduate programs and your video was so helpful!
Funnily enough, I think that “Peasant Life in Medieval Europe” class sounds amazing. I am a junior majoring in English with a minor in Medieval Studies who is thinking of getting a Master’s in Medieval Studies. I’m very intimidated by the idea of graduate school, and I’m also…I’m very unsure of a lot right now. I have a little over a year until I graduate and that’s very frightening to me. Being a non-traditional student, my college experience has been very different, and very much a “keep my head down, do the work, and get through the semester” kind of experience. I’m a mom of 2 teenage boys with a full time job as well as a full time college student. The idea of attending the office hours and extra lectures is very daunting to me because I simply don’t have the time. That being said, I shall try this coming semester because I think it’s good advice and something I should make an effort to do. Thank you for this instructional and informative video. ❤ M
I've been a follower of yours for a little while and I enjoy every bit of your videos. I am still in undergrad, albeit not in humanities. My ultimate goal is to be a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) after completion of my undergrad in Nursing. You still help inspire me on how to make myself more presentable as a future CRNA school candidate and also how to organize my life to support my studies.
I just wanted to say something to biology majors out there wanting to do a PhD because some of the things in this video don’t really apply. IN MY EXPERIENCE you can defiantly get into a program without undergrad research (it does help A LOT and if you have the chance definitely do it but I wouldn’t say not having it is a deal breaker) you just need to have a clear reason why you think research is for you. Also, you should not go into grad school with a specific research question (you should have an area you want to work in i.e. I said I wanted to work in plant ecology and conservation). Picking a research question before applying will EXTREMELY limit where you can apply as you have to find an advisor working on something very similar and be willing to do that specific question, which I have never heard of happening (it may happen but I’d think that it’s very rare). So still apply to grad school if you are a biology major that didn’t get the opportunity to get undergrad research and you don’t have a specific question in mind for your PhD.
I plan to get a masters in linguistics (specifically psycholinguistics and language learning methodology). I'm worried about pursuing my master's even though I don't have an undergrad in the field of study, so this is a complete 180 career change from my background in the fashion industry as an assistant technical designer. I currently tutor French, German, and Spanish, but I want to pursue research on a language learning theory and explore methods of foreign language teaching to better serve my nonprofit organization to help with developing effective language learning within the education system. My goal is to go back to Europe to study because I feel like it adds a more multicultural experience as someone who speaks 10 different languages while also studying human language.
Thank you so so much for this Katelyn, this is truly helpful. I am looking at graduate schools in the US and the system is so different from my country that it seemed daunting. But your videos are so helpful so thank you for your incredible work
It might be worth mentioning that it isn't always so critical to have your own research question in the sciences, at least in the UK, because studentships are more of a thing over here.
Thank you for all of the wonderful information! I am passionate about social psychology. Learning more about how people act in groups, and cognitive dissonance theory is fascinating. Therefore, I am getting my undergraduate degree in psychology and minoring in sociology. Then I plan on getting a graduate degree in social psychology.
That's fascinating! I just graduated with my MSW this may, our fields are very similar. I'm curious, are you having trouble organizing all your workload? Because I know I personally had 20+ paged syllabi and it was a challenge lol.
This video is so incredibly helpful! I’m currently a sophomore in college thinking about pursuing grad school after I graduate. Could you possibly make a video about how to really get started with research during your undergraduate career? Can you do research individually if your school doesn’t offer a lot of undergraduate research opportunities/thesis? How can you learn about research methodologies or just what/how to write in general? Thanks! :)
TheRedHeadAcademic Thanks for your response! I saw that you were hosting a masterclass on research! Do you think you might possibly go over some of the questions I asked above in that class?
This is invaluable insight and delivered in such an accessible manner! -- For those of us that might be considering graduate studies much after (read 10 years) our undergraduate degree, are there any general tips? My primary concern comes from not having kept contact with professors, save one.
Hello! My interests are on early Medieval mythology. Most specifically on gendered symbolism between masculine and feminine trials and challenges in mythology and how these translate into later Christian gendered symbols.
Great video. There are very few humanities graduate students on RUclips and I think you're the best among them. One question: You said you submitted six letters of recommendation when you applied for PhD. Is it allowed to send that many in your department? My field is English and I'll be applying for PhD two years from now, and all top graduate programs in English in the US (Columbia, Harvard, Princeton, Yale, UChicago, UPenn, UC Berkeley) ask for three or four letters of recommendation. They ask never to send more than four. I thought that was the case with every discipline. Now I'm surprised to hear that you submitted six. Is it really allowed?
I submitted the max number accepted for my program. The max will vary per school and you in no way need to submit more than the requested amount. I had specific reasons for wanting to include each recommender
Thank you so much for this video! I am a third-year undergrad studying history and I really want to attend graduate school for diplomatic history. I am preparing to start my thesis this spring, but you mentioned that you also did an independent research project prior to writing your thesis, as a third-year do you think it would be too late for me to start an independent research project this year before starting my thesis? Do you think it is necessary to have conducted independent research outside of a thesis before applying to graduate programs?
Yay you're almost done! :) congrats! I would recommend project planning your assignments to prevent from getting overwhelmed with the workload, that's what I did in graduate school, it saved me so much time and stress!
