@ while its true that that larger population of puertorico has more than 60% EU dna and a lot of them look white myself included. There are many mestizos and blacks. But when i lived in PR they always taught us in school about the beauty of our ancestor african slave brothers and the culture tgey they brought to the island to share with everyone like yheir artistry and music. Every time i watch Telemundo, Univision and the other Latino channels i see they all look white. We should have Latino's of color also representing our culture, it would be a beautiful thing to see. Hi ladies! Most latinos in america don't realize or understand there is such thing as afro-latinos. Me, for example, I didn't know until I met my parent's afro friends in Colombia. I was born and raised in America thinking latinos or hispanics were a race and only brown or white people were latinos/hispanics. To this day i feel ashamed for thinking like that but thanks to afro-latinos speaking out and clearing the misconception, I'm glad I understand and recognize afro-latinos. I think if it were latinos raised in Latin America, it would be completely different.
Unfortunately, most "black" Dominicans do NOT understand the difference between "race" and ethnicity. I've met Domincans who I referred to as "black" and they've corrected me and said they're Dominican. I just shake my head and drop it. Fools!
These ladies clearly expressed why there is a continuous misunderstanding between Black/African Americans and Afro/Latin Americans. Are you black? Of course, sometimes with limited or BROKEN-English, they respond "Me not Black" - that does not mean that people do not recognize their skin color, they can look in the mirror and see they are "Negrito-Negrita /Black" what they are trying to say is I'm from Latin/South Americ/Caribbean. I do not identified with the Black American Experience - as they were enslaved in another country by the Spaniards and not the British like in America.Therefore, the Slave Laws were different, the language, Spanish, is different, the food, the weather, the culture/ethnicity. Slaves were mixing w/the Indian inhabitants and Spaniards, as well as, the Dutch, Portuguese, French, etc Slavery was not governed the same like here in America. The Spanish/American War of 1898 was after slavery was abolished. Hence, Afro Latino not Afro American.

Hello my sisters of West African descent. I'm a Black American and I understand perfectly well what you ladies are saying. You are Latina (which is a cultural identifier), and Black (which is a racial identifier). I'm American, which says a lot about my cultural heritage but says nothing about my racial heritage. I can't say I'm of 100% American descent haha. What I am is an American of West African descent, and that's how I look at myself. Genetically speaking you ladies and I are essentially of the same make-up, just like our Jamaican, Haitian, Trinidadian, and Afro Latino cousins. What disappoints me though is how Afro- Latinos that I've talked to refuse to acknowledge their African heritage and these guys look like my aunts and uncles, it actually offends me. They say no, I'm not black, I'm Dominican, or I'm Cuban, or I'm Puerto Rican, failing to realize that when I say Black I'm not referring my ethnic group, what I'm referring to is people of Sub Saharan African descent. Based on their logic my blood is 100% American, and if I take a DNA test today, it'll come back saying I'm of 100% American descent with not a drop of African blood in me! I actually do speak Spanish fluently too. You sistas have to keep pushing for acknowledgement like my people did here in the states. We didn't get this publicity for free ya know! Look at what our Jackie Robinson had to go through. My people surely paid the price! I believe in you ladies and I support the movement because it really sucks to watch Telemundo and Univision and not see my people get their fair share of representation, and yes you are my people. And yet they dance to our African rhythms and enjoy our rich cultural improvisations. I say hell no to that! Things gotta change!!!

I do not understand why say 'we do not understand why we are not represented, etc..?' Latin America is still very racist. Latin people generally do not recognize racism unless it is overt, physical forms like name calling, spitting and so on. I wonder whether this lack of understanding is because the black people have been so much more discriminated and isolated to the extent that they may never have had even the opportunity for civil rights movements like Afro-Americans and West Indians. Other parts of the world where the conversation occurred are more tolerant and inclusive than L America. Ironically however, L Americans, even black ones (who themselves are too used to racism to not see it) speak of how they have no racism. Their inability to see it perpetuates it. It's frightening! I saw situations within the last few years that were common in the US 30 and 40 years ago ... but only now to lesser extents. This goes so far. I know of cases in which white latinas rejected their black babies because of the stigma. They dump their babies in the poor regions with the father's mother as opposed to expose their children to opportunities in mainstream society. Funny how they even scoff at American news reports that openly discuss race issues that happen in their own country saying, 'We don't have that.' Foreign black people with money are upsetting to the status quo and meet subtle resistance. I know of a case of sabotage. People can be very friendly to foreign blacks though but there are always invisible lines. Thanks for sharing but your tip toeing around the elephant in the room is irritating. Black latinos need to start talking up! The start of the discussions is overdue!
I think it has a lot to fo with the fact that Latin America still has the colonialism mentality and is owned in most countries by european elites, they want to portray what they find more "esthetically pleasant" , and another thing could be that the amount of afrodescendants with a professional degree is not common, that shows the inequality that still faces the afrodescendants. Ideally we should represent our beautiful diversity, but the reality is that the ones who can do it don't care.

I have to agree with everything that was stated in this video. I am a U.S. born Afro- Latina, specifically, my family is from Panama. The ignorance I have been confronted with about the whole Black/Latino issue is too real. I've basically spent my entire life (I'm 21) trying to explain to others about how black Africans were transported to the Americas through the transatlantic slave trade. It seems to boggle their minds that I can both claim to be black but yet identify as Latina than African-America. At the same time, I find the ignorance regarding the African diaspora from both black american and Latin Americans appalling. However, I mostly blame that on the Euro-centrist history we are spoon fed from the time we first attend school in both the US and Latin America. I respect your opinion but you are ignoring some reasons as to why latin america is presently less "successful" than the anglo colonies (the U.S in particular). The Spanish settled the new world solely for exploitation of resources, while relying on slave labor (both black and Indian) to make a profit for Spain. The english pilgrims, on the other hand, established colonies in America to inhabit and escape from religious persecution, rather than to use exclusively for economic gain.
darkeagle Noooooooo. There were black people in Panama prior to the building of the canal. Descendants of slaves freed by Spain. Then Afro Caribbeans from other nations came to work on the canal and created family in Panama. Get the story right. So the existence was there in addition to maroon or cimarroon communities from neighboring countries. I’ve my studied and done lots of research on Afrodescendants in Latin America. Get our story right 👌🏽

Latino pop culture completely disregards AfroLatinos and I am glad that you are able to portray a positive image for other AfroLatinos. It makes me glad that you are on a mission to positively represent AfroLatinos. I myself am mixed Latino, with Filipino roots. So I get asked, "How can you be Filipino, from Latin America?" when in all reality, a lot of Latinos do have Filipino roots for the same reasons you have African roots. In any event. I think though as far as Puertoricans or Jibaros they want to phase them out and Univision probably wants to pull out of Puerto Rico for good because of its financial situation at least from what I heard.

Once that happen it seems like more Puerto ricans started to show up on Univsion and honestly I had to just change the channel. I think Puerto Ricans got some high positions in Human Resources but just like Puerto Rico the island going down plagued with debt I see Univison going along the same the path. It has now official become a cluster phuck. When you look at Asians they are kind of lucky they speak different languages and they have Chinese Tv and Korean Tv and Japanese Tv and it actually caters to a demographic. This is what use to make Univision very succesful but now I think we will start to see ratings fall. It will take 6 to 12 months to see the results and it falling but it is imminent. Univsion ratings will soon start to tank.

I watched both of your videos and it was very good. Your video is teaching me about what is going on in your world experience. You are saying that because of your physical appearance, people treat you a particular way and it generally is not good. It is saying what people really think of american blacks and that saddens me. I have watched spanish language tv and i was suprised once when i saw two white talk show hosts but the whole audience were indigidous. Boy, I'd like to see dark skinned indigidous people on American tv as well. My background is from the caribbean mostly from Martinique. I just accept any black person as my own regardless of ethnicity. I was taught growing up that black is black whether dark or light and Im ok with this because it is understood that we all have a common experience--slavery, and I do not want to forget this but embrace this as strength.

oh my gosh!!! I love this so much! I normally don't post my life story on here, but I just have to say... I get questions like this alot seeing how my last name is Ramirez. So people think I'm Mexican, so I have to repeat myself quite often. I get put off by the lack of knowledge people have when it comes to my last name and my dad's decent (mom is African American). Yet I remind myself that I once was lost, blinded to that knowledge. At the end of the day you guys cleared up some questions I had and also help me find other ways to explain to people what is part of me. THANK YOU THANK YOU!

Hi there! Thanks for the video, it's very informative. I've been to colombia, I was meant to go for 6 only lasted a month. I;m an indian girl, who speaks fluent spanish but I just got sick of being treated like a lesser person. I'd heard about a bit of tension but I didn't realise it was THIS bad and lol I ignorantly didn't think it would happen to me. When I catch the sun, I do go dark and I love it but the response I got was just like (if not worse than) India. "urghh eres negra! tienes que aclarar su piel para que seas bonita..." I'm tall and thin so every asked if I was a model, but that was where the compliments ended. Before I spoke (don't have a colombian accent when I speak) people would think I was a dark skinned colombian and I thought by saying I was a foreigner i would get a bit more of an elevated status... - no. It didn't work lol. I went to volunteer and the white volunteers loved it - they were treated a lot better than me; in the sense colombians were a lot more warmer to them and made an effort to be friends. Where as they were cold to me and I'm a really warm person and tried but they didn't want to know :/ I had people in Medellin come up to me and ask me if I was a prostitute, because apparently they're all my colour! I tried to explain this to the white volunteers, yet they made out like I was imagining things.. I am SO HAPPY to find your video and find I have someone to relate to. I guess they haven't opened their eyes yet as they literally get treated like celebrities. For example, I was in a hostel in Medellin with a blonde friend and loads of colombians passed through as shouted "dile al modelo tirar un foto de nosotros con la rubia" there was an actual line of people and I stood there with their phones taking pictures of them with my friend lol. I taught in a school on the coast, where obviously majority of colombian costenos are black and brown. I saw very few white ones yet the children were petrified of becoming black and such a stigma was put on it. As I said this same thing goes on in India but not the extent where jobs or flats won't be given to you if you're dark skinned - if you can do the job you have it (nepotism aside). I've been to mexico and lived in the Domincian where they were just nice, I didn't experience it to this extent there. Dominicans seem to have recently discovered el pelu indu :P so got a lot of requests to cut my hair and give it lol. I chose colombia because I knew there were black people there so I though I would experience less racism there as opposed to if I went to argentina. I was so wrong... live and learn. I agree afro-latinos need to be represented on latino and black television as well. I'm a black american and when I tell my friends or family that Latin America has a larger black population than the United States they either don't believe me or be astounded. I wish that they would teach about afro-latino history like they do African- American history in school or for Black History month because at the end of the day our ancestors came from the same continent and we face the same struggles no matter what country we are from.
I totally understand you two. I am Caribbean more specifically Haitian and Dominican and a lot of people ask me am I black. My response is yes but I am not African American. I am Afro-caribbean/ Afro-Latino.

A lot of American born Latinos don't know that there are black Latinos, Arab Latinos and Asian Latinos. Yes your race is Black. Your Nationality is the Country you were Born in and or currently live in and have a citizenship if you immigrated to another country. If a Black person was born in the United States they are not an immigrant or an "African -American". They are full United States Citizens the same way that White Americans are full United States Citizens they same way there are - why because they were BORN there. In the United States if you were born there you will have a Birth Certificate that indicates the City, County and the State you were born in within the United States. A person who for example is an immigrant aka an "African - American" which can be a person of any color i.e. Black, White, Arab, Asian or Indian who was BORN in any one of the many African countries on the Continent of Africa who changes their citizenship by going through the five year federally required legal process that it takes to become an American. That individual will have immigration documents. They will not possess an American Birth Certificate because they were not born in the United States thus they are not a Natural Citizen of this country. ALL immigrants are REQUIRED to go through this process and have their immigration documents. People who were Born in Africa and immigrate to the United States are NOT exempt from this process. Thus as person who was Born here in the U.S. I am an American. My race is Black. My Nationality is American. I am a Black American. I am NOT an immigrant aka an "African - American" and here's why. I was NOT born in Africa, I have NEVER been to Africa and I've ONLY seen Africa on TV. I'm NOT even on my way to Africa for a visit. I get what you are saying but we say afro because we are proud of our African decent and we want to acknowledge that we are black because people often get confused when it comes to the difference between African American and Afro Latino. Most people think Latino is a race but it's not. :)
This is a much needed video. I wish I had this for my students. Latinos are as confused as African Americans...and why? Because the media has confused them. Growing up, I knew about Afro Latinos because my uncle was from Panama. My mom explained it to me. I never learned about this in school...until college. Now, with the minimal Spanish I know, I turn on the TV and the only Afro Latinos I see are playing sports. It kind of parallels to how Afro Americans are seen on sports all the time as well. We have an voice in American media that Afro Latinos are not given. African (Afro) Americans need to help Afro Latinos get that voice. If Telemundo won't give it, then BET or TV One needs to give them some air time. Just my opinion, you women are gorgeous. We can change things. Keep on educating and remain proud.

I agree and feel your pain (ladies). I'm Puerto Rican and would love to see more diversity in Latino television. Every time i watch Telemundo, Univision and the other Latino channels i see they all look white. We should have Latino's of color also representing our culture, it would be a beautiful thing to see. I have to admit it's also by design, it's like giving fake credence that we're all white. It's definitely a barrier that needs to be broken.

Hi ladies! Most latinos in america don't realize or understand there is such thing as afro-latinos. Me, for example, I didn't know until I met my parent's afro friends in Colombia. I was born and raised in America thinking latinos or hispanics were a race and only brown or white people were latinos/hispanics. To this day i feel ashamed for thinking like that but thanks to afro-latinos speaking out and clearing the misconception, I'm glad I understand and recognize afro-latinos. I think if it were latinos raised in Latin America, it would be completely different.
Unfortunately, most "black" Dominicans do NOT understand the difference between "race" and ethnicity. I've met Domincans who I referred to as "black" and they've corrected me and said they're Dominican. I just shake my head and drop it. Fools!
These ladies clearly expressed why there is a continuous misunderstanding between Black/African Americans and Afro/Latin Americans. Are you black? Of course, sometimes with limited or BROKEN-English, they respond "Me not Black" - that does not mean that people do not recognize their skin color, they can look in the mirror and see they are "Negrito-Negrita /Black" what they are trying to say is I'm from Latin/South Americ/Caribbean. I do not identified with the Black American Experience - as they were enslaved in another country by the Spaniards and not the British like in America.Therefore, the Slave Laws were different, the language, Spanish, is different, the food, the weather, the culture/ethnicity. Slaves were mixing w/the Indian inhabitants and Spaniards, as well as, the Dutch, Portuguese, French, etc Slavery was not governed the same like here in America. The Spanish/American War of 1898 was after slavery was abolished. Hence, Afro Latino not Afro American.

Hello my sisters of West African descent. I'm a Black American and I understand perfectly well what you ladies are saying. You are Latina (which is a cultural identifier), and Black (which is a racial identifier). I'm American, which says a lot about my cultural heritage but says nothing about my racial heritage. I can't say I'm of 100% American descent haha. What I am is an American of West African descent, and that's how I look at myself. Genetically speaking you ladies and I are essentially of the same make-up, just like our Jamaican, Haitian, Trinidadian, and Afro Latino cousins. What disappoints me though is how Afro- Latinos that I've talked to refuse to acknowledge their African heritage and these guys look like my aunts and uncles, it actually offends me. They say no, I'm not black, I'm Dominican, or I'm Cuban, or I'm Puerto Rican, failing to realize that when I say Black I'm not referring my ethnic group, what I'm referring to is people of Sub Saharan African descent. Based on their logic my blood is 100% American, and if I take a DNA test today, it'll come back saying I'm of 100% American descent with not a drop of African blood in me! I actually do speak Spanish fluently too. You sistas have to keep pushing for acknowledgement like my people did here in the states. We didn't get this publicity for free ya know! Look at what our Jackie Robinson had to go through. My people surely paid the price! I believe in you ladies and I support the movement because it really sucks to watch Telemundo and Univision and not see my people get their fair share of representation, and yes you are my people. And yet they dance to our African rhythms and enjoy our rich cultural improvisations. I say hell no to that! Things gotta change!!!

I've been speaking out about these issues to my social circle for a while now. Maybe I should try the social media thing. Just wanted to say Great Job Ladies for shining some light on the subject of AFRO LATINO heritage. Thumbs up 👍

Latin America is still very racist. Latin people generally do not recognize racism unless it is overt, physical forms like name calling, spitting and so on. I wonder whether this lack of understanding is because the black people have been so much more discriminated and isolated to the extent that they may never have had even the opportunity for civil rights movements like Afro-Americans and West Indians. Other parts of the world where the conversation occurred are more tolerant and inclusive than L America. Ironically however, L Americans, even black ones (who themselves are too used to racism to not see it) speak of how they have no racism.
Their inability to see it perpetuates it. It's frightening! I saw situations within the last few years that were common in the US 30 and 40 years ago ... but only now to lesser extents.
This goes so far. I know of cases in which white latinas rejected their black babies because of the stigma. They dump their babies in the poor regions with the father's mother as opposed to expose their children to opportunities in mainstream society. Funny how they even scoff at American news reports that openly discuss race issues that happen in their own country saying, 'We don't have that.'
Foreign black people with money are upsetting to the status quo and meet subtle resistance. I know of a case of sabotage. People can be very friendly to foreign blacks though but there are always invisible lines.

I think it has a lot to fo with the fact that Latin America still has the colonialism mentality and is owned in most countries by european elites, they want to portray what they find more "esthetically pleasant" , and another thing could be that the amount of afrodescendants with a professional degree is not common, that shows the inequality that still faces the afrodescendants. Ideally we should represent our beautiful diversity, but the reality is that the ones who can do it don't care.

So proud of you ladies. I used to get into fights in school as a kid because I was a black Panameno. It never a problem at home being black because I always knew i was black I just spoke spanish and english.
I have to agree with everything that was stated in this video. I am a U.S. born Afro- Latina, specifically, my family is from Panama. The ignorance I have been confronted with about the whole Black/Latino issue is too real. I've basically spent my entire life (I'm 21) trying to explain to others about how black Africans were transported to the Americas through the transatlantic slave trade. It seems to boggle their minds that I can both claim to be black but yet identify as Latina than African-America. At the same time, I find the ignorance regarding the African diaspora from both black american and Latin Americans appalling. However, I mostly blame that on the Euro-centrist history we are spoon fed from the time we first attend school in both the US and Latin America.

Honeslty one of the most hideous accents on Tv was Puerto Rican and Puerto rico owned Telemundo but sold it. Once that happen it seems like more Puerto ricans started to show up on Univsion and honestly I had to just change the channel.
I don't know why Univision decided to change the formula but I can tell you that their ratings will fall. I think Puerto Ricans got some high positions in Human Resources but just like Puerto Rico the island going down plagued with debt I see Univison going along the same the path. It has now official become a cluster phuck.
When you look at Asians they are kind of lucky they speak different languages and they have Chinese Tv and Korean Tv and Japanese Tv and it actually caters to a demographic. This is what use to make Univision very succesful but now I think we will start to see ratings fall. It will take 6 to 12 months to see the results and it falling but it is imminent. Univsion ratings will soon start to tank.

I watched both of your videos and it was very good. Your video is teaching me about what is going on in your world experience. You are saying that because of your physical appearance, people treat you a particular way and it generally is not good. It is saying what people really think of american blacks and that saddens me. I have watched spanish language tv and i was suprised once when i saw two white talk show hosts but the whole audience were indigidous. Boy, I'd like to see dark skinned indigidous people on American tv as well. My background is from the caribbean mostly from Martinique. I just accept any black person as my own regardless of ethnicity. I was taught growing up that black is black whether dark or light and Im ok with this because it is understood that we all have a common experience--slavery, and I do not want to forget this but embrace this as strength.

oh my gosh!!! I love this so much! I normally don't post my life story on here, but I just have to say... I get questions like this alot seeing how my last name is Ramirez. So people think I'm Mexican, so I have to repeat myself quite often. I get put off by the lack of knowledge people have when it comes to my last name and my dad's decent (mom is African American). Yet I remind myself that I once was lost, blinded to that knowledge. Hi there! Thanks for the video, it's very informative. I've been to colombia, I was meant to go for 6 only lasted a month. I;m an indian girl, who speaks fluent spanish but I just got sick of being treated like a lesser person. I'd heard about a bit of tension but I didn't realise it was THIS bad and lol I ignorantly didn't think it would happen to me. When I catch the sun, I do go dark and I love it but the response I got was just like (if not worse than) India. "urghh eres negra! tienes que aclarar su piel para que seas bonita..."
I'm tall and thin so every asked if I was a model, but that was where the compliments ended. Before I spoke (don't have a colombian accent when I speak) people would think I was a dark skinned colombian and I thought by saying I was a foreigner i would get a bit more of an elevated status... - no. It didn't work lol.
I went to volunteer and the white volunteers loved it - they were treated a lot better than me; in the sense colombians were a lot more warmer to them and made an effort to be friends. Where as they were cold to me and I'm a really warm person and tried but they didn't want to know :/ I had people in Medellin come up to me and ask me if I was a prostitute, because apparently they're all my colour! I tried to explain this to the white volunteers, yet they made out like I was imagining things.. I am SO HAPPY to find your video and find I have someone to relate to. I guess they haven't opened their eyes yet as they literally get treated like celebrities. For example, I was in a hostel in Medellin with a blonde friend and loads of colombians passed through as shouted "dile al modelo tirar un foto de nosotros con la rubia" there was an actual line of people and I stood there with their phones taking pictures of them with my friend lol.
I taught in a school on the coast, where obviously majority of colombian costenos are black and brown. I saw very few white ones yet the children were petrified of becoming black and such a stigma was put on it. As I said this same thing goes on in India but not the extent where jobs or flats won't be given to you if you're dark skinned - if you can do the job you have it (nepotism aside).
I've been to mexico and lived in the Domincian where they were just nice, I didn't experience it to this extent there. Dominicans seem to have recently discovered el pelu indu :P so got a lot of requests to cut my hair and give it lol. I chose colombia because I knew there were black people there so I though I would experience less racism there as opposed to if I went to argentina. I was so wrong... live and learn.

I agree afro-latinos need to be represented on latino and black television as well. I'm a black american and when I tell my friends or family that Latin America has a larger black population than the United States they either don't believe me or be astounded. I wish that they would teach about afro-latino history like they do African- American history in school or for Black History month because at the end of the day our ancestors came from the same continent and we face the same struggles no matter what country we are from.

Yes your race is Black. Your Nationality is the Country you were Born in and or currently live in and have a citizenship if you immigrated to another country. If a Black person was born in the United States they are not an immigrant or an "African -American". They are full United States Citizens the same way that White Americans are full United States Citizens they same way there are - why because they were BORN there. In the United States if you were born there you will have a Birth Certificate that indicates the City, County and the State you were born in within the United States.
A person who for example is an immigrant aka an "African - American" which can be a person of any color i.e. Black, White, Arab, Asian or Indian who was BORN in any one of the many African countries on the Continent of Africa who changes their citizenship by going through the five year federally required legal process that it takes to become an American. That individual will have immigration documents. They will not possess an American Birth Certificate because they were not born in the United States thus they are not a Natural Citizen of this country.
ALL immigrants are REQUIRED to go through this process and have their immigration documents. People who were Born in Africa and immigrate to the United States are NOT exempt from this process. Thus as person who was Born here in the U.S. I am an American. My race is Black. My Nationality is American. I am a Black American.
I am NOT an immigrant aka an "African - American" and here's why. I was NOT born in Africa, I have NEVER been to Africa and I've ONLY seen Africa on TV. I'm NOT even on my way to Africa for a visit. I am insulted when some refers to me as a foreigner - immigrant aka an "African - American" and here's why. I am insulted by that because that is NOT what I am. I do not hold a dual citizenship in the U.S. and Africa. I am an American. I am a Proud Black Unhyphenated American Born Citizen. This is a much needed video. I wish I had this for my students. Latinos are as confused as African Americans...and why? Because the media has confused them. Growing up, I knew about Afro Latinos because my uncle was from Panama. My mom explained it to me. I never learned about this in school...until college. Now, with the minimal Spanish I know, I turn on the TV and the only Afro Latinos I see are playing sports. It kind of parallels to how Afro Americans are seen on sports all the time as well. We have an voice in American media that Afro Latinos are not given. African (Afro) Americans need to help Afro Latinos get that voice. If Telemundo won't give it, then BET or TV One needs to give them some air time. Just my opinion, you women are gorgeous. We can change things. Keep on educating and remain proud.

They are IMPOSTORS; with the bad habit invading other cultures & then taking it over as theirs;
Example:
(1) Arawaks. now extinct.
(2) Caribs =British safety.
(3) Creoles, vs. "Kriols".
(4) Latinos. vs.
"Afro-Latinos ".
Note:
In 2001, UNESCO awarded the Garifunas as the
"preservers of the Arawak language", and that is bc the Arawaks are no longer around to speak it themselves.
