  • The xTool D1 10W laser engraver has been a fun tool to play with. It's got a decent build volume, a pretty powerful laser (for a diode) and even comes with a rotary tool to let you engrave cylindrical objects.
I have a few projects I want to do with this in the upcoming weeks and months and I've already had a few questions on Facebook about how to do certain things, so expect more videos with this one!
I'll also be looking (or designing?) a laser cut kit at some point to make an actual camera that I can put film in and shoot... Like a real camera and not just a tiny decoration!

Clarification about the xTool Honeycomb for the xTool D1 - I mentioned in the video that it's not available in the UK. To be specific, I meant there are no retailers in the UK that have it available for sale. You can still get it in the UK directly from the xTool website - bit.ly/xtoolhoneycomb

I'd probably make a ruler engraved on a chopsaw fence with custom stop marks for common measurements

That's an excellent idea! I hadn't even thought about something like that... It gives me a few other ideas now! :)

I would make thin spring steel business cards with mm and imperial scales on the edges with 0.6mm holes at each division. Make a template for them like you did for the bottle opener. Like Incra tools marking rules. See their 2"x3" pocket rules.
These will be ultra useful and anyone who has one will love it and associate the good feelings they get from using it with whoever has their name on it! Plus they will keep it handy that keeps your info handy.
A professor in Pharmacy school told me he gives out pocket screwdrivers as business cards and companies that use him as a consultant call him back all the time for work because they think he's a handy guy who can fix things (he can but that's not his gig, he's a respiratory inhaler researcher) and he gets a ton of work that way. These pocket rulers will accomplish the same thing.

Perhaps next time making a camera obscura would work for something functioning 😉

That's kinda what I'm thinking, actually. But, a little one, that I can stick a 4x5 sheet film holder in the back of! :)
