      Hey Ed, I started using a laser last January with this video ruclips.net/video/-xjErwE7d8I/видео.html. They really aren't as hard as I thought they would be to use. Learning the program, Lightburn or LaserGRBL are the hardest part. Now xTool has it's own program xcs that is really simple to use, but doesn't have the best features. Then figuring out the best setting for a cut is next. Each laser maker has a listing of those you can download though. Again, xcs has a drop down menu that has the settings for you, which is real helpful. Took me about a week to really get a handle on using a laser. Once you learn the program the rest is more simple. But there are lost or resources to learn them. xTool has two Facebook groups that are very helpful to help you along. People post their issues and their projects with speeds, power and dpi line. I have steadily drank in information on lasers where ever I could for the last year. I have still yet to scratch the surface on what I can do on this thing. So, I took the long way around my shoulder to scratch my elbow here, but you can start engraving and cutting right away.
      A few things to remember when you get started. 1. focusing the laser is paramount. 2. Air assist helps with cutting and scorch marks. 3. learn the basics first. Engrave, then cut. 4. Use eye protection. These lasers will burn a hole through your retina and you won't know till it's to late. 5 Use honeycomb and a metal plate under the piece. This helps with cutting and saves your work surface. 6. There are a lot of resources out there for free projects. 7. if you have a problem, don't get frustrated, ask someone. If you are having an issue best bet that someone else has had it too.
      There you go I hope this helps. If you have any more questions or need help reach out to me here or on fakebook messenger (Moonpie Creations).

      The rotary tool they have works great. BUT, I would get rotary tool accessory kit with it. This comes with a rotary chuck and some jaws. this will help do those glasses. xTool has a program called xsc, but it's very basic. You can use LaserGRBL also, which is a free program. I use Lightburn, it is the industry standard and is very versatile. It costs about $60 for a lifetime license. I would suggest getting it.

    Three questions:
    1. Will this be able to engrave Aluminum cuff bracelets?
    2. What's the black stuff you put on tumbler before engraving?
    3. Do you recommend this over the longer ray 5? I've been looking into both

    • @MoonpieCreations
      @MoonpieCreations  Год назад +1

      So let me answer these in order.
      1. The xTool D1 20w will not to my knowledge engrave Aluminum. Most Diode laser won't. If you are looking to engrave aluminum I would suggest a fiber laser of Co2 laser. I am putting a video out tomorrow on the Atomstack M4 fiber/IR Laser. This may be what you need.
      2. That is washable pain called PRANG Washable Tempera Paint you can find it on Amazon here amzn.to/3vFiZVH
      3. This is a hard one to answer, because it really depends. The Longer Ray5 with 10w laser is a perfect mid range laser and will be able to do most anything you need for a small business or hobby. I highly recommend it. The xTool D1 is in a different league. The cuts are a lot better with all the material I have cut. with the ability to cut thicker material with one pass. The downside is that it is expensive and maybe not for a hobby user. Why? Because the pay back is unlikely to happen unless you are doing laser stuff all day long and selling those pieces constantly. I will be putting out a comparison video between all my lasers soon. Talking about each one and what I think is the best bang for the buck.
      Let me know if you have any other questions or you need me to expand on these. you can also contact me on Facebook Messenger. My page is below in the description.

      Ventilation can be achieved by buying an eclogues or making one. I don’t use either. I open my garage door and the smoke is sucked out. They also have free online conversion programs to convert to vector. You can design in Lightburn also. A lifetime license is $60.

      I just released a review on the Atomstack X20 Pro. ruclips.net/video/utnfaEwC5D0/видео.html I don't say xTool in it, because Atomstack asked me not to make a direct comparison. But I will tell you now that I think it is very comparable. Although it doesn't seem as sturdy. It rocked every test I threw at it. I am going to be releasing a review on the ATEZR P20 in two weeks. That machine has blown away my expectations for it as I had never heard of it before. But I'm only half way through testing it. If you do go for the Atomstack they have it $200 off right now with a honeycomb. Feel free to check it out here:

As for metals like silver you would need to get the Advanced jewelry kit. It comes with an IR module also. Great video! I have searched and searched for a video demo of engraving a wine bottle and the results. I've seen many videos of engraving drinking glasses and flat glass and mirrors. But none of a wine bottle. There is a video of engraving a full beer bottle. But the beer bottle explodes. I'm guessing it's due to the carbonation but they don't exactly say what the actual problem was. So I'm at a loss if it will work on a full wine bottle. I have a business that uses several sizes of wine bottles and would love to offer engraving services for customers. Got any advice? Or have you tried to engrave a dark green/brown wine bottle? Thank you in advance!

      @MoonpieCreations  Год назад

      So I have never tried this myself, but I've went and talked to a few friends who have. They have only done it with their 5w and 10w. The advice they gave was to do a test engrave on an empty bottle, but still paint it with tempura paint. They know this sounds counter intuitive, but it really helps. Once you do the test engrave use the lowest settings you can to engrave on a Cheap bottle of wine. Yes paint that one also. They said get a few of those $5 wine bottles from Walmart. tape off an area you want to engrave and paint just that section. They said if you use to high of power the bottle will crack or burst and ruin your rotary. Hope this helps. I may try it. I'll let you know if I do.

    Love your videos. You are a bit late with this one though. Got my xTool D1 Pro about a month ago and have been coming up to speed on it since then. You are correct, the potential with this machine is pretty much limited only by your imagination. My initial motivation for getting this was to be able to add signatures and embellishments to my turnings. It will definitely do that. When I get around to it. This has been another rabbit hole of project possibilities and things to explore. I also got the 1064 nm module to provide additional capability for engraving metal and plastics. I've done some tile engraving, metal business card engraving, cutting up to 1/4" plywood to make boxes and have experimented with cutting 1/2" plywood. I can also say that xTool support is very responsive; I had an incident and they were quick to respond and resolve the issue; as an aside I will add that the xTool Extra care is probably good insurance and worth getting. (DAMHIKT).
    Bottom line: Get this laser and you have entered a new rabbit hole of projects and possibilities. The good news is that you aren't going to be purchasing lots of new tools and accessories for the laser if you get the full complement you showed in your video and add the midwave module if you are wanting to do lots of metal engraving. I now have a use for all of those plywood scraps in the shop I've been too cheap to throw away, you can do quite a bit with them while learning to run the system. I'm building a holder for my Beall collet chuck system that will mount on my french cleat system using plywood I've had for years but that was too small for other projects.
    One thing I would recommend, especially if you get the D1 Pro -- get Lightburn software; it is a very powerful tool and lets you fully exploit the absolute positioning possible with the D1 Pro.
    Sorry for the length of the comment -- you just posted something that matched exactly with what I've been working on.

      What watt laser? If you are using the 10w they suggest 100/3/1. If using the 20w 100/6/1. I have had good cutting with the 20w settings on 3mm birch ply. If that doesn't work I would suggest brining the power down and increasing the passes. If you are cutting wood, it will depend on what kind. It also depends on where you live too. I would suggest doing a cut test on scrap wood. You can cut a bunch of circles with different settings and see which one works best for you. I highly suggest you join the official xTool groups on facebook. A wealth of information there.

It dries in like 5 seconds and my etchings actual improved. When you've got a hundred glasses to etch, tempura wont cut it. It will take forever that way. ¡Hola!
