      i dont think we will get a sequel for some reason this movie was shit on, seems like if its not just another copy/paste marvel movie no one cares, and i dont get why no one cared about this movie, especially as its cyberpunk which is pretty big right now with everyone hyped over that game, perhaps a sequel would do better once the game is out and everyone is in full cyberpunk mode

      @Captain Twice haha yea, hence the " *Almost* all" though I don't think he was nearly as bad as people say. It's not like he was stellar or anything but he was at least servicable. Rosa, Christoph and Ali totally killed it, they're almost indistinguishable from the original. Chiren doesn't have that much of a character but the only thing bugging me with Jennifer's precense in the film was her dark hair and if that's the biggest issue one has with a character it's really not much to complain about :P

      in the manga, Ido had a cat named Alita, that had died, which he used as the name for her, there was no Chiren in the manga, and so no daughter of theirs named Alita
      (so, the manga actually was close to you getting the dog and naming it ALita, except it was a cat that Ido had and named as Alita, lol)
      chiren was created in the OVA-anime, but I don't know if they had a daughter named Alita or not (I've not watched the OVA-anime yet)
      there's quite some differences between the manga and the OVA-anime (as they took some creative licensing, diverging in some content a bit from the manga)

      This has been a weird year for me. I was cautiously anticipating a manga-to-live action movie that ends up being my favorite movie in years. I was a teenager when Gunnm was released, and 30 years later it's turned into one of my favorite movies in years. Then a small comic parodying superheroes (The Boys) I hadn't been aware of is adapted into an incredible series on amazon. Now prequel series of one of my favorite movies from childhood, Dark Crystal, is looking absolutely stunning in trailers and is about to drop on netflix in about a week. The movies and series I've really enjoyed have been coming from unlikely sources lately.

      I'm unfortunate to be extremely sensitive to artificial artist-only drawn CGI movement. When a live actor obviously is replaced with a clearly CGI model moving in a way nothing in reality ever would, it is immediately noticeable to me and breaks immersion for any scene like that. I noticed this didn't happen in the second Grewishka fight, but I knew there is no way Rosa was flipping around like that in space pajamas and wire work isn't going to be able to look that natural and move at exactly the right speed and direction. I did some searching and discovered they had a Cirque du Soleil acrobat in a performance capture suit actually doing those flips in the scene where Alita is evading the grind cutters. That is why is is so incredibly smooth and natural looking. Even the handstand after she gets her berserker body is performance captured by an acrobat who can actually do a one-arm handstand like that.

    The disconnect of Hugo and Alita I think was intentional. In the Manga Yugo (Hugo in the movie) is obsessed with going to Zalem and never really pays attention to Alita. It's a very one sided relationship with Alita being the only one truly in love.

    • @Valstrax_The_Pirate

    • @KitsyX
      @KitsyX 5 лет назад +29

      I think the problem is more that they put too much in one movie lol. I mean it was great for how much they jammed in there, but if only Hugo/Yugo had had more time to explore his motivations and maybe they'd had some extra time to show him going kinda crazy after becoming a cyborg or something... Instead I think they tried to make him a more of a standard love interest, but didn't have the proper time to do that either... I dunno...
      Oh well, still a pretty amazing adaptation of a mixture of the OVAs and manga, but it's a shame because his end in the OVAs was so much more powerful and such a big moment when I watched it originally... As cool as motorball was, I kinda wish it was cut out in favour of all the other plot points, kinda like the anime... Or maybe if they'd found a way to make this 2 movies or something... That might have other issues though... I'm super glad it exists and that I got to see it in cinemas regardless.

    • @hylogibbon
      @hylogibbon 5 лет назад +68

      They put that chapeltop scene in the movie for a reason. When he said "look at this view", Alita was looking down at Iron City, because she felt the place she currently resides is beautiful. Then he is like "no, up there" and she says "oh.." This was meant to show they had very different perspectives on their current situation, and it showed that they, from the start, had very different goals. It was a romance that was never meant to be, so people shouldn't be acting like the romance ruins the movie. It actually enhances the movie by breaking away from the cliche that all romances are supposed to be a mutual feeling.

    • @AKSBSU
      @AKSBSU 5 лет назад +8

      I feel a little bad for Keenan Johnson because he was just OK but frequently standing next to Waltz and especially Rosa, who had the performance of a lifetime. In a typical movie he would have been passable but certainly not great, but next to Waltz and Rosa he looks extremely outclassed. I'm sure he tried his best, but all his scenes are with incredible talents.

    Just a few things:
    1. James Cameron saw someone on set reading Alita manga while filming Titanic. He borrowed the mangas, read them all, and contacted the writer to lock down a movie deal if it were to ever be made into a movie. Writer agreed. Apparently, Avatar was just practice to make this movie.
    2. There are four original manga. This movie was a combination of the first two, and introduced Jashugan, the fan favorite to win final champion.
    3. Did you guys notice Alita had a different body at the end? Nova. He never stops playing his little games.
    4. Zapan definitely comes back. He gets Alita's URM body and goes on a rampage.

  • @NameHierEinfuegen
    @NameHierEinfuegen 5 лет назад +46

    It makes a huge difference when the producer and the director are fans of the actual manga :D. It is based on the manga, but they took elements from the OVA as well (e.g. Chiren).
    The manga consists of three series so far: The original 9 volumes of "Battle Angel Alita", the alternative ending / continuation "BAA: Last Order" (19 volumes) and finally "BAA: Martian Chronicles" you could call a prequel (currently 5 volumes, ongoing).
    Trivia: Everything in Iron City is cybernetic. The Centurion as well as the Deckmen (that talking head when you turn in a bounty) got lobotomized brains from those turned in criminals as "CPU". In the manga Alita's initial body was made out of an assortment of cyborg hooker parts Ido bought with bounty money (the only beautiful parts available). There are artificial wombs as well, so if a full replacement cyborg wants to have kids, they can.
    Alita's brain was in stasis, the emergency life support in her head coated the brain in some kind of nanotech gel. She was found on top of that trash because there was a catastrophic scrap avalanche a few days before (happens from time to time ... considered a natural disaster ... another reason why Iron City is no place for natural humans).
    Btw. it's a shame they don't mention it but that fountain wall around the city is actually a high pressure waterjet wall :D. If you want to keep in cyborgs you need something better than just a plain wall ;).

    • @Juice-chan
      @Juice-chan 5 лет назад +2

      I remember that they explained the Manga that the high pressure wall is strong enough to RIP even cyborgs apart. Not just ordinary humans. It isn't also regular water but kinda more thick fluid.

    • @Juice-chan
      @Juice-chan 5 лет назад +1

      Also I must somehow forgot about the nanogel. This was an important question where I thought that the Manga didn't explain properly. I just know that her ship gets ripped apart by an explosion looked strange. A fireblast that appeared like an elemental.
      It ripped apart the ship and even attacked her when she was floating away from the ship and ripped half of her body away.

    Great movie, loved it. As far as the fully CGI Alita, they used Weta Digital's Performance Capture pipeline. Lots to read about it if you are interested but the most important thing is that it truly captures the actresses performance and translates it to the digital character, they actually have a fully digital model of Rosa Salazar on which they track the capture data first in order to make sure the interpretation of the data is accurate as far as how all the muscles are moving on her face, then they move it onto the Alita model.

The movie itself covers several books and the OVA. Cameron read the book and fell in love with the character in the 90s he had to wait for technology to catch up to do Alita any real justice.

    Panzer Kunst was so powerful because other cyborgs used built in advantages and weapons while martian berserkers, Kunsters, took martial arts traditions and applied them in their robotic bodies. So normal cyborg would heat up engine and fire his fist trough a wall or armour, Kunster would take a stance put their hip into a punch and THEN activate whatever extra weaponry they had installed. It was a force multiplier to know how to use what they had to maximum effect and also the reason why they had humanoid size and shape instead of hulking monstrosities or tanks like Earth tech.

    Since there was a discussion about OVAs, I thought it would be worth mentioning exactly what the definition of an OVA is. OVA stands for Original Video Animation, and basically just means it's a made for home media release. So it's something that was never intended to air on TV or in theaters, but is released as physical media (DVD/BD or VHS back in the day). Often time they are bundled with releases of manga or light novels.

    The idea behind the whole series is 'what does it mean to be human?'. Does someone who is 99% metal still count as a human being? Do they still have a soul? Until he turns away from Zalem on the cable, right before he dies, Zalem holds prominence over Alita as the object of his affection. If Hugo never felt strong chemistry or had anything other than a passing interest, then the actors' portrayal of the character is spot on.

    FYI, the term OVA specifically denotes a production that is produced for a home video format rather than a more traditional broadcast format. One of the benefits of this is that there is no need to restrict the production to any specific duration or length, either in terms of individual episodes or episodes over any particular "season". This is why an OVA can be anything from a short one shot. something that does restrict itself to a standard length, a short or full length feature or just about anything in between, in any mix that works for the production.
    You can think of it as the precursor to what you see happening now with original productions for streaming media content.

    The manga actually didn't stop in 95, it just changed names to "Alita: Last Order" because it switched publishers. The story has just gotten crazier and more awesome over the years, and is now being released under the name of Alita: Mars Chronicle.
    Battle Angel is crazed transhuman mad max adventures in and around the Scrapyard.
    In Last Order we go into orbit and deal with a whole solar system of totally different insane future societies (I like the one secretly run by an african flash gordon hero whose morals have been corrupted) by having an amazing cyborg kung fu tournament.
    And so far Mars Chronicle is mostly flashbacks to crazy Edgar Allen Poe shenanigans on a war torn Mars so that's cool.

    The writer specifically made the manga not take place in Japan, it took place in Kansas I think. He did that because he didn't want it to only appeal to Japanese people. That's why the theme of the manga seemed like it wasn't too "Japanesey." And the question about whether this was based on the manga or OVA, it's a mix of the two. Dr. Ido's hammer is pulled directly from the anime/manga. If you want to help it get a sequel, buy the blu rays and promote it as much as you could.

    The original story by Yukito Kishiro should not really be filmed by Japanese people because it's not intended to be a Japanese story; it was originally set in what is now Missouri, very few of the characters were Japanese and they're meant to speak English, so there's no disconnect in that aspect. Sure enough the movie changed its setting to Panama City, but it made the accusation of "white-washing" against the movie by its detractors totally absurd.
    In his RUclips channel, Shadiversity examined the practicality of Dr Ido's rocket hammer and concluded that it's quite plausible as an effective weapon.
    At the start of the film we were given a brief glimpse of Zalem, but we are not meant to know much about it, no more than the denizens of Iron City; it's a beautiful, high-class place for beautiful, high-class people. Ido and Chiren lived there as cybernetic surgeons, but having given birth to a disabled child they were not considered beautiful anymore, so they got evicted. Chiren was obsessed with the idea of going back, but Ido turned his back against it and said nothing about what's up there, for he ceased to consider it as a place worth his troubles.

    The manga is still ongoing. Its divided into 3 parts. Battle Angel Alita, Battle Angel Alita Last Order, and the final and thrid series Battle Angel Alita Mars chronicles is currently running. This movie was super accurate to the manga, sure some details were omitted and and they changed some things, but this overall is very accurate. Cameron is a huge fan of the manga, he wants to adapt the whole series.

      I think it's been the most impressive adaptation of source materials I've seen since the Lord of the Rings movies. You could tell the screenwriters had a deep understanding of the characters and story. Things that were condensed or changed, which is necessary for a time-limited movie format, were always loyal to the spirit of the source materials.

    Don't underestimate how much of the acting came from Rosa. She was absolutely spectacular and the anchor of the entire movie. I think this movie sets new standards for CG and WETA are tech wizards that deserve all the praise they get, but Rosa was also absolutely vital for making this movie work. The casting of Rosa was as vital for this movie as Gal Gadot was for Wonder Woman. I don't believe anyone could have played Alita better than Rosa did.

    The manga was published in a monthly magazine and has two sequel series, one of which is currently running and is the finale of the franchise.

    That acrobatic handstand at 17:34 is actually motion capture, a real woman does that exact stunt in real life.

    That death scen by Ali is one of the best preformances of all time imo.
    He actually *looks* like dying but he *sounds* like it's a trivial matter, a minor setback. Just like if he was some evil mastermind pulling the strings.
    Absolutly perfect acting, Bloody brilliant.

    I believe Cameron said a friend of his showed him the Manga, Cameron obtaining the T.V. and movie rights to it from Kishiro in the 90's that's why there was only the 2 part OVA ever made. Fun fact one or both of the bike scenes Rodriguez was reading the lines for Alita to Keean through an ear piece so it was Keean acting to Rodriguez's voice instead of Rosa's.
