I once played this game. True story; I got a helmet from their cash shop, right? I equipped said helmet and continue to play as normal like nothing happened. Back when I first played this game it was actually... educational? At the very least it didn't throw you on Toothless and give you some stupid tutorial flight and hand you an adult fucking dragon from the get go. You used to actually have to train your Dragon up, explore the area and do challenges to experience the different mechanics as you needed them. As you progressed your dragon would grow from a Baby that could only fly itself, to a Teenager that you could glide on, and then to an Adult that could fly you anywhere. The feeling of getting your first dragon to that stage and being able to freely fly around the School of Dragons is something I can not commit to words. I miss the old days so much and I really wish I still had my first account.

Worst part is, now that the movie and series is over they've kinda run out of ideas on what to add on. before new locations and dragons in the series or movies would be so beneficial to the devs as it could just implement those to the game but now thats over the have to make up shit like "hybrid dragons" to keep people engaged. im curious to see how long they last until they run out of ideas to keep it alive

I would say that Rise of Berk, Wild Skies, and HTTYD 1 on the wii/xbox are the best games. Luckily there is a fan game in development called Dragons of the Edge and you get to play as a dragon. I'm excited for it to have more dragons added but unfortunately there is only one dude working on the whole project.

    • @sole7023
      @sole7023 3 года назад +15

There’s still several paths they can do to keep making new dragons. I’m sure they’ll continue to make more hybrids, but they could also steal dragons from the original book series, or use existing parts of current dragons to make original ones like the sand wraith/ woolly howl (ripped off toothless). I wouldn’t say it’s too far a stretch either for them to try and use the dragons from Rescue Riders eventually.
But this is all assuming they continue to update the game for much longer. Personally I feel the game doesn’t have much more longevity as the How to Train your Dragon series fades into obscurity.

    • @emmecalvert6691
      @emmecalvert6691 3 года назад +23

@@sole7023 I've read the books and there are quite a few dragons they could definitely take inspiration from or implement them into the game. That'd be pretty cool actually. Also I have hardly seen any dragons from the Rescue Riders but I remember them looking all the same from a couple clips I saw. Therefore I am going off of a whim that I think that the show in general is kinda cringe and an insult to the HTTYD community. But since this game is for kids they probably will like it. Maybe it will make SoD interesting but it also will break the entire universe that SoD is based around. I don't see the game staying around for much longer.

XD This is coming from beating Omega in 15....it was fair , he was hard and you got something somewhat good for beating him. But dodging those damned 200 bolts and not failing is a reason that almost every FFX player now has carpal tunnel. That combined with the chocobo racing ( 0.02 seconds and cries in frustration at hours lost , made me just move on. FF13 had a better way to get the ultimate weapons and i LOVED it. it was hard but you were rewarded for both beating the harder monsters and getting the materials , allowing you to get a shit ton of chrystarium points WHILE getting the materials needed to upgrade. So it didn't really seem like a chore...more of killing 2 birds with one stone. Unlike FFX where you were greeted with teeth numbing bouts of frustration at the inability to dodge a bird or Zeus chucking his bolts.

Oh man, watching this video was a trip. (Enjoyable series, by the way!) Just seeing how DIFFERENT the opening hours of the game were for you in comparison to when I played seven years ago was just staggering. As it is now, your rating is absolutely correct, a shallow cashgrab trying to bite your wallet at every turn. It's a shame, really.
It wasn't really 'good' as an MMO...ever, but when it first released the educational angle and bonding with your dragon friend was a big deal. When you started you were just at the school, there to get your new dragon friend and learn together. Hiccup (movie one version) gave you a lift, and you got to use Toothless for a bit, but that was very very temporary. You got your own little dragon, named them and THAT'S IT. That is your One Dragon Buddy For life, now lets go learn some science facts and do some experiments with cute little animations with your dragon helping heat things for reactions and whatnot. Playing minigames for XP, using the farm for alternate ways of food and doing quests helped you get that little guy to a proper adult so you could finally fly freely instead of just right off the bat be able to go anywhere.
Back then, you could only really buy outfits to play viking dressup, or fancy saddles for your dragon/warpaints. The 'perks' for being a member were only getting to use the rental dragons in the flying minigame or if you made a new viking on the same account, you could pick from the limited Thunderdrum and Whispering Death. (so if you had one other players could angrily shoot at you for flaunting your ability to spend money on the game! because your Special Friend was 'rarer' than theirs. People would complain about it in chat and the forum, it was hilarious.)
But then the educational sorts of quests started to dry up. They made a mobile port which disabled a lot of keys for some goddawful reason. Clearly this whole angle wasn't profitable enough with more movies on the way. Toothless became a membership bonus dragon, and then the big update happened. You could now have multiple dragons! your additional Vikings are now basically pointless! after all, one toon can hold all the dragons you need if you fork out the dough.
I still enjoyed it well enough, I could still raise my new dragons to flight capability and enjoy it (as i'm an easily entertained simpleton. dragon go fly with soundtrack music, me happy)...but then they started cutting away all ways of making EXP while introdcing more and more stuff gated by paywalls, buffs and boosts for the pvp games and then making 'Titan' dragons which have such absurd exp requirements that it became tedium incarnate. I stopped playing when raising dragons became a chore instead of a fun past-time. The fact the sound mixing seems even WORSE than it used to be is just...yikes.
I put a decent bit of money in the game as a member, so I didn't realize it showed non members quests THEY CAN'T DO. That's just terrible. x-x. Thanks for the video!

Man this game used to be so nice. They really made you bond with your one little dragon buddy back then and you had to raise him/her first. I remember it being really cool when I finally got to fly when she grew up. Also they must have f-ed the controls with the mobile port because I remember flying actually being quite nice.
They even had a semi-easteregg credit island with a nice sunset where I made a screenshot of me and my dragon and used it as a profile pic for years. Good times :')

All i can say is it is such a waste. They were able to put in that many mechanics in just a small file size. If they're gonna be greedy with microtransactions, at least make a compelling gameplay and story line. They already have a foundation. They were able to put interesting things such as turn based combat and jumping puzzles but they made it too easy just to cater to children. Missed opportunity to put player housing. There is so much potential if they aren't just blinded by their greed.

    • @lucyandecember2843

to be fair there is actually a cohesive storyline, althoug behind a pay wall and its pretty engaging. That is if you paly it in order, something he didn't do, but which i also cannot blame him for as theres no place in the game where it gives you an order to the quests, you gotta search it up on google.
Beyond the expansions the free quests can be pretty fun, if you complete them rather than take on a bunch and not finish any of them. Which i can also understand, as the game is pretty confusing.
There is also housing in the game, not that compelling as you can only decorate it, and decorations can be pretty expensive, but housing nonetheless.

No offence, but you definitely _should_ be mad, and players like you are often the reason why terrible gaming studios and companies are doing so well nowadays despite making terrible choices. Because if you aren't mad, and you just allow them to take advantage of you solely because you like the concept of the game and feel it's special to you, then they will do just that, take advantage of your love for it. And they did.
Gamers really deserve better treatment, and players who say "I don't care! I love it anyway!" and continue to support them are allowing them and enabling them further. Game studios nowadays really need to see they *can't* treat the people who are giving them money badly and poorly. You wouldn't keep going to the same restaurant if it gave you food poisoning every time, just because you like the theme of the restaurant/food, would you?

This entire video was laughingly accurate but...ahh...I really wish there was a way for him to see what the game was. What it used to be. It used to be fantastic, the light of my childhood, what I played when I was down, and I had such a strong bond with my dragon - entire stories, in fact - and now it's just...gone. Along with any form of greatness and fantastic-ness this game once had.
Edit: Of course I'm going to have childhood goggles on. Of course it was probably worse than I remember. But it made up a lot of my early life, taught me things I would've otherwise gone a while without knowing, and created a lot of positive memories with a person I now have lost. I will still go on and fly around once in a while - that's what I practically always did. I enjoyed the game for the silly story, the dragons (which, by the way, I had nothing to compare it to), and the stories I made with it myself. It was never perfect, but you know what? Nothing is. It's gotten worse and worse, to the point where - even if it was a cash grab originally - it is undeniably and unignorably so now. It was - in my opinion - good when it started. I was one of the people who played practically from the start (I was a month or two late) and found the game extremely enjoyable - it cheered me up. I had fun. And what it was still imprints my life today - and, in fact, I learned some pretty fun stuff from it that school never taught me.
(Yes, I learned more from a dragon game than school, but shhh.)
It also was repetitive at times and once you finished all the quests there wasn't as much to do (which I did after a couple of years) but I improvised, and made stories, and enjoyed it nonetheless. I picked up skills and ideas from this game I never would've had otherwise. So, yes, I see it as good at that point (although the chat moderation was a bit too slack, now it's way too strict, but whatever). And if I had the chance, I'd bring it back to where it was.
That's my ramble over, sorry if I ranted and repeated myself. Please don't argue in the replies ^^

The game was not originally developed as a mobile game. It was developed as a browser game. The jump buttons and many others weren't added until much later as a result of the game going onto mobile. For some reason, they kept those buttons.. on the PC version.
The game was never well-developed and always had a multitude of bugs, broken features, clumsy mechanics, and a huge cheating & hacking issue. The graphics didn't age well either, and I doubt the engine itself was made to create a game of this scale. I played this game when I was younger and a worse company to develop this game couldn't have been chosen. Jump Start DOES NOT KNOW how to deal with games of this scale. They do NOT CARE as long as they are making money.

Its a good game if its not pay to play. Ive played this for 2 years and heres what i got(note im not a pro):
Expansion packs are everywhere and there are a lot of them. 2 expansion packs are available without paying real money but then nothing else. U get dragons for each expansion pack though(sometimes 2) but its 1000- 1275(i think) gems per expansion pack.
Collecting dragons and caring for them is hard. When it was the first time i was playing getting money is hard and i was broke(u cant do stable quests with a high success rate because u have 2 dragons and big money usually comes from these quests) u get a boulder stable (4 spaces) ( 3000 gold and its hard grinding it)and then the rest u pay with gems. Collecting the dragons are hard too. U only get groncicle (ice gronckle) and an armorwing fron the expansion packs u buy with coins, a whispering death from a quest (level 40) and the rest u either grind coins( u can get the rest of the starter dragons but the eggs cost 3000 or higher) or using gems. Most of the islands in sod are locked because of the expasion packs. U try to go to another with a lock sign and its stops u and says "Buy the expansion pack to unlock".
There are titan dragons to unlock by getting 50 titan runes and u get these by stable quests. These quest are incredibly hard and long(or have a small transaction of 500 gems). There are battle events but in reality its just shooting boats until the hp bar is down. There bronze silver and gold rewards by a mystery chest. Since there are other people competing gold is not easy. Gold rewards are farmer decor, buildings(like sheep pens and turtle ponds) gems(usually 20-200 gems) and dragon eggs. So heres the result from me.
      4-10 stars.
      -too much paywalls
      -not a lot of content
-for free2play players its usually the first 2 expansion packs and then they leave

@@micok5534 I can. Pyro is talking about things in the upcoming beta of Sky COTL. Sky holds quarterly events called "seasons", they vary in content, story and such but what you need to know is that you can buy cosmetics and such or you can get them for free. TGC (the company who were behing Journey and this game) makes most cosmetics free but puts some behind a paywall, so you pay once and get the opportunity to earn both free and paid cosmetics. They don't actually DO anything (the game is quite simple) and you don't have to pay to complete the event, but they are a nice added bonus. The most recent season TGC is planning, from what I heard from beta, has very expensive cosmetics where hardly any are given to f2p players. In addition to this, after you pay once to unlock the paid cosmetics, you then have to buy them yourself - a pay wall behind a paywall. It used to cost just $10 for one player to get access to every cosmetic, but now the estimate is around $100 to complete a season. That's WAY more than it's worth even if you split the cost with friends (which wasn't more than $30 to share with two other people). People are angry, people are complaining and they have the right to feel frustrated with the blatant inflation - BUT TGC never pulled a stunt like this before, otherwise they have treated their playerbase well and not made things too expensive overall even when raising money for charities. I'm sure other people will disagree and they're free to, but my point is that it shouldn't be the end of the world and the backlash should make the devs realise what a ridiculous idea this was. Portraying them as evil money grubbing villains won't help. It paints them in a bad light but I do not believe it's unforgivable if they make amends.
TLDR: game costs some money for optional stuff, devs planned to make optional stuff cost far more than it should, still in beta so there's time to rectify this but not great overall. that's all the tea I got 👌

I was 13 when this game first launched. As a huge HTRYD fan I was extremely excited to play it. It realessed as what was clearly intended as a beta (but not stated.) The game it is today is vastly different than was it was at launch. I absolutely loved this game as a kid and even had a membership to it. But by the second year of its release, they had completely ruined then game when non sense stuff. It originally had storyline and recurring original characters. The game developers never fixed any glitches so they just pilled up until the game was so laggy it was unplayable. By then I had mostly stopped playing it. After a couple months they released the mobile version. From watching this video it’s clear to me that they strapped the original game and converted the mobile version by into a computer version. The interface used to me completely different, as well as key bindings.
It’s honestly really sad to see how such a promising start of a game turned into this monstrosity.

I don't remember much about my time in this game, but i do have a handful of memories! The opening used to be different, Grimmel wasn't a thing. I think it was just generic dragon hunters that I rescued my Rumblehorn from. My hatchery dragon was a Gronckle. And, there actually is a way to tell if a quest will get paywalled, it's just stupidly inconspicuous: All quests with paywalls have icons containing exclamation points in them. I remember that before I realized this, I started the Deathsong quest, and since I had no way to cancel it, the village was just left covered in globs of amber for the entire rest of the time I played the game. I also think I started getting my Gronckle to Titan Wing with slowly-earned gems or I at least was saving up to do it. I also got an egg for a dragon I can't remember the name of via a promo code. Once, I tried getting my mom to play the game with me, and the game suspended me from saying anything in chat for some amount of time that I forgot because, as a test message to show her how the game's chat systems worked, I messaged her something along the lines of "I had cheese for lunch." To this day I have no clue why it did that to me for such an innocuous statement. I eventually ran out of non-member quests, so the endless clambering around the map I tended to do in any and all 3D games became my entire gameplay experience. I didn't really have much of a sense for quality during the years I played it a lot, but I do remember 10-year-old me finally having amassed enough braincells to realize how shoehorned in the Hidden World felt when they introduced it post-HTTYD3 release. Funnily enough, I remember the graphics looking a lot better - it must just be nostalgia blindness lmao
