Bad Seasons: Ward Burton 2002

- Definitely one of the weirdest bad seasons ever. 2 wins but ends up finishing 25th in points. Bet he wished he could have shot something through the window.

"I wish I had something I could *SHOT* through the window" is a quote that will honestly *NEVER* age 😂
You got that right
That look on top of it man... cracks me up.
His interview on the Dale Jr Downloaded was a treat
JIMMAY
Ward is the only person on earth that could have thrown his gloves at jr and the fans go nuts and love it hahaha
The only thing that’s more horrible than Ward Burton’s 2002 is how horribly underrated that Caterpillar scheme is.
Imagine how the scheme feels seeing this…
Bill Davis FTW!!
All of the Caterpillar Schemes on the #22 Car. Especially the Unsupported Chargers
absolutely
The Bristol night race scheme was straight fire
That's straight up wild to have multiple wins, multiple DNF's, several top 5's and top 10's and then have a 24th place average finish. That season was the definition of a mixed bag
I think that a lot of people tend to forget that a) the 02 Cup Series season was just as nail-biting as many others that have come since but never gets the credit it deserves and b) if you messed with Ward, he could be just as in-your-face as a lot of hot-tempered drivers can be, he just chose to express his feelings in a way that stood out among others (henceforth, the LEGENDARY "I wish I had something I could have shot through the window" quote that still cracks me up every time I hear it 😂😂😂😂)
Side note: that 22 Caterpillar Dodge scheme low key, is just as iconic as the 9 Evernham Dodge, in my opinion......
Your right
Hot take: More iconic even
Love Ward Burton. Got his autograph at a furniture store when we were kids . Always wished he could have experienced the same success that Jeff Burton did
me to
Ward in 2002 was like Michael Waltrip's 2003 season or Jimmy Spencer in 1994
Winning multiples races but had very much struggles in the same season
Jeff Gordon's 2005 Season Takes the cake for Trash Seasons with multiple victories
What about Mark Martin's 1993 Busch Series season? 14 starts, 7 wins, 7 DNFs.
If Ward was on a top team like his brother...
@@NASCARFAN93100 emblematic case
Like Smoke's 2006 season
@@crystaljon That was a very weird season honestly... And (maybe) what about Rowdy in 2009?
As a 5 year old who was obsessed with construction, I stumbled across the 2002 Daytona 500 on TV and spotted Ward Burton’s CAT car. Getting the win solidified my NASCAR fandom. I pretty much only remember the win and Ward’s incident with Dale Jr, but he’ll always be my first favorite driver.
Bad Seasons: Kyle Busch 2022
Bad Seasons: Brad Keselowski 2022
Bad Seasons: Ricky Stenhouse Jr 2022

Offseason content!!!!
Random Drivers: Tim George Jr
Wait ricky was worse then usual?
@@slowturtle11fan Based on his Average Finish (2021: 19.7 > 2022: 22.9) and the fact that he has more DNFs this year than last year I would say so
@JGR4LIFE My dad (Harvick fan) NEVER wants to be reminded of 2009
Ward Burton Was Boomhauer Of NASCAR Funny And Hilarious Thanks For Uploading
Another weird bad season I feel is Geoff Bodine in 1994. 3 wins (not counting his win at the All Star Race), 7 top 5's, 10 top 10's, an average finish of 21.3, 15 DNF's and a dismal 17th on the points
You know looking back the 2002 Winston Cup season was really underrated.
Yep remember there was a moment in 2002 where there was no tire wear at Pocono I think which was a headline going into the next race throughout the season and the championship battle was pretty good.
Most def
I mean there were so many drivers competing for the title and a bunch of story lines so yeah it was a pretty good season to say the least
Ward Burton's 2002 season was a very strange trip and a lot of unscheduled meetings with the wall...
He was the first cup winner I saw in person at Loudon 2002!
Ward Burton’s 2002 is a lot like Jeremy Mayfield’s 2000. He was either in victory lane or taking an exit. Rusty Wallace went winless in 2002 & scored 1,212 more points than Ward Burton.
I have like 5 diecasts of Ward Burton from when I was a kid. My parents were big fans, and I thought the Cat car just so cool
I loved to hear him talk👍
Might be the best worst seasons video
Can’t believe he won twice
“OH, HE CAN’T DO THAT!”
- Benny Parsons speaking on Sterling Marlin, 2002 Daytona 500
Wow, the 22 team mangled a lot of cars that year. Amazing they had two wins too. Ward was a solid driver and 5 career wins is nothing to be ashamed of.
My favorite driver growing up. Always nice to see a video about ol Ward
Very interesting one here even know he won the Daytona 500 and won at New Hampshire and he could've won the Spring Richmond and the Fall Martinsville. But I understand why this is a bad season overall for Ward Burton.
FOX should hire Ward as their new NASCAR color commentator.
I'd like that
I was recently gifted a vintage Bill Davis Racing CAT #22 Ward Burton jacket. Perfect for the fall vibes lately up here in the northeast.
I still don't think this was a bad season -- especially since my dad was a fan of his ever since 1994. Winning the Daytona 500 made our house a party atmosphere. Never heard my dad celebrate that loud for anything before or since. How well he did in the points that year didn't matter, winning the Daytona 500 gave him the respect that it didn't seem like he had beforehand. Especially since, back then, it wasn't things like "playoff appearances" or "final 4 runs" that mattered, but, if you weren't the champion, winning big races, a strong points finish, or winning a large number of races was how you gauged success.
Aside from Daytona, New Hampshire, and the Bristol night race 2002 was a year to forget for Ward.
1:49
Me, jumping up from my couch: HEY!! I WAS AT THIS RACE!!!! IT WAS MY FIRST LIVE EXPERIENCE!!! ME AND MY MOM STAYED ALL DAY SUNDAY IN PANCHOS IN THE POURING RAIN ON THE BLEECHERS AND CAME BACK THE NEXT DAY FOR THE RACE!! Best day a second grader could ever have on a school day lmao
The only thing that’s more horrible than 2002 for Ward Burton is horribly underrated that Caterpillar scheme is.
Ward was one of my favorite drivers. he was good, but often in the wrong place at the wrong time getting caught up in a wreck someone else caused. I also still have a CAT racing jacket of Ward's when Bill Davis team was driving Pontiacs.
As a big fan of Ward Burton I know that once he won the Daytona 500 he started preparations for his Wildlife refuge so his mind might not of been heavily in this season. He was a pretty consistent driver most seasons but this season was bad. If he had the 2 wins and been racing like he did in 1998 or 99 he probably could have had a shot at the championship.
Ward is one of those drivers I wonder how he would have done if he didn't have so much loyalty to Bill Davis. From what I've read, he had offers from Roush and a couple other better teams, and was even told by someone in the team to go, but he stayed for whatever reason
I talked with his son Jeb awhile back, Ward turned down some really good rides. Including offers from Hendricks and Roush. Stuff that never made headlines.. but yes, Ward chose loyalty over success
I always wondered how much better Ward would have been if he didn't drive for Bill Davis Racing. He carried a team that was mid pack at best even during that time.
Bad Commercials: Ward Burton Trying To Pronounce “Cat Skid Steer”
Best accent in racing history. 😊. And these guys were all fine compared to the new car.
I happened to be in Atlantic City the night before the 2002 Daytona 500 and was a big 22 fan. I asked the casino if there was somewhere I could put 100 dollars on WB to win but apparently they didn't have sports betting in AC back then. I wonder how much I would have won?
Always liked Ward. Dude was fun to listen to and always had a cool looking ride. Rough season for sure.
Winning the 500 makes it better and won at Loudon
2007 though was rough
Had a ton of horrible luck that season could’ve won Richmond and Martinsville
Weird Seasons (was fast but never got the results) should actually be a thing.
Can you do a Bad Season video on Dale Jarrett’s 2003 season
Ward did way more with less during his time at Bill Davis Racing. Shame his career petered out the way it did.
Most of these were unfortunate. Either bad Bill Davis Racing equipment, getting involved in wrecks, or just gets a type flat at the wrong time. If he was in, say, Roush Racing equipment, I could see him wining more than he did.
Ward Burton he was a good driver in Nascar and that's great he got 5 wins and it sucks he didn't get more wins in Nascar and I love this video Black Flags Matter
I love Ward but let's be honest here,he was very lucky to have won the Daytona 500 that year thanks to Sterling Marlin spinning out Jeff Gordon under the caution with a few laps to go. Had that nonsense not taken place JG would be a 4x Daytona 500 champion cause he went on to win his eventual 3rd in 2005.
The 2002 Daytona 500 was redemption for the 01 500 in many ways. Ward won and everyone went home after the race. 01 was a great 500 until the last lap.
Ward Burton's 2002 Season, Michael Waltrip's 2003 Season, Jeff Gordon's 2005 Season and Tony Stewart's 2006 Season has to be the worst/best seasons out there
I'd add Kyle Busch 2009 & Matt Kenseth 2009 to that conversation as well
@@NASCARFAN93100 Dale Earnhardt 1982
Jermey Mayfield 2000
How could this be a bad season for Ward Burton in 2002. Winning the 500 and New Hampshire that year. 2003 and 2004 were the Bad seasons for Ward Burton along with 2007.
The dude shows up, wins a Daytona 500, a Southern 500, then goes back into the woods
Bill Davis should have stuck with Ward, the next few years showed the driver wasn't the problem with the 22 team
Ward was either really good or really bad. With bad luck.. if he doesn’t have that horrible luck, he could have won at least 3 more races.
Alternate title:
Daytona 500 Hangovers: Ward Burton 2002
I can't believe it's been 20 years already since Ward Burton won the Daytona 500
Imagine if Bill Davis Racing hadn’t dropped the ball on Dodge with the Toyota deal in 2004. Probably could’ve done some good with Scott Wimmer in 04-05 and potentially with Dave Blaney in 06-07.
Ward Burton probably never leaves the team, Scott Wimmer probably drives the 23 car, who knows what Blaney does...maybe that saves the team from eventually quitting NASCAR altogether in 2009.
the 2002 season was a bust for Ward Burton because he didn’t catch and tame the number of snakes he wanted
20 years later we are asking what could have been a championship team and driver.
Winning the Daytona 500 is still probably the best bad season you could have.
Darian, do Jimmy Spencer‘s 1994 season😎
That Darlington big one is a wreck I feel isn’t talked about much, even though Tony Stewart got injured and lots of hard hits and took lots of good cars out
Ironically this season 2002 Ward won the last 2 cup races of his entire career including the Daytona 500
Good seasons: Jeff Burton 1999-2000
Now THIS was NASCAR. It's astonishing just how slapass the modern Cup Series is by comparison.
Huh, the timing on this is weird since I just met Ward a few days ago.
Wow. Had no idea he was so potentially dominant. So unlucky
Good seasons: Alex Bowman 2021
Bad seasons- Scott wimmer in the 22 car.
Bad season- Elliott Sadler- his years in the 21 with the wood brothers.
BFM already did a Scott Wimmer video

Good Seasons: Ward Burton 1999
And 2000 and 2001
DW when he was actually good and not a pretend hyped up attention hound version the last decade he was on FOX. Man, I loved Ward so much this was a hard season to tough out. As a Terry Labonte fan, his 2000-2002 was nothing to write home about either.
Beginning of the season: "SON OF A BITCH!!! WE WON IT MAN!!!"
End of the season: "11 Car got into me, cut the left front down. We run like shit all day anyway."
And, my favorite Ward soundbite: CAT Skid Steer duhdubuhduh loader... and Go se that fuckin guy over there
I have a idea Bad seasons Jimmy Spencer 1994 while getting his only 2 wins that season it was awful only getting 2 wins 3 top 5’s and 4 top 10’s and a 29th place points finish
Can we get Dale Jarrett 2003?
I'd guess if you asked Ward he wouldn't call it a bad season because he won the Daytona 500.
I did not know how bad his season was until now
It’s like if you win the Daytona 500 you have a terrible season
Have you done Bad seasons: Kevin Harvick 2021?
The Catapillar Curse !!!
I always liked the 22 CAT car it's too bad it had so many issues
random drivers/nascar busts: joe graf, jr.
Hard to completely agree. Maybe this win and your in crap has desensitized me to a bigger year round picture, BUT..A driver with only 5 wins nabbing 2 in one year automatically makes it his best despite the rest.
never seen nobody mad at dale Jr until now😂
a first rate driver driving for a 2nd rate team. he could have won many more races with a good team.
Bad seasons: Ty Dillon 2022
Hey Black Flags Matter ? Do you think Kyle Busch's 2009 season is worthy of a bad seasons episode ?
Bad seasons- Kyle petty in the 45 car. Dnq
And
Not much to jump up and down for
Bad seasons: Kasey Kahne 2007
This guy always looked miserable. Ward Burton. His brother Jeff was the complete opposite of this guy
Marty Robbins
Ryan Newman 2021
*KamikazeGames wants to know your location*
He mainly sucked due to other cars wrecking him or car failures.
In my opinion the 2002 Daytona 500 is the most forgetful Daytona 500 ever
Explain
2003 and 2009 were the worst
2000 is calling and wanting its award back.
Top 5 crappiest 500s (in no particular order): 2000, 2013, 2009, 2016 and 2003 with dishonorable mention to 2021
2002 had some memorable moments. The first Daytona 500 after Dale Sr’s passing, Jimmie Johnson starting on the pole in his first full time season, Tony Stewart’s engine failing on lap 3 (the silent lap), Dale Jr’s multiple incidents (shredded tire, near comeback, brake failure, then caught in the Big One), Dave Marcis final race, and never forget Sterling Marlin’s red flag blunder. Capped off from BP’s famous call “Oh! He can’t do that!”
I would consider 2001 a bad season for Ward Burton who finished 14th in the points with one win in the Mountain Dew Southern 500 which came nine days before the terrorist attack struck New York City.
