Ricky fully deserved that payback. If you're going to race dirty and intentionally wreck someone to knock them out of the championship, then you should fully expect to be put in the wall. At that point, Scott had nothing else to lose.
To this day, I can't understand why Ricky was so aggressive with Scott, and in the opening laps. Absolutely blatant disrespect towards the man he's fighting against for the championship, and out of the blue. I'd have a hard time looking at myself in the mirror if I'd done that. I don't recall if he was interviewed that day, but Ricky had no right to be surprised by Scott's payback. I applauded that move.
What was that quote from Emplemon? "The problem with taking from someone when you have nothing to gain is that they may end up in a position with nothing to lose." No reason for Ricky to spin Speed that early in the race, and Speed ended up with literally nothing to lose.
Speed probably could have shown some brains by letting an impatient driver by early even if that driver was also in the championship hunt, but yeah, on the early laps, there was no need for that. Hell, even in the last laps, bumrushing the guy like that was off base, and even I’m someone that can understand bump and runs late in the race.
Seeing the 99 car on track looking like Carl Edwards just gives me crazy nostalgia. I mean if you told me that was Carl Edwards, I would believe you. Crazy that Stenhouse drove in that class of racing royalty.
How Ricky Stenhouse Jr. had a career after this is beyond me. One of the most blatantly dirty, championship-manipulating moves in stock car history. He should have been banned from ever setting foot on an ARCA or NASCAR track ever again. The fact Roush kept supporting him and moving him up to higher made me lose all respect for Jack Roush and his team in general. The huge amounts of disappointment Roush Racing has had in the past decade+ makes me happy simply because of this incident. They deserve the misery. After hearing, years later, of the hell Mark Martin went through with Roush Racing, the penny-pinching, underhanded ways that team was run, it all falls into place.
I agree. I would also apply your comment to a couple more low life's...Ty Gibbs punting his teammate for Xfinity championship and worse of all, Kryle "Pouty" Busch purposely wrecking Ron Hornaday out of a Truck Series championship...in a race Pouty didn't need to be in, certainly if he is going to change the outcome of a championship by dumping a guy at high speed UNDER CAUTION. Those 3 incidents was absolutely rotten and told us a lot about their character...or lack thereof.
I was in the infield during this race my wife worked at the Hampton Inn where a lot of the drivers stayed, if u pause it u can see us standing in the infield!
Scott Speed came from F1, where it's totally unacceptable to intentional wreck an opponent. And if you do so, you don't fight for a championship, but for the right to return two years later. That's probably, what he meant with "it's just ARCA": He had lost all respect he may have had for the sanctioning body of that series. He also never raced any ARCA race after this.
2021 Arca West was pretty crazy as well. Absurdly close points battle and one guy lost the championship because his teammate thought the race was over and slowed down, allowing his rival to gain another spot.
Scott Speed had this championship taken from him and a few weeks later he took away the Truck championship away from Ron Hornaday. At least he didn't wreck Hornaday to do it.
It was Kryle "Pouty" Busch who purposely wrecked Ron Hornaday out of a Truck Series championship...at high speed under CAUTION ! The common denominator...both are low class , narcissistic assholes.
People wonder why Stenhouse is disliked, this is a large part of the picture. It destroyed Speed's image too. I remember all the debate after this race. The racing media was ready to throw Speed under the bus which was shocking. Gotta love that old HOF Racing scheme winning a title
I actually remember watching the final race of the 2008 ARCA series on TV. It was a good race, but it didn't really catch my interest at the time. Nowadays, I mostly think it's just kinda funny looking back on all the drivers that went on to the Cup Series during a time where they were all so young.
But why? The Speed era seemed like an awesome era to watch whatever is on the Speed channel. F1, American Le Mans Series the Truck Series, World of Outlaws and ARCA. So many series on one network.
It's interesting reading the comments here. When this happened, I sided with Scott Speed and I was vilified for it. Everyone I knew on all the Forums though Stenhouse did nothing wrong, or at the very least, Speed had no reason to do what he did. My views then are the same they are now, I'm amazed that ARCA couldn't see what Stenhouse was doing and at the very LEAST tell him to cool it. If it had been NASCAR(lord help me) they would've told him to knock it off. I've also heard a rumor a couple years later that his team told him to do it.
THANK YOU!!! I was so mind blown when all the motorsports media was throwing Scott Speed under the bus while completely being sympathetic to Ricky. He created his mess and people were shocked a super aggressive guy like Speed didn't tolerate it. I also hear it had to do with Scott coming off like a prima donna the whole year but it was still no excuse for a guy blatantly trying to ruin your day to make up points.
This was to say the least 90 percent Stenhouse's fault... I agree with u. If u drive someone dirty u get it back. Scott really didn't do anything wrong or anything I wouldn't have done
I was at this race!!! Would have been 15 years old and was sitting with my dad in first couple rows of the stands just before turn 1. Speed took out Stenhouse right in front of us. Crazy thing to witness! Thank you for making this! Great job. :D
Stenhouse is a real TALENTLESS HACK, this pisses me off that Stenhouse tried to win a championship so dirty and took out the guy who actually deserved to win.
A crazy finish to a championship that no one ever talks about is the 2011 K&N Pro Series East finale. All Brett Moffitt had to do was coast to the finish, but he tried a late block on a hard charging Tyler Reddick, which put him into the wall. I believe he finished 3rd in points while Kyle Larson won the championship. I always wonder if things would’ve been any different for Moffitt if he had won that championship.
I saw that race on TV. I wanted Scott Speed to win the ARCA Championship that year, but it was really funny when he wrecked Ricky Stenhouse Jr. as revenge for earlier in the race. I was happy that Justin Allgier won the ARCA Championship that year.
@ black flags matter I want to start out by saying I love your channel and Great video but I wish you would have talked about the car count in this race plus how competitive this searies was at this time it was a big deal to be top 3 in points at the end of the year arca was more competitive thin the truck searies at this time they would only start 35 cars on the short tracks and sent home 6 cars home this day it would pay 5k to just start the race. Now arca 2022 has maybe 5 cars that run the whole season so if you wen the championship you were only competing against 4 drivers it's almost a attendance award you I hope they can rebuild the searies it was always fun to watch you never knew who was going to shoe up and run a arca car it could be bubba pollard, Stephen nasse , red farmer it doesn't matter.
Arca had some much crazier finales at Atlanta than this one back in the 90s imo. Crazy flips and heavy crashes. This was definitely the wildest points finish though for sure
I will always be a fan of Scott Speed because of this race. This wasn't payback. This wasn't revenge. It was justice. ARCA didn't police the situation, so Scott Speed took care of it himself. NASCAR put Matt Kenseth in the same position years later, much like Scott Speed, he delivered punishment NASCAR wouldn't.
Ricky fully deserved that payback. If you're going to race dirty and intentionally wreck someone to knock them out of the championship, then you should fully expect to be put in the wall. At that point, Scott had nothing else to lose.
I entertain myself following all the places that Scott Speed's career went. From junior open wheel, F1, ARCA, NASCAR, Formula E, and Rallycross
Scott Speed had talent. But he was rushed as hell. If he wasn’t rushed I’d say he could have won at least 1 cup race.
Maybe he’d be better in F1, too.
@@psychlops924 good to know. Glad he had success elsewhere than nascar!
with the last name "speed" I'd be rushed too 😂
