    My BBS02 came configured for 48v battery at 24 amps. Full throttle does 1152 watts. It is rated for 750 watts. It will do the 1152 watts, but it gets hot, really hot. You can fry an egg in it hot. So if you have a BBS02, get a communication USB cable and configure your controller in a way that wont burn you motor or controller.

When I ride my bbshd as hard as possible it only gets to around 45 Celcius on the outer case with a 54v fully charged to 61.5v I get around 1600w out of the bbshd with stock controller.

      Really?
      I have a BBSHD and I commute daily about 80Km (40Km one way).
      Even if i drive constantly with 600-800W (nearly 1600W while accelerating for a few seconds, then only holding the speed) the motor gets into thermal throttling after neary 1 hour.
      The heat inside the motor builds up very slowly, but it builds up.
      After one hour the heat is spread over the entire motor case and the controller tries to cool down.
      For a few moments I could only draw 500-600 Watts, then it ramps again up to max.
      So be careful, even the HD gets hot. Really slow, but it gets hot.

    i run my BBS02 at 48V 18A, it's plenty powerful that way and there no issue whatsoever. I do have to say that I replace the grease on all gears with a silicone grease to which I add ample amounts of WS2 nanopowder and 1.6micron PTFE powder as dry film lubricants. Also I put some silicone sealant everywhere water and dirt could potentially ingress. The BBS02 is much better suited for mountainbiking because of the thinner final gear reduction (perfect chainline on 36t chainring with some cassette adaptations) and the lower weight. People are complaining that the BBS02 is heavy compared to an frame integrated motor, but all the weight gains are compensated by the lightweigt nature of tubular bike frames (rather than heavy shells of integrated motor and battery ebikes..). The last build for a customer gave a bike weight of 19.7kg with a 650Wh battery. that's very lightweigt!

    • @kshred3043
      @kshred3043 3 года назад

      Good points on the application of the BBS02 to mountain biking.
      Do you know if it can be successfullyl adapted to a mountain bike that runs a 1x12 Shimano SLX/Deore chain set ? I am contemplating converting a Marin Rift Zone 27.5" (73 mm BSA bottom bracket and stock 32 tooth front sprocket). In particular, I thought that I read somewhere that the 1x12 uses a narrower than standard chain which, if true, could presumably present a compatibility with the BBS02 sprocket. But I know next to nothing about these things. Hence the question.

    • @JoLe1991
      @JoLe1991 3 года назад +4

      @@kshred3043 honestly I would not go for anything more than a 10 speed cassette. The reason is pretty simple: 11 and 12 speed cassettes are wider than 10 or 9 speed. that automatically means more torsion on the chain in extreme cogs which wears down the chain, chainring and cogs more rapidly. I chose a 9 speed wide range cassette (11-50t) (only available from aliexpress as far as I know), along with a long cage 9s derailleur, and omitted the 11t cog to move the rest of the cassette to the outside. you need some sort of washer to enable the cassette lockring to push onto the 13t cog. 9 speed stuff is way cheaper and way more robust than 10s and certainly 11s or 12s. totally happy with 8 cogs and big jumps between them.

      Was thinking to use an -02 for a spare/travel bike, due to the lighter weight.
      For regular use, will use the BBS-HD, as I’m needing to pull a trailer on a regular basis. Had one on the old bike - some wretch cut the chain last March while I was getting groceries…. They Got the bike *and* the trailer. Grrrr.

    • @JoLe1991
      @JoLe1991 3 года назад +1

      @@dennisyoung4631 the full power of the bbshd is reached beyond pedaling cadence, that's why I consider it more of a moped motor. it has a bigger rotor/stator and better cooling ability, do it can handle high power for longer than the bbs02. at 18A the bbs02 has no overheating issues, though. I pull trailers all the time, sometimes as heavy as 100kg even on uphills, not crazy uphills though. a weak point of the bbs02 is the not so hermetic plastic gear cover. I suspect it's responsible for a slow but steady loss of grease. Will be making a carbon fiber cover soon

      @@JoLe1991 I went from 9s to 11s and now 12s. Honestly the 9s (XTR cassette, SRAM X9 derailleur and gripshit) is the best drive train I ever rode, way lighter system weight than any 11s or 12s. There are 2 things I like about 9s. 1) You feel the gear change (and the changes in cadence feel right) 2) If you're a gripshift type of guy the 9 sp gripshit racks through all the gears really fast with one relatively short twist of the wrist. With 11 and 12 you have to twist your wrist almost under the bar to rack the whole cassette or take 2 bites at it. I hate that. I had to go up 11s then 12s because of illness - I really needed the gear range especially in low gears. I'm looking at building an e-bike. With the power assist I won't need the 12s gear range. So I'm going back to a 9s when I build.

    I always run a 30T-36T chain ring to keep the motor spinning faster.. that keeps the motor from lugging down which causes it to heat up.. Controller fail when they overheat.. they also consume less watts if they spin faster in a lower gear.. higher gear/slower spin eats up range..
    The biggest problem i found with the BBS02 750 is that the Reduction Gear tends to loose teeth.. and they require a mechanic to replace the Reduction Gear.. You have to have expensive proprietary tools to remove the shaft from the 750w motor and special knowledge.. Very difficult repair.
    The BBSHD on the other hand is easy to change the shaft assembly with the new reduction gear.. Simple DIY project..

    unlike the bbshd, the bbs02 actually has a humane pedaling cadence(90-110rpm vs 130-150rpm). the hd is really more of a moped motor and the 02 is really a more powerful ebike motor.

      I disagree. I have both and it's apples to oranges. Can't ride the 02 like the HD without frying controllers left and right. The HD also has longer fins to trap more air when you ride to cool it down.the 02's just get too hot and cannot handle it.

    • @JoLe1991
      @JoLe1991 3 года назад +2

      @@jasonkoz8985 sure the 02 is not made to be used at 25A. it can take 18A for quite a while though. The HD has more mass and more fins, and a bigger motor inside. I said the 02 is plenty robust enough for a reuglar ebike (like retail emtbs or s-pedelecs), the HD is beyond that category, I would say moped (as many 2 stroke motors have around 1.8hp). also my biggest worry of the entire drivetrain is not chain, not sprocket, but freehub mechanisms are thr weak link when exposed to such high torque (depends on motor torque and gear ratio between chainring and rear sprocket). the 02 is definitely able to shred up pawl freehubs, also the drive ring of dt ratchet gets beaten up...just to say thr hd is hitting even harder.

But then you must keep watch on the coil temperature and I mean physically the coil temp and not the shell since that says nothing, but it will be overheated anyway but you save the motor. I have put it at 75 degrees and it reach that in the summer in less than 30 seconds at 52V 20A, at winter and slightly above freezing about a minute. By not watching the temperature is a sure and very easy way to burn the coils in it.

    I have both and the HD all the way. The bbs02 controllers are pure garbage!! I've been through 4 now and I would never buy one again. It's going right in the trash on Thursday. Now my bbshd I've beaten it to death and it still operates like I pulled it out of the box this morning. I don't ride my bbs02 like the HD because it's a cruiser not a mountain bike and I've been easy on the throttle knowing they get red hot and fry controllers and yet still happened (last night actually) LMAO

      You can fit the HD controller to the 02 they run fine I did it and I've now dumped the stock controller for the BAC855 the difference is like night and day and I run 16s (67v) smooth and almost silent..

      They are great and tunable too with firmware but the lack of waterproofing is a problem. I figured a way around it, basically packing the gaps with heavy grease.

      The pedal-assist feel on my TSDZ2 is nice, but the motor itself is a little weedy. On one side, that means it's not going to get impounded, on the other side, it overheats pretty easily.

  • @thomasjurd172

    Not as good as HD and would have gone the bbshd with more reshearch period . If the controller blows for instance you can allways go external controller route by buying a grin phaserunner plug and play and if your batterys a good one you can set it with phone app up to 50 amps and increase perfomance . The bbso2 is a great little motor ! If you do the digital temp probe into controller and hit the throttle not on full throttle to long . If mine gets to 45c or more l lower the ppwer an lay of the throttle .
    Best an only mod u can do with the 750w 48v . And can last if tode apopietley .
